Georgia is a US state located in the southeastern United States. Georgia was established in 1732, the last of the original thirteen colonies. The state was named after King George II of Great Britain, and was the fourth state to ratify the United States Constitution on January 2, 1788. It was withdrawn from the Union on January 21, 1861, and was one of the original seven Confederate states. Georgia was the last state to be reintroduced into the Union on July 15, 1870.

The central high plateau (piedmont) extends from the foot to the fall line, where the rivers descend to the height of the continental coastal plain in the southern part of the state. The highest point in Georgia is Brasstown Bald at 1,458 m, the lowest is at the sea level.
Georgia ranks 24th among the 50 states of the United States. Georgia is by far the largest state east of the Mississippi River, although it is the fourth largest (after Michigan, Florida and Wisconsin) on the total surface, a term that includes the plains of water that form part of the state's territory.
