Ohio State Route 823
State Route 823 (SR 823), officially known as the *Southern Ohio Veterans Memorial Highway* and colloquially as the Portsmouth Bypass, is a north–south four-lane divided controlled-access highway in Scioto County, Ohio. The highway, which runs from Sciotodale to Lucasville, reroutes through traffic around the cities of Portsmouth and New Boston to the east. The bypass provides better mobility within the local area for residents and has the potential to increase the economic development of the local area. In September 2013, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) recommended a public–private partnership (P3) to fund and build the highway. Construction began in June 2015. The highway was dedicated on December 13, 2018 with vehicle traffic beginning the next day.
The 16-mile-long (26 km) freeway bypasses the cities of Portsmouth and New Boston by connecting US 52 east of New Boston and west of Wheelersburg to US 23 north of Lucasville. SR 823 begins at a partial interchange with US 52 and heads north, passing through the communities of Minford, Lucasville, and Sciotodale before ending at a trumpet interchange with US 23. The freeway has three interchanges with local roads: SR 140 near the Portsmouth city limit, CR 234 (Shumway Hollow Road) adjacent to the Greater Portsmouth Regional Airport just south of Minford, and at CR 28 (Lucasville-Minford Road) in Minford.
The proposal for a bypass began in the 1962 which called for the construction of a 8 mi (13 km) bypass designated as Ohio State Route 423 running north from Rosemount to east of Sciotoville. An engineering contract was awarded in the waning days of Governor Michael DiSalle's administration in 1963 which called for the construction of a 14.41 mi (23.19 km) bypass at a cost of $19.1 million. This was promptly terminated in the same year when Jim Rhodes assumed the governorship with the engineering firm citing that the bypass would not be under construction within two to three years. The proposed bypass was referred to as a part of Corridor B following the establishment of the Appalachian Development Highway System. The project languished for years as the bypass was plagued with problems with the state prioritizing the construction of Corridor D. It wasn't until 1998 that a $5 million environmental study was earmarked from federal transportation dollars. After three proposed routes, the hill alignment was chosen after ODOT conducted numerous studies concerning impact to the environment and local area.
The bypass was constructed in three general phases. Phase 1 connects Lucasville-Minford Road near Rases Mountain Drive to Airport Road (a newly relocated Shumway Hollow Road) adjacent to the Greater Portsmouth Regional Airport on SR 335—this phase was scheduled to take approximately three years to complete. In conjunction with the freeway construction, the 0.23-mile-long (0.37 km) section of relocated Shumway Hollow Road came under state maintenance as unsigned SR 823A. Phase 2 continues the freeway from the Lucasville-Minford Road interchange to US 23 just north of Lucasville. Phase 3 continues the freeway from the Shumway Hollow Road/Airport Road interchange in Minford to US 52 near Wheelersburg. The freeway did not open for traffic on completed sections but rather upon completion of the entire project in December 2018. The construction cost was initially projected to be $429 million in June 2015, had a total construction cost of $634 million when completed in December 2018. The state's share will be $1.2 billion over a 35-year period to construct and maintain the highway while servicing its debt
Maumee State Park, Oregon, Ohio Christmas 2021 party
#maumeebaystatepark
We joined other fellow campers for the 2021 Christmas party. We were unable to camp so we came when we could and joined them. We were able to stay in Maumee Bay State Park lodge which is absolutely beautiful. Toledo which is the closest town is an industrial town. Duane speaks about it and is interesting.
Several of us who remember M.A.S.H. went to Tony's Packos, whom the character Klinger, Jamie Farr mentioned quite frequently in the series. Many celebrities have visited the restaurant and wrote their names on hotdog buns in which they have encased. Literally several hundred. We picked a few to show.
Maumee Bay State Park has a great campground and is beautiful. There is much to do, hiking along with bike trails that we saw. It is worth camping. We will be back.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to all of you. Thanks for watching!!

From Wikipedia:
Ironton is a city in and the county seat of Lawrence County, Ohio, United States. Located in southernmost Ohio along the Ohio River 20 miles (32 km) northwest of Huntington, West Virginia, the city includes the Downtown Ironton Historic District.
