No. 1150 - Historic Town of Zabid - Yemen 🇾🇪
Zabid is a fortified town located on the western coast of Yemen. This site has the highest concentration of mosques in the county, with 86 in total. 14 of which are from the Rasulid period, during the time when Zabid was the capital of Yemen. The first to be built is the Al-Asha'ir, the town’s central mosque, and undoubtedly the greatest. The town is connected by a network of narrow alleys, alongside southern Arabian Peninsula-style buildings. The houses are made out of burnt bricks giving the town outstanding aesthetic appeal. Due to its Islamic institution, which attracted students from all over the world, Zabid played a significant role in the spread of Islam. In 1993 the town was added to the UNESCO World Heritage Sites list due to its excellent archaeological and historical features. But in 2000, as a result of the Yememi Government's inadequate maintenance and conservation efforts, the site was listed on the List of World Heritage in Danger.
