Welcome to our video on the top things to do in Yangshuo, China. Yangshuo is a small town in southern China known for its stunning karst mountains, winding rivers, and beautiful rural landscapes. Here are some of the best places to visit and activities to enjoy in Yangshuo.

Start your visit with a Li River cruise, one of the most famous activities in the region. The cruise from Guilin to Yangshuo takes you past dramatic karst peaks, lush bamboo groves, and traditional villages along the riverbanks. It’s a perfect way to experience the breathtaking scenery that has made Yangshuo so famous.

Explore the Yulong River, a quieter and less crowded alternative to the Li River. You can enjoy a relaxing bamboo raft ride along the river, passing through peaceful countryside and picturesque villages. The calm waters and stunning landscapes make it one of the most tranquil experiences in Yangshuo.

Visit Moon Hill, a famous karst formation with a large, moon-shaped hole at the top. Hike up the stone steps to reach the summit, where you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the surrounding countryside. It’s a popular spot for both hikers and photographers.

For a more adventurous experience, go rock climbing in Yangshuo, which is known as one of the best climbing destinations in China. The town offers numerous climbing routes for all skill levels, and the karst cliffs provide an exciting challenge for climbers.

Stroll through West Street (Xi Jie), the heart of Yangshuo’s tourist area. This lively pedestrian street is filled with shops, cafes, and restaurants offering both local and international cuisine.

Don’t miss the Impression Liu Sanjie show, an outdoor performance set against the backdrop of the Li River and the karst mountains. Directed by Zhang Yimou, the famous director behind the 2008 Beijing Olympic opening ceremony, the show combines traditional Chinese music, dance, and stunning light effects to create a spectacular cultural experience.

Take a bike ride through Yangshuo’s countryside, where you can explore quiet rural roads, small villages, and rice paddies. Cycling is one of the best ways to experience the natural beauty of the region at your own pace, and you’ll have plenty of opportunities to stop and take in the scenery.

Visit Silver Cave, one of the largest and most beautiful caves in Yangshuo. This karst cave is filled with impressive stalactites and stalagmites, all illuminated by colorful lights.

For a peaceful retreat, head to Fuli Ancient Town, located just a short drive from Yangshuo. This quiet, riverside town is known for its traditional Chinese fan paintings and well-preserved architecture.

Lastly, be sure to try some local Yangshuo cuisine, including famous dishes like beer fish, which is made with fresh fish from the Li River and cooked with local beer. The town offers plenty of restaurants where you can sample both traditional and modern takes on local dishes.

MUST SEE SIGHTs of CHINA for your FIRST VISIT! (Top 10)

These are my TOP 10 MUST SEE SIGHTS and HIDDEN GEMS that we saw during our 5 weeks in China. From busy cities to cute hipster towns. Natural wonders to man made gems. China really has everything need to make it your next favourite travel destination: this is your China travel inspiration!

In this video, we look at the best places to visit and some of the most useful China travel advice for your first visit: including train travel, how to access the internet through a VPN and how to deal with culture shock.

EVERY PLACE FEATURED IN THE VIDEO (in alphabetical order).

BEST VPN FOR CHINA: To access any western social media platforms in China, you're going to need a VPN. Ivacy offers a great VPN for a very affordable price (ad):

APPS TO DOWNLOAD
I should really have mentioned this in the video. Before your trip, make sure you download WeChat (it's free) for scanning things in shops and restaurants for translation. Didi is also a good one, it's the Chinese Uber!

BEIJING
The capital of China is a big, busy city but it's little hutongs are a lot of fun to explore. The Summer Palace and the Forbidden City are both really worth seeing as well.

CHAKA SALT LAKE -
A lesser visited gem, located about 4 hours away from the city of Xining in Qinghai province. Famous for it's mirror-like reflections of the sky.

CULTURE SHOCK
I received a lot of comments saying that people had some reservations and fears about visiting China. To be honest, I felt the same way before I went.