The population was 11,129 at the 2010 census. Ironton is part of the Huntington-Ashland, WV-KY-OH, Metropolitan Statistical Area (MSA). As of the 2010 census, the MSA had a population of 287,702. New definitions from February 28, 2013, placed the population at 363,000.
Ironton is a contraction of iron town. The city has a long history with the iron industry. It also had one of the first professional football teams.
Ironton had one of the first professional football teams in the United States, called the Ironton Tanks. The team was organized in 1919 and played through 1930. The football field previously used by the Tanks is now home to the Ironton High School Football team, the Ironton Fighting Tigers.
The Tanks began what is now the National Football League's Thanksgiving Day Game tradition of the Detroit Lions. The Tanks played a game in 1920 the day after Thanksgiving with the Lombards, a crosstown rival, winning 26–0. In 1922, they played and defeated the Huntington Boosters 12–0 on Thanksgiving Day, Nov 30. The Tanks continued playing on this national holiday each year thru 1930, which was the Tanks final season. Several Tank players (including Glenn Presnell) continued their football careers by joining the nearby Portsmouth Spartans, who continued the annual tradition until their demise after the 1933 season.
The Spartans' assets were acquired by businessman G.A. Richards and moved to Detroit, where they were renamed the Lions. Asked by Richards about ways to improve ticket sales, the players replied that they always got a good turnout on Thanksgiving Day. He promptly scheduled the first Thanksgiving Day game in Detroit.

From Wikipedia:
The Ironton–Russell Bridge is two bridges that carry and have carried traffic along the Ohio River between Ironton, Ohio and Russell, Kentucky in the United States. The original light-blue cantilever Ironton-Russell Bridge, opened in 1922 and closed in 2016, carried two lanes of traffic and a narrow sidewalk. The new white cable-stayed bridge, which has two lanes of traffic without a dedicated sidewalk and officially named the Oakley C. Collins Memorial Bridge, opened on November 23, 2016.
In 2000, the Ohio Department of Transportation (ODOT) released a report recommending the replacement of the then 78-year-old original span. The bridge was retrofitted in the 1970s with strengthening beams and plates. Later inspection of the bridge revealed that these plates had been welded to the bridge using techniques that violated the bridge welding codes and reduced the fatigue strength of primary load members. As a result of these findings, ODOT added reinforcements to some vertical members to improve structural redundancy.
The original span was still forced to close when temperatures approach -5 degrees Fahrenheit due to the brittle nature of the steel used. Continuous monitoring was routine during temperatures below freezing to check for any cracking in the substructure of the span. In addition, in May 2008, ODOT placed a width restriction on the bridge, banning all vehicles wider than 7 ft. 6 in. Emergency vehicles, non-commercial vehicles and non-profit buses (such as school buses) were exempt from the restriction. ODOT authorized both Ohio and Kentucky law enforcement agencies to enforce the restriction.
One of the replacements considered was a three-lane single-tower cable suspension bridge. The final design was chosen in January 2003, however, the high costs of constructing the bridge became apparent when costs for the new bridge came in at $110 million, well over the original estimated cost. The sharp rise was attributed to the dramatic increase in construction costs partially blamed on Hurricane Katrina, which increased the cost of concrete materials and items derived from petroleum products. The bridge was redesigned as a two tower cable-stayed bridge, was reduced from three lanes to two and does not have a dedicated pedestrian walkway. Construction on the replacement span began in March 2012. Unlike the original bridge, which connects downtown Ironton with downtown Russell, the new bridge connects downtown Ironton directly with U.S. 23 and KY 244 within the city limits of Russell just south of downtown. The new bridge opened on November 23, 2016 with a ceremony and parade through Ironton and Russell that included crossing both the new and original structures. As part of the ceremony, the new bridge was officially named for the late Oakley C. Collins, who represented Lawrence County in both the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate. The original bridge remained open during construction and was permanently closed at the completion of the dedication ceremony and parade. Demolition of the original structure began in December 2016 and was completed in June 2017.
