FREIGHT Trains from GOA : Indian Railways EMD heaven

Enjoy watching a variety of Freight Trains over the non electrified Double line section in Goa. Goa being the smallest state of India yet falls under two separate Railway Zones one being the South Western Railway (SWR) line that terminates at Vasco Da Gama and the other being the Konkan Railway (KR) which runs parallel to the SWR line for a short distance from Madgaon to Majorda and then deviates towards Verna and goes further upto Roha near Mumbai while the SWR line continues towards Cansaulim and goes further upto Vasco. A pure Diesel territory.

I was for a shock that I couldn't spot even a single Freight train powered by the chugging ALCo's every single train was hauled by a Electromotive Diesels (EMD) from Hubli, Gooty, Kazipet, Kalyan and Erode Diesel Sheds. A purely EMD dominated Zone.

Freight Traffic is pretty high due to the presence of Mormugao Port Trust located at Vasco where the Coal is unloaded from the vessels and further loaded on to Freight Trains for transporting Coal to various parts of India.Coal trains are seen all day long here , as seen in the video the loaded freight trains are covered with waterproof tarpaulin sheets to prevent water damage .

The KR line also sees a good number of freight trains how ever their main highlight is the Roll on – Roll off (RORO) Service offered for transporting Trucks over Rails. Presently KR is the only Zone offering such a Service in India . The service is available from Kolad (145 kms. from Mumbai), Verna (12 kms. from Madgaon) upto Surathkal (20 kms. from Mangalore) and vice-versa.

Benefits of RORO services : -

RORO services save precious fuel for the nation.
Speed of Ro-Ro train is fast enough as compared to movement by Road
Terminal time of loading/unloading is just 15 to 20 minutes in Ro-Ro.
Better turnaround of trucks.
No risk of accidents.
No wear and tear of trucks.
Less pollution as trucks are not plying on the roads.
No hassle of octroi, toll etc.

Location : Suravali , Goa. Suravali and Majorda are two intermediate stations betwenn Madgaon - Vasco (SWR) and Madgao - Verna (KR).

EMD Vs ALCo INDIAN RAILWAYS Freight Train beauty

P.S There are 2 separate Freight trains captured in this Video.
Enjoy the beautiful view of 2 Freight trains back to back conquering the lush green Makali Ghats located on the Bangalore - Mumbai Rail route about 60 KM away from Bangalore.

The first freight train is hauled by twin WDG-4 Electromotive Diesel Locomotives with a Horse Power of 4500 HP each.Enjoy the notching sounds of the EMD hauling a long rake of Cement carrying wagons as it gracefully curves into the ghats which is restricted to 50 KM/H Speed for freight trains.

The second freight train is hauled by the ever green Twin WDG-3A ALCo's with a horse power of 3100 HP each hauling a brown BCNA wagon. The chugging duos conquer the ghats with utmost grace.

So are you going with the EMD or ALCo ??

EMD Vs ALCo INDIAN RAILWAYS (Electro Motive Diesel versus ALCo's)

A close comparison of Indian Railways (EMD) Electro Motive Diesel Locomotive versus a Diesel ALCo.

Comparison between Golden Rock Ponmalai WDG4 with a Guntakal WDG3A ALCo.

A lot of effort & time was taken to shoot both the locos separately in the same angle and the wait time to get a Notching EMD & ALCo in LHF with similar lighting , location and angle was really challenging but finally accomplished.

Hope you enjoy watching the fusion sounds of a Notching EMD versus a Chugging and smoking ALCo !!

One of the best Roller Coaster rail roads I have ever witnessed. A sharp S-curve cum Roller Coaster located on the Bangalore - Mysore line Enjoy watching the Long Blue Pythons of 24 Coach each gracefully Roller Coasting over the sharp S-Curve Gradient. One hauled by a 4500 HP EMD and the other hauled by 3100x2 HP ALCo Twins.

Who did a better job ALCo or EMD ??

ALCo Vs EMD : Indian Railway Locomotives

Catch yet another ALCo versus EMD comparison between the
Twin WDG-3A 's (2 X 3300 HP) chugging ALCo's (American Locomotive Company ) versus a Single WDG-4 (4500 HP) EMD ( Electro-Motive Diesel ). Both the trains are of 24 Coaches each and captured exactly at the same location where the locomotives start to notch up belching out smoke moving at an average speed with in the station Block limit.

Interestingly both the trains were towed by the 'G- series' freight Locomotives WDG-3A / WDG-4 , which isn't their regular powers. So which one impressed you the most ?

ALCO vs EMD | Diesel Monsters of Indian Railways

ALCO vs EMD | Diesel Monsters of Indian Railways
Acceleration of ALCo and EMD locomotives with same load at a location approx. 3 kms from departure.

