Cascade du Salin (Chaudeyrolles 43) 4k
Chaudeyrolles, petit village d'une centaine d'âmes, perché à 1300m d'altitude, non loin du Mont Mézenc, au pied du Mont Signon.
Le cratère est éteint depuis 12 000 ans fut le siège d'une explosion phréatomagmatique (magma qui rencontre une nappe d'eau).
On estime que sa cheminée atteignait les 400 mètres de profondeur, de l'orifice géant se sont écoulées de gigantesques colonnes de vapeurs d'eau, et l'orifice s'est ainsi agrandi par de violentes et récurrentes explosions. Des nuages de débris s'élevaient à plus de 10 km de haut. C'est un maar qui a laissé place à un lac qui avec le temps est devenu une tourbière. Un sondage a montré que 50 m de sédiments tapissaient le fond de cette cuvette naturelle.
On les appelle aussi narses, du latin nartia qui signifie marécage. Les paysans ont longtemps utilisé cette tourbe pour se chauffer, découpées en briquettes puis séchées elles servaient de combustible, on dit qu'une seule briquette maintenait le foyer toute une nuit.
Depuis 1998, les narces sont protégées pour préserver leur richesse biologique, quelques hectares de tourbière ont été ainsi sauvés où les droséras petites plantes carnivores et les oeillets superbes subsistent, au loin, interdites d'accès. Dans les prés paissent des fins gras du Mezenc.
