10 best waterfront sights of Liverpool & the Mersey Estuary
Having written a travel guide to the Mersey Estuary, I sometimes get asked for suggestions for places to visit around the estuary that are more off the beaten track and I thought I’d give ten ideas in this video.
This includes places in Liverpool, Wirral, Runcorn, Widnes and Warrington including some that I found surprising when researching the book.

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

York is a walled city in northeast England that was founded by the ancient Romans.
1. Visit Clifford’s Tower located in the heart of York. It is the only remaining part of the York Castle. It is named after the Clifford Family who were long time custodians of the castle. This castle was built in the late 1060’s.
2. Take a walk around the City Walls. At 3.4 kilometers long, the beautifully preserved walls are the longest medieval town walls in England. This trail takes approximately two and a half hours to walk. It is free to explore this trail.
3. Visit the Howard Castle, one of the premier homes of England. The Castle is a baroque masterpiece, conceived by Charles Howard, 3rd Earl of Carlisle.
Liverpool, the city where the river Mersey meets the Irish Sea. It is also, known as the hometown of the Beatles.
4. Enjoy the view from the radio city tower
5. Take a 360-degree tower tour in royal Liver Building to see the Liverpool skyline from the 15th floor and learn the history of this building and take a pick behind the clock.

If you have a chance and extra time, I recommend driving through villages to get a feel for the countryside. It is beautiful, diverse, and very accessible by train too. Often only a few hours from the nearest airport.
Edinburgh is hilly capital of Scotland. It has a medieval old town and elegant gardens and buildings. It is a coastal city, and there are a variety of beaches and harbors that are perfect for relaxing on during a warm summer’s day.
10. The Royal Mile is at the heart of Edinburgh’s old town. It is approximately 1.81 km in length, and it has good collection of stores, bars and restaurants. You want to stay there if possible because everything will be in walking distance for you.
Scotland has been making cashmere products for centuries, using its nice soft water to process the fiber. If you look to buy cashmere, you will have plenty opportunities to do it on the Royal Mile.
11. Edinburgh Castle self-guided audio tour will take up to three hours to explore. It has a lot of museums and stores. Also, you will see a stunning view of the Edinburgh skyline.

Shrewsberry, the laidback little town in western England. It is a totally gorgeous place to visit for a day or even for a few hours.
By the way, Charles Darwin grew up in Shrewsberry. The old school where Darwin was educated turned into the now Shrewsberry Library.

It offers a collection of attractions including cultural activities, sports, water adventure and history. It’s also famed for several landmarks, including a performing arts venue, a storied sports franchises, a war museum and shopping malls.

It draws me in this place ever since I went back over 10 years ago when the Stone Roses had reformed. The places we visited all have a story and also incredible views and wildlife. Everyone local we met wanted to chat and were absolutely a pleasure to listen too. A real pride is something I’ve noticed in this area. It was great to bring someone along who had never experienced the area and to see what they thought. Ps there are no filters on any of these shots as usual. It was just what I saw. 10. Widnes, Cheshire
How apt it is to begin this listing in Widnes! This town in Cheshire is the 10th on this list. The town located on the banks of the River Mersey, is somewhat paradoxical. From the surface, you’d believe you could enjoy scenic views here as you walk along the waterfront. However, there’s more about this town than meets the eye. For example, if you’re enticed by all that, you should know that this place is likely to place you on a continuous downward spiral of ill health. Taking the health question as captured by the latest census, you’ll realize that it compares poorly to its neighbouring local authorities. Another index of deprivation that ranks this town poorly is crime. If the available figures are anything to go by, your safety isn’t quite guaranteed in this town.
9. Swindon
Let’s visit southwest England to find the next town on this list. Ordinarily, this town offers a mix of culture, history, and nature, as can be seen in its museum. More about this can be seen or admired at the renowned art collections deposited in the Swindon Museum and Art Gallery. Since 2022, however, Swindon has entered the list of the most depressing towns in England for a number of reasons. Apart from being a commuter town, it lacks specialist well-paid employment. The county lines operations and high concern about crime are another cause for concern. Little wonder the town was branded the most average town in Britain by reviewers. Those visiting the town centre feel that its lifeblood has been sucked away by the designer outlet and the Orbital Shopping Park, describing it further as now a boarded-up, post-apocalyptic, wasteland of tramps and drunks.
8. Croydon
If not for the presence of London, Croydon would have been given city status. But the large town in South London is truly depressing, making it unfit to be regarded as a city. Located 15 kilometres south of Charing Cross, it’s part of the London Borough of Croydon which is a local government district of Greater London. Of course, Croydon is one of Greater London’s largest commercial districts. While London is definitely a great city competing for the slot of the best city in Europe, travellers and investors don’t often see it that way because not everywhere in the capital is great. Even those living in the town aren’t happy to find themselves there and will go to any length to be out of the dungeon. No wonder it’s named one of the UK’s most depressing.

