New composition: Xīhú Suite; relaxing contemplative music; inspiring, romantic, neo-classical

The Xīhú Suite (pronounced she-hoo) from MusicTreks ( ) is a contemplative musical tour of beautiful West Lake at Hangzhou, China. Composed by D. Ellicott Ray, the Suite features traditional Chinese instruments accompanied by a Western symphony orchestra. It was filmed in China by the composer, and M.M. Ray was the still photographer.

The Xīhú Suite is scored for six traditional Chinese instruments: Woodwinds (Xiǎo, Bāwū, and Small Dizi), percussion (Yángqín and Baeon), and bowed string (Èrhú).

The Suite is also scored for Western symphonic instruments, including strings (24 Violins, 8 Violas, 8 Cellos, and 6 Double Basses;) brass (6 French Horns); and a single woodwind (English Horn)
For a detailed description of the Xīhú Suite and the classic Chinese instruments used, go to MusicTreks.org.

Like all MusicTreks programs, this video features original “neoclassical” music that is relaxing, tranquil, contemplative, romantic, peaceful, inspirational, beautiful, and cinematic in tone.
No stock footage or photography, and no internet content of any kind, is used in any MusicTreks.org videos. This video, including all music and images, is original, and is © 2022 by D. Ellicott Ray.

WEST LAKE, THE SETTING FOR THE Xīhú Suite

When we visited Xīhú (pro-nounced she-hoo) at Hangzhou (hong-chō) in China’s Zhejiang Province, we were immediately struck by the astounding beauty and serenity of the lake and its surroundings. For Chinese and Westerners alike, a pilgrimage to Xīhú (English translation, “West Lake”) can be a transcendent experience, inspiring the contemplative and the meditative in the human spirit.

In the 8th century, the marshy ground on the western edge of Hangzhou was dredged to create a lake surrounded by parks and gardens. The fame of Xīhú spread, and during the Southern Song Dynasty (1127 to 1279), Hangzhou became a vibrant center of Buddhism and Taoism. The wealth of the region made possible the construction of many temples that we can visit today, a thousand years later. The area remains an important locus of Chan Buddhism.

Many Chinese – and many Westerners who have spent time at Xīhú – believe it to be the most beautiful site in all of China. For more than a thousand years, painters and poets from across China have come to Xīhú for inspiration. In much of Chinese art, we can see the willows and ferns surrounding the lake; the Lotus blossoms floating in forest pools; the water birds and butterflies; and the plum and peach trees flowering along the shore. Our experience at Xīhú was unforgettable.

Among the sites we filmed for the Xīhú Suite are the Lingyin Temple and Feilai Feng Grottoes. The Lingyin Temple, literally translated as “Temple of the Soul’s Retreat,” is preeminent among the Buddhist temples in the Wulin Mountains on the west shore of the lake. It’s one of the largest temples in China. According to legend, the temple was founded by the Indian monk Huili, in 328 A.D.

The Feilai Feng Grottoes are part of the Lingyin Temple complex. According to legend, the mountain where the grottoes are located was miraculously transported to China from India; hence the name Feilai Feng (literally, “the peak that flew hither”). The Grottoes, with Buddhist figures carved in caves and into the limestone cliffs, include 150 shrines and more than 400 carvings, some dating from the Tang Dynasty (618 to 907).

THE Xīhú Suite AND TRADITIONAL CHINESE MUSIC

I’ve always been fascinated by traditional Chinese music and how it contrasts so dramatically with Western music. Legend has it that thousands of years ago, a man named Ling Lun was so entranced by the sound of birds that he fashioned a bamboo flute and tuned it to match the birds’ songs. That may or may not be true, but we do know that Chinese music dates back nearly 10,000 years, making China’s musical tradition one of the oldest in the world. The earliest flutes, made from the wing bone of cranes, date back to the Neolithic era.

In 2015, while excavating tombs at Zaoyang city, Hubel province, archeologists discovered a plucked string instrument buried for 2,500 years. Called a “Se,” it has 50 twisted silk strings stretched on a rectangular frame. The find was significant, as the Zaoyang Se is the oldest musical instrument ever found in China. Equally significant, it closely resembles traditional Chinese dulcimers still played today, including the yángqín.

The continuity from ancient times to today applies not only to the instruments, but also to the music they play. Several times in the history of China, authorized musical forms and structure were codified and governed by an imperial bureau. At these times, the structure was fixed; it could not, and did not, change. Even in the absence of edicts, there has never been sufficient impetus to change this beautiful ancient music.
