Places to see in ( Carlisle - UK )
Places to see in ( Carlisle - UK )
Carlisle is a city and the county town of Cumbria. Historically in Cumberland, Carlisle is also the administrative centre of the City of Carlisle district in North West England. Carlisle is located at the confluence of the rivers Eden, Caldew and Petteril, 10 miles (16 km) south of the Scottish border. Carlisle is the largest settlement in the county of Cumbria, and serves as the administrative centre for both Carlisle City Council and Cumbria County Council.
Carlisle became an important military stronghold; Carlisle Castle, still relatively intact, was built in 1092 by William Rufus, and once served as a prison for Mary, Queen of Scots. The castle now houses the Duke of Lancaster's Regiment and the Border Regiment Museum. In the early 12th century, Henry I allowed the foundation of a priory in Carlisle. The town gained the status of a city when its diocese was formed in 1133, and the priory became Carlisle Cathedral.
The introduction of textile manufacture during the Industrial Revolution began a process of socioeconomic transformation in Carlisle, which developed into a densely populated mill town. This, combined with its strategic position, allowed for the development of Carlisle as an important railway town, with seven railway companies sharing Carlisle railway station.
Nicknamed the Great Border City, Carlisle today is the main cultural, commercial and industrial centre for north Cumbria. It is home to the main campuses of the University of Cumbria and a variety of museums and heritage centres. The former County Borough of Carlisle had held city status until the Local Government Act 1972 was enacted in 1974.

Egremont Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Cumbria (although historically in Cumberland), and around 40 miles southwest of Carlisle, is the town of Egremont.
The known history of Egremont goes back to the 10th century when the Danes established a fort beside the River Ehen on the site of what later became Egremont Castle. In 1092 William II (a.k.a. William Rufus, son of William the Conqueror) took control of Cumberland which had previously been claimed by the Scots. A castle was built here, and later replaced in the 12th century with 13th century additions.
Egremont was granted a market charter in 1266 or 1267 (various sources give contradictory dates) during the reign of Henry III. It was in 1267 that the first Egremont Crab Fair took place, making it one of the oldest fairs in the world. The lord of Egremont started a tradition of giving away crab apples, from where it gets its name. Each annual fair consists of both modern and traditional events. One such notable event is the World Gurning Championships, where entrants put their head through a horse collar and compete to pull their best (or worst?) face!
In 1322 many were killed when the Scottish king Robert the Bruce sacked Egremont. The castle would eventually fall into ruin by the 16th century.
Early industries in Egremont included agriculture, weaving and dyeing. With the discovery of iron ore in the surrounding area, mining and quarrying became established industries in the town. By the 1830s there were several iron ore mining sites in the surrounding area.
In 1857 a railway station opened at Egremont. This was a branch of the Cumbrian Coast Line, connecting to Whitehaven, where iron ore was transported. Due to the gradual decline of the mining industry in the 20th century, the station closed to passengers in 1935. Between 1947 and 1965 it had reopened, but only for the use of workmen's trains. Today the main public transport connection is a bus route running between Egremont and Maryport via Whitehaven and Workington.
In 1974 the historical counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, along with the Furness Peninsula of Lancashire, merged to form the ceremonial county of Cumbria. Since then, Egremont has been part of the Borough of Copeland in Cumbria.
In 1982 rock band It Bites formed in Egremont. They are best known for their 1986 hit Calling All the Heroes.

Morecambe Bay - Places to visit, history and wildlife
Morecambe Bay is the largest intertidal area in the UK and is famed for its wildlife. However, there are many other fascinating sights to see. This short video shows highlights from around the bay based on my book ''The Cumbria and Lake District Coast'.
More about the book
In addition to tourist destinations such as castles, museums and and seaside resorts, the book describes the history and wildlife of the coast from Fleetwood to the Mull of Galloway. This includes the development of ports such as Barrow-in-Furness, Lancaster, Ulverston and Workington and the main RSPB and Cumbria Wildlife Trust nature reserves around the coast.
There are also tips on watching the waterbirds for which Morecambe Bay and the Solway Firth are famed and on where to see seals and tidal bores such as the Arnside Bore. The book is a must-read for travellers and local residents alike.

Workington Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located on the west coast of Cumbria (although historically in Cumberland), and around 30 miles southwest of Carlisle, is the town of Workington.
It is believed that a Roman fort stood where Workington is located today - one of several coastal defences to protect against attacks from the Scoti and the Caledonii tribes. The name 'Workington' derives from Old English 'Weorc', 'ingas' and 'tūn', literally translating to 'settlement of Weorc's people', where Weorc was presumably an Anglo-Saxon chieftain.
In 1573 a market charter was granted to Workington by Elizabeth I. It remained a small port and fishing community up until the 18th century, when the discovery of local iron ore and coalfields transformed it into a major industrial town.
Aided by the wealthy Curwen family, Workington established its first dock in the 1760s, exporting coal to Ireland. By 1800 over 30 mining pits had opened around the town. Other industries included shipbuilding, rope-making, sail-making, paper-making, brewing and iron founding.
In 1846 the railway arrived in Workington. At its industrial peak, two additional stations served the town: Workington Bridge (1847-1951) and Workington Central (1879-1965, although closed to passengers from 1931). Today Workington Station is situated on the Cumbrian Coast Line which runs between Carlisle and Barrow-in-Furness.
In 1856 Henry Bessemer revolutionised the steel-making industry with the creation of the Bessemer Process. This was a method of converting pig iron into steel by blasting hot air through to drive away the impurities. This resulted in a substantially increased demand for Cumberland Pig Iron, so that by 1882 there were 21 blast furnaces in Workington, which was the centre of steel production in northwest England for around 100 years.
In 1974 the historical counties of Cumberland and Westmorland, along with the Furness Peninsula of Lancashire, merged to form the ceremonial county of Cumbria. Since then, Workington has been part of the Borough of Allerdale in Cumbria.
Whilst the coal and steel industries, upon which much of Workington was built, have dwindled, the town retains its industrial roots. Today one of its main employers is the Port of Workington. Situated at the Prince of Wales Dock on the north bank of the River Derwent, the port handles up to 500,000 tonnes of cargo per year.
