On the morning of my last day in Morelia, which was my last day in Mexico as well, I went on a photographic walking tour and admired the many churches, monasteries and historic buildings in the centre of the city. Morelia has an impressive collection of more than 1,100 historic buildings that were built between the 16th and 19th centuries.
My guide Rodrigo picked up me up at noon and we drove to Lake Cuitzeo where we visited the pueblo magico (magic village) of Cuitzeo. This small town features a 16th century Augustinian former monastery with well-preserved wall frescoes. Rodrigo even showed me the 17th century bathroom stalls that were used by the monks until 1972. The expansive building is wonderfully preserved and provides great insights into monastic life during colonial times.
The rain started to pour down just before I had to get back on my bus to Guadalajara on my last day in Mexico. I had spent almost two weeks in the colonial heartland of Mexico and resolved that I would have to come back soon to visit more of Mexicos colonial gems.

Best Mexican STREET FOOD in MICHOACAN, MEXICO | KING OF CARNITAS + Gaspacho on STEROIDS
We're in the state of Michoacan, Mexico a place which is synonymous with carnitas, avocados and a strong indigenous food culture. In this video we take you on a massive Michoacan street food tour. We travel from Morelia to Quiroga a town famous for its carnitas- pork slow cooked in lard. Here we eat carnitas from Don Jaime Ayala who locals say make the BEST carnitas. His 5th generation family business is so popular and we can see why- the carnitas are sensational. We then head back to Morelia the capital city and take you on a street food tour of the city. From the famous gaspacho and enchiladas to a dish called morisqueta that is the definition of ugly delicious! We hope you enjoy this massive Michoacan street food tour.
What we ate and where we ate it:
1. Carnitas at Don Jaime Ayala's stall outside Plaza Don Vasco, Centro, Segundo, 58420 Quiroga, Michoacán. Get there early (we arrived at around 10:00am) Don Jaime is often sold out by 12:30pm.
2. Gaspachos from Gaspachos El Guero de la Merced, Andrés Quintana Roo 192, Centro histórico de Morelia, 58000 Morelia, Mich. Open daily 10:30am to 8:00pm.
3. Enchiladas placera at Antojitos Mexicanos Carmelita, Centro histórico de Morelia, 58000 Morelia, Michoacán. Open daily 9:00am to midnight.
4. Guanabana (soursop) paleta at Paleteria Y Neveria La Michoacana, Centro histórico de Morelia, 58000 Morelia, Michoacán.
5. Morisqueta at Tostadas Apatzingan, Narciso Mendoza 37, Centro histórico de Morelia, 58000 Morelia, Mich. Open 10:30am to 8:00pm daily except Sunday where they close at 7:15pm.