EMD's dominating ALCO's : Indian Railways ( Electromotive Diesels)

Electromotive Diesel (EMD) Locomotives showing dominance over ALCo's. This is a video compilation of maximum Trains hauled by the EMD (Diesel-Electric) fuel efficient Locomotives. This Technology is quickly replacing most of the ALCo hauled Trains across the non-electrified routes of Indian Railways. This is mainly done to reduce the emissions and maintain a environmental friendly atmosphere.

This video was captured on two separate occasions and
one can notice the ratio of EMD usage has drastically increased whencompared to the ALCo's.EMD's deliver approx 4000 ~ 4500 Horse Power.

This doesn't mean the ALCO's will completely go away at once, they will gradually retire from mainline duty. Presently production of ALCo's have completely stopped for Indian Railways , only the Dual Cab EMD's are currently being produced.

WDM4 was India's first EMD locomotive, designated as GT16 that came into service in 1962. and about 72 Locomotives were imported.Technologically the General Motors WDM-4 was superior to ALCO's but Indian Railways required a transfer of technology agreement that would allow these locomotives to be manufactured in India. General Motors did not agree to the transfer of technology agreement so the ALCO got preference and was chosen for in house production. WDM4's were withdrawn from service with age.

Indian Railways once again imported EMD's in 1998.The EMD GT46MAC freight-hauling diesel-electric locomotive with AC electric transmission was built by General Motors Electro-Motive Division in 1997–1998 for Indian Railways and classed as WDG4.13 Locomotives were built by EMD and a further eight were exported in kit form and were assembled in India. EMD GT46PAC is a passenger hauling Locomotive. The first set of 10 locos were manufactured by the Electro Motive Division (EMD) of (General Motors)

Both the classes entered service in 1999. Post getting the transfer of Technology construction has been under license in India by the Diesel Locomotive Works , Varanasi. Presently more than 1600 EMD's have been manufactured in India.

Location : Rajanukunte , Bangalore.

RAREST Loco Combo and Freight Train : Indian Railways

This is a pretty rare Loco Combo one could ever get to see . A WDG-4 Electromotive which is ideally powering the freight train in lead and in trail is a WDG-3A & the rarest species of Indian Railways - the WDP-1 the cute little bald head baby (Alco Variant) together powering the Car carrier Freight Wagon which is used for transporting Cars on rails.

This was a quick grab while I was on board a train something unexpected.

WDP-1 (Bo-Bo bogies. 80 tons weight. Rated speed of 140 kmph. 12 cylinder engine. 2300 hp. Built by Diesel Locomotive Works in 1970.The WDP-1 ALCo's are only homed by 2 Diesel shed's in the whole of Indian Railways network. One at Tugalkabad Diesel Loco shed in the North and the other at Vijayawada Diesel Loco Shed in the South. These Locomotives traverse only in specific areas and getting to spot this in Bangalore is a extreme rarity.

Shortest Freight Trains | SINGLE Vs TWIN | Indian Railways

Enjoy watching yet another rare Freight Train action.A funny one though, two short Freight Trains , first one being a single EMD Loco hauled with 3 BOXN Wagons usually meants for transporting Coal/ Iron-ore while the second one being Two separate freight BOXN Trains coupled together with ALCO's in lead doing the hauling duties and EMD's in the center. EMD's seemed to be in a idle state.

The Whistle sound that you hear in the video is usually a practice at the unmanned level crossings mostly found in remote interior locations where the vehicle traffic is very thin. These level crossings don't have barricades and a person is deployed to blow a whistle when a train is approaching in order to avert any Vehicles or trespassers from crossing the Tracks. The whistler needs to stay due diligent as soon as he hears a honk from a distance he needs to make sure everything is clear for the train to pass by.The Whistler blows the whistle continuously until the Train crosses the level crossing . Unfortunately these whistlers don't have a Walky Talkie or any form of Radio communication from the near by station about approaching trains. They have to rely on the long distance honks. I pity them.

Locomotives :
1. KJM EMD WDG4 12030.
2. KJM WDG3A ALCo Twins 13249 + 13299 and KJM WDG4 12646 + Golden Rock WDG4 12806.

About WDG 4
The EMD is a freight-hauling diesel-electric locomotive with AC electric transmission built by General Motors Electro-Motive Diesel in 1997–1998 for Indian Railways, where they are classed as WDG 4. Thirteen were built by EMD as order #958647, and a further eight were exported in kit form and were assembled in India. The class entered service in 1999.

Further construction has been under license in India by the Diesel Locomotive Works (DLW); more than 60 additional locomotives have been built as of 2006. They are numbered from #12001 upward. A similar type, the EMD GT46PAC, has also been produced for passenger service in India.

As of 2007, EMD and DLW have begun building GT46Ace's using IGBT technology to replace the older gate turn-off thyristor technology. Newer editions with 4,500 hp (3,400 kW) have been produced. Over 1,000 WDG-4 locomotives are currently in operation. Also WDG 4's newer version and dual cab locomotive WDG 4D are better to drive and it has more power.