DALI -
An ancient city in Yunnan province that has a little bit of everything that I love! There's nature on the shores of Erhai Lake and up in the heights of Canshan Mountain. The stunning Three Pagodas temple and the bustling culture of the ancient city.

GREAT WALL OF CHINA -
Requires no introduction. But I really recommend exploring the wilder and more remote areas of the wall, rather than the touristy sections. In this film I looked at 3 different areas and compared the strengths and weaknesses of each.

HONG KONG -
A giant, sprawling city. Which also has some amazing natural spots like Lantau Island and Kowloon Park, That's what I focussed on in my travel film.

KUNMING -
Kunming has a reputation for being a transport hub, but it's actually a really fun city to spend a few days. The Dragon Gate and Green Lake Park are particularly great and are the main focus of my travel guide linked above.

LIJIANG OLD TOWN -
A beautiful ancient town with stunning maze like streets. It rained most of the time we were there, so I went searching for the little hidden gems of the streets.

RAINBOW MOUNTAINS -
This was the best day that I had in China. Away from the Danxia Landform Geopark is a peaceful national park that is so worth exploring. It feels more like Australia or the US than China.

SHANGHAI -
The last stop that we had in China. You can get some amazing views from the World Financial Centre Viewpoint.

TRAIN TRAVEL IN CHINA
The main way we got around China. We booked everything through China Highlights, which made thinks very easy (not sponsored, just good):

VPN (virtual private network)
You need a VPN to access almost every western social media accounts in China. For an affordable, but good VPN use Ivacy (ad):

XIAN -
I spent 24 hours exploring Xian and it definitely wasn't enough time. The Terracotta Warriors are amazing, but my film focusses on the other gems of the city.

XINGPING -
Home to the best view in China: Laozhai Mountain.

YANGSHUO -
Beautiful karst mountains, rivers and hiking. My video guide features everything we did there and it's a pretty extensive list! Including instructions on how to get to the best viewpoint in the area.

Top 10 Places to Visit in China - Travel Documentary

China is one of the most fascinating travel destinations in the world, and in this video I will share with you my personal top 10 best places to visit.

From the ruins of the Great Wall to vibrant megacities. From surreal mountain landscapes to charming riverside villages. Today’s China is a beautiful, complicated, and captivating place.

I spent more than 18 months in China, spread over the course of a decade and a half. In the last years, I started filming the places that I traveled to, using regular cameras and drones. All footage in this travel documentary is shot by myself between 2010 and 2019.

Here's a brief overview of the places in this video.

We start this journey in the stunning riverside village of Fenghuang in central China. The wooden stilt houses are a spectacular sight, and the backstreets are still filled with old world charm. We then continue to Harbin, best known for its Winter tourism. Millions of people usually flock here to visit the amazing Ice and Snow Festival, to admire beautiful sculptures and palaces.

Yangshuo is another spot not to miss, mostly for its mesmerizing mountain landscape of limestone peaks. It’s a great place to witness life in the countryside, and has a relaxed vibe. After Yangshuo we travel to Beijing, the nation’s capital city. The impressive Forbidden City and the Temple of Heaven Park are two main highlights. And the nearby Great Wall of China is truly a sight to behold.

Zhangjiajie is the next destination on my list, and one of China’s most beautiful national parks. It formed the inspiration for the popular movie Avatar. You can get an aerial perspective from the many walkways, and don't miss out on the Glass Bridge here, if you dare at least. I continue my journey to Lhasa, the spiritual heartland of Tibet, and a place that left a deep impression on me. Take into a account that foreign travelers can only visit Tibet as part of a group tour.

Shanghai is a unique city with a jaw-dropping modern skyline, but also has some impressive historic architecture. It’s a busy place to visit, but also has many laidback neighborhoods and quiet streets. Yuanyang, on the other hand, is quintessential rural China, with an epic landscape of rice terraces. It’s a good place to meet some of the minorities living in the South of the country, and eat some local food.

