A small, but beautiful historic city in The Netherlands. As it's off the beaten path for international tourists it has a typical Dutch vibe to it. The city is located in the Green Heart Area, which is an area well known by its beautiful countryside. It's the region where the most famous Dutch cheeses are produced. As a major city in the Green Heart region, Woerden became an important city for the trade in cheeses, like Gouda cheese. Let me show you the highlights of the City of Woerden in this video.

This was such a treat to visit and film! Woerden Marketing set us up with a lovely day to explore this wonderful city, but you can easily do it yourself and we definitely encourage you to do so!
🧀 Your first stop should be at the Tourism Office, but it doubles as the Cheese Warehouse (Kaaspakhuis in Dutch). Take the cheese experience tour to understand why Woerden is so popular. You can take the regular tour as we did, or create your own cheese!
⛪ The Tourism Office can also set you up with a tour guide who can't wait to share the secrets of their city. Our was Hans and he was such a gem! I can't even believe we got to go up the Petrus Tower (Petrustoren)..and it was JUST US! Not sure which was more epic, the view from the tower or the windmill. But, guys, the Roman boat that was found in the parking garage kind of blew my mind!
🍴 Then, to have a traditional lunch in an old military barracks was the icing on the cake.

Zegveld is a small village, only a few kilometers from the city of Woerden and located in the center of the 'Green Heart of Holland'. Zegveld was founded in 1315 by the first farmer settler. Zegveld has currently 2,300 residents. Recently a few housing quarters were developed.

Woerden was founded by the Romans to defend the Roman Empire against the Barbarians at the Northern side of the river Rhine. The Romans called their defense Castellum Lauren which later was called Woerden bij the Germanic tribes living in the area. From 695 AD the Bishop of Utrecht ruled over Woerden and the city was fortified in the Middle Ages as it was located in the heart of The Netherlands between Utrecht, Rotterdam, Amsterdam and The Hague and therefore a very important transport hub over the Rhine. The city has multiple churches and a cathedral, a castle (Castle of Woerden), fortified city walls, and a huge windmill build on an artificial hilltop. The city of Woerden has a population of 55,000.

Gouda (Netherlands) - Day Trip to this Dutch Cheese Capital (4K)
Gouda is an incredible Dutch town located between Rotterdam and Utrecht in the province of South Holland (Netherlands). The city is famous throughout the world for its cow-milk-based yellow cheese that was named after the city. This iconic cheese has been sold for centuries on the market square (Markt). The city is also known for its traditional stroopwafel. In addition, in Gouda, you'll be able to see incredible buildings, including the gothic Town Hall which dates back to the 15th century and is the oldest town halls in the Netherlands. Woerden Castle is located in the city of Woerden in the Netherlands. The castle was build in 1159 by the bishop of Utrecht. In 1407 the castle was renovated and fortified. The castle is built like a fortress and never used by a duke or nobleman. The walls are 3,5 meter thick to withstand canons. In the later centuries the original defensive towers were demolished.

Each year in Woerden, local farmers gather together. The meet up in a small farm house to taste cheese. 100 blocks of Gouda in different shapes and sizes. It's more than just a contest about cheese, however. It is about honoring a hard day's work. It is about encouraging your neighbor. It is about bringing together the community. Once, farmers gathered together all across the Netherlands. Now, the market in Woerden is the very last traditional market left.