This town and unitary authority that enjoys borough status in Bedfordshire is certainly not the right place to live. The phenomenon is not exactly new. For the past two decades, Luton has been labelled negatively. The softest expressions used to describe Luton by the majority of reviewers are “ugly,” “grey,” and “depressing.” It has also been a regular feature on different lists discussing Britain’s ‘worst’ or ‘most depressing’ areas.

I’m always looking for something different and this fits the bill. Around Widnes and Spike Island, the West Bank offers wonderful views and really interesting architecture. Over the Silver Jubilee bridge is never disappointing and Runcorn town centre has plenty of eating places. Wigg Island backs onto some stunning views and fantastic wildlife so what more can I ask for? Albeit small the Marsh Harrier is after 8 minutes. But stunning. All the very best Paul. Jan 2023

Widnes Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the county of Cheshire (although historically in Lancashire), and around 12 miles east, and slightly south, of central Liverpool, is the town of Widnes.
Up until the mid 19th century, the area we now know as Widnes was little more than a collection of scattered hamlets situated on marsh and moorland. This all began to change in 1847, when chemist and industrialist John Hutchinson established a chemical factory at Spike Island. This is an artificial island between the Mersey Estuary and the Sankey Canal, which was England's first ever canal, having opened in 1757.
The location of the factory on Spike Island meant that all the raw materials could be transported via the canal and railway, and the finished products could be transported via the same means. Further chemical factories were soon built nearby and the town grew rapidly. The demand for labour led to large-scale immigration to the area from Wales, Ireland, Poland and Lithuania. The substances being produced included soap, borax, soda ash, salt cake and bleaching powder. Other industries including iron and copper works soon developed.
In 1873 the railway arrived in Widnes, and was initially named Farnworth for Widnes. Farnworth at the time was a village just north of the town, which has since been absorbed to become a suburb. Today the station provides direct links to Liverpool in the west and Manchester and further afield to the east. It is believed that Paul Simon wrote the song Homeward Bound at Widnes station.
During the 1890s the chemical industry in Widnes went into decline as more efficient methods of making alkali were developed elsewhere.
In 1905 the Widnes–Runcorn Transporter Bridge opened, providing the town with its first direct link south of the Mersey via road traffic. In 1961 this was replaced by the Runcorn–Widnes Bridge, which was renamed the Silver Jubilee Bridge in 1977.
Historically the River Mersey has acted as the boundary between the counties of Cheshire to the south and Lancashire to the north. Up until 1974, Widnes belonged to the latter until the formation of the Borough of Halton. Since then it has become part of the county of Cheshire.
Widnes is represented in sport primarily by Widnes Vikings, who play rugby league. They were founded in 1875 and play their home games at the Halton Stadium, which is shared by Widnes Football Club, who were founded in 2003.

The Bore tidal phenomenon doesn’t happen all the time, I just turned up when it did. A great family day out with great views and fantastic wildlife for those keen on spotting. Started at Spike Island and was just over 8km there and back. An area I wouldn’t have visited if it hadn’t been for a Stone Roses gig but really glad I did and is a real go to place now.