I continue my travels in Qingdao, one of China’s most scenic coastal cities, located on the Yellow Sea. Many Chinese tourists come here to enjoy the beach and eat fresh seafood, but I was particularly impressed by the historic German buildings. I finish this journey in Hong Kong, easily one of my favorite cities in the world, and a perfect fusion between East and West.

Top 10 Villages to Visit in China - Historic Towns and Countryside (Travel Video)

Welcome to China’s villages and historic towns. Often touted for its ever changing city skylines, China’s countryside shows a very different side of the country. From beautiful riverside villages to snow covered mountain towns. From mysterious tulou (earthen buildings) to awe-inspiring rice terraces. Traveling rural China can be an eye-opening experience.

I spent more than 18 months in China, spread over the course of a decade and a half. In the last years, I started filming the places that I traveled to, using regular cameras and drones. All footage in this travel video is shot by myself between 2010 and 2019.

Here’s a brief overview of the content in this video:

We start off this journey in Yuanyang, a spectacular mountain region where you can find some of the world’s most jaw-dropping rice terraces. Staying with local families is a great way to explore the area, filled with breathtaking landscapes and friendly villages.

Xuexiang is located in the North of China, and is mostly known for its extreme Winter weather, with freezing temperatures and layers of snow. It’s a popular tourist attraction and beautiful sight. The ‘tulou’ buildings in Fujian province are the next destination. These structures were used by the local Hakka people as defense against rivaling communities and bandits. While many still function as homes, some are now used as restaurants and hotels for tourists.

Lijiang is one of China’s most beautiful historic towns, with classic architecture and narrow lanes that can be explored for days. Nearby Dali is worth a visit for its incredible Three Pagodas and Buddhist temple. We travel onwards to Xiahe, a tranquil town just outside Tibet proper. Join monks and pilgrims on traditional koras, and soke up Tibetan culture.

Yangshuo, on the banks of the Li River, might be one of China’s most famous villages, surrounded by mesmerizing limestone hills and mountains. It also provides a good insight into farming life in the country (you can rent bicycles and motorcycles for nice day trips). Shaoshan is a somewhat odd place. It’s the birthplace of Mao Zedong, regarded as the founder of the People’s Republic. The village is a popular stop on the ‘Red Tourism’ trail, a government propaganda campaign.

Fenghuang is a stunning ancient village in the same Hunan province, with incredible architecture, including stone bridges and towers, stilt houses, and a city wall. The next spot on my list is Zhujiajao a popular ‘water town’, not far from Shanghai.

We finish this tour in Pingyao, perhaps the best preserved walled town (or small city) in the country. It used to be an important center of trade and finance, and it’s fascinating to walk the quiet neighborhoods and intriguing alleyways.

The Beauty of Guilin | Southern China (4K)

It was a long dream of mine to visit this unique area around Guilin, Yangshou and Xingping in Asia. To be honest, it was on the very top of my bucket list. Now I finally made it to this picturesque landscape in the south of China and I should not be disappointed.

The karst peaks of Southern China are one of my favorite landscapes. But also capturing the Kormorant fishing on Li river, as it used to be centuries ago, was a big highlight. It was an absolute pleasure to shoot with Mr. Huang Gao Hui, one of the famous fishermen in Xingping. I was able to document a tradition that is unfortunately dying out, like many others, due to the increase of tourism in our ever developing world. The fact is, this man now earns far more through tourism that he would have done catching and selling fish locally.

Let me know your thoughts in the comments.

Best place to travel to in China in 2018: Yangshuo

Part 2 of our little vacation to Hong Kong, China, Taiwan. This one is a hidden gem that only some know about. Guilin/Yangshuo, but mostly Yangshuo. A small little rural town with beautiful rivers, lakes, mountains. Also an amazing walking street with lots of food and shopping without costing a lot of money. Very little pollution if you stay in the rural areas
