Travel Guide - Zagreb - Croatia - Amazing Things to Do in Zagreb & Top Zagreb Attractions #zagreb
Discover with us the most amazing things to do in Zagreb and Top Zagreb attractions.
The region with this capital and largest city of Croatia has a rich history dating from Roman times. With more than 1 million inhabitants, Zagreb metropolitan area is known for its diverse economy, high quality of living, museums, and sporting and entertainment events.
The capital was once two towns, Gradec and the smaller Kaptol. By visiting the larger Gradec, you will immerse yourself in the medieval history of Zagreb. The Funicular public transport even leads to the raised hill, one of the world's shortest, with a track length of 66 meters. From 6.30 AM to 10 PM, the rides are every 10 minutes and take only 64 seconds.
Nearby you can admire 13th-century St. Mark's Church, one of the oldest architectural monuments in the city. On the roof, tiles are laid to represent the coat of arms of Zagreb. The church was radically reconstructed in the second half of the 14th century.
Combine visiting St Mark's Church with a historical performance in the square. A traditional change of the Guard of Honor by the Cravat Regiment is organized from April to October, a couple of times a month.
The second original medieval town, the eastern Kaptol, was inhabited mainly by clergy and today houses a majestic Neo-Gothic Cathedral dedicated to the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary and kings Saint Stephen and Saint Ladislaus. With a height of 108 meters, this is the second tallest building in Croatia and the most monumental sacral building in Gothic style southeast of the Alps. The cathedral holds a spectacular treasury with one of the county's wealthiest exhibit collections. Some of them are older than 900 years.
A 5-minute walk from the cathedral is Ban Jelačić Square, the city's central square. The square's history begins in 1641 and later made part of the downtown pedestrian zone. There are many medieval streets in the surroundings, an ideal place to buy souvenirs or Licitar Hearts, a traditional symbol of the country.
Are you looking for the best view in the area? Visit the mid-13th century fortress Medvedgrad, only 10 km from the center. Enjoy the unique panoramic view of the city from an elevation of over 500 meters. The defensive complex was built after Mongols invaded Zagreb in 1242 when the medieval city was destroyed and burned.
If you enjoy walking through beautiful city parks, visit English-style Maksimir Park. Opened in 1794, it was the first large public park in South-Eastern Europe. It forms part of the city's cultural heritage and is a habitat for many plant and animal species. The park also houses the city zoo with more than 275 animal species.
For art lovers, Zagreb definitely has a lot to offer. Start with a visit to The Art Pavilion. Established in 1898, it is the oldest gallery in Southeast Europe and the only purpose-built gallery in the city. The gallery has a total display area of 600 m squared and has organized more than 700 exhibitions throughout its history.
The Museum of Arts and Crafts is just a 12-minute walk from The Art Pavilion. The grand historicist palace from the 19th century is one of the first purpose-built edifices devised to merge the museum and school functions. On more than 2,000 m squared of museum space, you can find about 160,000 unique objects from the 4th to 20th centuries.
Right next to the complex is another interesting, if somewhat controversial, art museum, The Mimara Museum. Mr. Mimara, the original art collector, built his 3,700 artifacts collection by forging, looting, and swindling. According to some estimates, it is the greatest collection of fakes in the world.

10 Things to do in Zagreb, Croatia Travel Guide Video Transcript:
Our travels in Croatia brought us to Zagreb known for its lively street markets, vast green spaces, and varied architecture that spans numerous movements, we reached the capital and hit the ground running. In this video we’re going to show you some fun things to do in Zagreb, as well as share our favourite place for sampling the most delicious truffle dishes:
From the main square you have the Flower Market, and if you head up the steps, that leads to Zagreb’s Central Market.
Zagreb Cathedral is one the city’s main landmarks. This is the largest sacral building in the Gothic style southeast of the Alps, and it’s pretty easy to spot the spires wherever you are in the city.
Our walk through the Upper Town eventually lead us to Tkalčićeva. These days you’ll find a lively street lined with restaurants, cafes and bars.
We reached what may be the most memorable museum in the whole world: The Museum of Broken Relationships. The museum is a global crowd-sourced project that deals with heartbreak. Inside you’ll find curious objects with a corresponding story.
St. Mark’s Church bears the medieval coat of arms of Croatia, Dalmatia and Slavonia on the left-hand side, and the emblem of Zagreb on the right.
To enjoy city views of the Lower Town there are some great vantage points along the promenade.
On our way down from the Upper Town, we walked through Zagreb’s famed Stone Gate. Once the eastern gate into the medieval settlement now houses a small chapel.
Let’s take a break from all the sightseeing to introduce you to one of our favourite restaurants in Zagreb when it comes to truffle dishes
And craving more views of the city, we then went up Zagreb 360.
Known as the Green Horseshoe, this park was named after Milan Lenuci who came up with the idea of creating connected green spaces right in the downtown. The horseshoe is home to several museums, galleries and archives.
If you’re into hockey and you visit Zagreb during the season, you can catch a game in the city. We watched Medveščak Zagreb play.
And that’s it for our visit to Zagreb! We hope you enjoyed this travel guide and that you got a few ideas of things to see, eat and do on your own visit.

