Parque Nacional Barra Honda Costa Rica

Barra Honda is home to a cave system that is made up of reef-like limestones. Ancient reefs that emerged due to over elevation that was caused by the tectonic faults. It developed 60 million years ago. This cave represents thousands of years of geological history, which has resulted in an extensive system of independent caverns with formations of stalactites and stalagmites. It has a network of calcareous cavers, which have been explored 50% by scientists and speleologists. At present, only the Velvet cavern is open to the public because it is safe for non-experienced visitors and is an ideal location for adventure tourism. You will hike through beautiful forests then when you get to the cave you will be put in safety equipment and begin the descent down a ladder into the cave. Then you will explore for about an hour, seeing formations that were made millions of years ago. People with conditions such as hypertension, vertigo, or claustrophobia are not recommended to descend to the caverns.

he area of the Tempisque Basin where the Nicoya Peninsula joins the mainland has a foundation of relatively soft limestone. Water has cut extensive caves through Cerro Barra Honda and the other small mountains creating the best know feature of this National Park. However, the park also has well maintained hiking trails. The protected tropical dry forest (though mostly secondary) within its borders is some of the last in the world, and very different from the rain and cloud forests that attract many ecological tourists to Costa Rica
he soda straws, pearls, roses, needles, cave grapes, curtains, terraces, stalactites, stalagmites and other calcareous formations of the more than 40 limestone caverns are the main attraction at Barra Honda National Park.
The caves are all in relatively good condition because their vertical entrances are difficult to negotiate. This is also why you need climbing gear, a guide, and permission from the Parks service in advance to enter them.
Ticos call them PapayasThe caves range from a few feet to over 780 feet (240 meters) deep. Pozo Hediondo (Fetid Pit) Cave was named for the aroma of the guano deposited by thousands of resident bats.
Until the caverns were discovered and explored in the late sixties, many believed that Cerro Barra Honda was a volcano because of the roaring sounds made by the bats as they departed the caverns en masse, and the fumes from the caves they occupied.

Cavernas de Barra Honda. The Barra Honda National Park in addition to offering several trails within the dry forest also features one of the most beautiful caves in the country. It is a cave located a few kilometers from Nicoya and 450 meters high, therefore in order to visit, one must descend several meters on a vertical ladder.
The cave system of Barra Honda combines ancient coral reefs that emerged from normal lifting of the tectonic plates and the stalactite and stalagmite formations. Although the cave system has not yet been fully explored one of which is open to the public velvet sector

I DO NOT OWN THE RIGHTS TO THE AUDIO (Bosques y Cuerdas, by Antonio Varela, Track #12). It is used for non-commercial purposes only.
This video covers ONLY the Administrative & Housing section of the Park, located in the low-land. All of the caves are located on top of the 4 hills that conform the Park.
Barra Honda National Park was created by Law 40 years ago, on the 22nd of March of 1974, as a result of the continuous work of the G. E. (Grupo Espeleológico of the Club de Montañeros de Costa Rica, from 1967 to 1974). The Park covers an area of 2295 Ha (5671 acres) and houses a multitude of limestone caves and one of the few patches of Tropical Dry Forest of this country.
