The City Wall of Diyarbakir - UNESCO [Diyarbakir / Turkey]
The Diyarbakir city walls have an ancient history dating back to the Romans. Today, the walls are largely intact, and form a ring around the old city that is over 5km (3miles) in circumference. The walls are over 10 meters (about 33 feet) high and are 3-5 meters (about 10-16 feet) thick.
The city and walls of Diyarbakir are on an impending list to be named a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

DIYARBAKIR, Turkey: The most amazing city and a lot of unwanted attention
Back in 2020 when the world was dealing with the pandemic, I was traveling through Southeast Turkey and Iraq. One of the last cities I visited in a 3-week trip was Diyarbakir - a lovely and lively city with a lot of history and charm.
I really enjoyed the vibe of the city, and together with a warm sunny day, it was one of the best travel days I had. I wandered around town, shared smiles with locals, and visited the park and the famous bridge. Along the way, a kind local started chatting with me and then accompanied me to the bridge. He was very kind and lovely but honestly, I didn`t look for any attention, I just wanted to walk around and discover on my own.
The entire situation got awkward and unpleasant, to say the least...

The Roman walls of Diyarbakır, Türkiye
One of the greatest, and best maintained set of ancient walls are in Diyarbakır. These walls were first built in 297AD by Romans and over the next 1500+ years the walls were expanded and fortified using volcanic rock from the surrounding region. I walk on the walls and then drive the entire ancient parameter with my guide Taha Ozyavuz.