Today we're in Zagreb, the capital of Croatia! We love this city and can't wait to show you around.
The first stop is the main square, Trg Bana Josipa Jelacica, named after ban Josip Jelacic, who was a Croatian army general in the Austro-Hungarian Empire in the 19th century. He really fought for Croatian independence in the Empire, and he's an important figure in Croatian history.
Just to the east of the statue is Mandusevac, a legendary fountain that is said to be the reason that Zagreb its name. Apparently there was a tired soldier on the way back from battle, and asked a girl named Manda to scoop him (zagrabiti) some water from the spring, where the fountain now stands. So Zagreb came from zagrabiti.
Next we visited Dolac Market in Zagreb. It's the biggest and most popular open market in the city and it's great for buying anything from fruits and vegetables, to fish, nuts, dairy products and more. It was first opened in 1930.
At the top of the stairs, sits Kumica Barica which is the statue of the lady, representing all of the vendors that have sold at the market all these years.
Tkalciceva was our next stop. It's my favorite street in all of Zagreb. It's lined on both sides with many different cafes. It has a great vibe, lots of energy and is typically filled with people hanging out with friends, sipping coffee.
We walked through the Stone Gate to get to the upper town. The Kamenita Vrata was built in 1266 and is a holy place of worship for many residents of Zagreb. There was a devastating fire that happened in 1731, and everything burned, except for a painting of the Virgin Mary, so it's seen as a sort of miracle, and people come to light a candle and say a prayer.
St. Mark's Square is in the upper town, and has St. Mark's Church right in the middle. The church is most famous for it's colorful tiles on the roof. There are two coat of arms on the roof, one representing the city of Zagreb, and the other representing the Kingdom of Zagreb, Slavonia and Dalmatia. Here on the square, there are also the parliament and government buildings.
The Museum of Broken Relationships can also be found in the upper town. It's a very interesting museum filled with little mementos of relationships that have broken in some way. Each memento has a story, and you can read about each one.
The Lotrscak Tower is just steps away from the museum. It typically fires a cannon every day at noon, and residents used to set their watches according to the cannon each day. There is also a great view point from the top of the tower, looking all out over the city.
Next, we took the funicular down to the lower town. It's the shortest one in the world, at just 66m long. A quick, but convenient (and fun) ride if you're in Zagreb.
Ilica Street is the next place we visited. It's line with shops and is one of the most popular streets in Zagreb. The trams also run along the street, and it's a great place to wander through the city.
The Drazen Petrovic Museum and Memorial Center was another place we visited. Drazen was one of Croatia's best basketball players, and played in the NBA. He really opened the door for other European players. Unfortunately, his career and life were cut short, when he tragically died in a car accident at just 28 years old. He's one of Croatia's most favorite sports legends, and many children look up to him as their role model.
King Tomislav Square was the last top on our tour of Zagreb. King Tomislav was the first Croatian King, so his statue sits on the square, just in front of the main train station. Behind the statue is Tomislavac, the beautiful park where you can picnic and relax in some greenery right in the center of town.
We hope you enjoyed the video and you visit Zagreb one day soon!

Top best places to visit in Zagreb, Croatia
Zagreb is the capital and the largest city of the Republic of Croatia.
Zagreb is known locally as Little Vienna because of the mix of cafe-culture, Austria-Hungarian architecture, neo-Gothic cathedrals and medieval old town.
Ban Jelacic Square, named after Croatian military hero, is the central and the largest square of the city.
It is located at the boundaries of the Upper Town... and the Lower Town.
In the Upper Town is the Zagreb Cathedral, a Roman Catholic church and the tallest and the most monumental sacral building in Croatia.
But the Stone Gate is the most significant oath site in town.
Inside the gate is the portrait of Mary with baby Jesus which is said to be sacred, because it is the only thing that survived the great fire in 1731.
Near the Stone Gate is situated St Mark’s Church. One of the oldest structures in Zagreb stands on the square surrounded by the government edifices.
St Catherine Church is another important landmark in the Upper Town, and next to it is the Lotrscak Tower.
From this fortified construction, which dates to the 13th century, is a very nice view of the city.
The core of the center of Lower Town is a U-shaped system of city squares with parks.
The green horseshoe is home to several organizations and museums, such as:
A gallery hosting major city exhibitions, the Art Pavilion.
A notable national collage, the Academy of Sciences and Arts.
A world famous cultural institution, the Archaeological Museum.
Built for passengers of the Orient Express train, the Esplanade Hotel.
The central archival system in the country, the Croatian State Archives.
A place with a great art collection, the Mimara Museum.
The National Theater, a venue for theater, opera and ballet.
The Museum of Arts and Crafts and the Academy of Music.
A good place to go to get bird’s eye view of the city is the Zagreb Eye, an observation deck and a bar.

What to do in Zagreb? Zagreb is the capital and largest city of Croatia. For more than a thousand years, it has been the meeting point of Eastern and Central Europe. Zagreb has the feel of a small town, even though it is a modern capital. There is a large old hilltop district with cobblestone streets and squares that are still lit by gas lamps.
