Top 10 PRETTIEST Towns in OXFORDSHIRE

What are the 10 prettiest towns in the county of Oxfordshire? To determine this, I visited them all. Here's what I found out.

As a disclaimer, this list is neither a social commentary, nor a guide on which are the nicest towns to live, but purely a judgement on the aesthetics of each respective town centre.

All footage is my own, and originates from my flagship channel, 4K Explorer, which you can check out here: --

I Snuck into Britain's Most SACRED SITE

Blick Mead is, according to our best experts, the genesis of the Stonehenge ritual landscape. I emailed the old folks home at Amesbury Abbey, politely asking to visit the site but they never got back to me. So after a nice Italian dinner and a bottle of wine, I suddenly had the courage to go and see Blick Mead for myself.

NORTH AND SOUTH WHEATLEY: Bassetlaw Parish #18 of 66

Bassetlaw has been a district that's been a part of my life for a long time. I attended school in Gainsborough, which is in the Lincolnshire district of West Lindsey, but situated right on the Bassetlaw border - The River Trent. Because of that fact, a lot of my school friends came from the
district, and as such, the closer I get to Gainsborough on this mad mission of mine, the more familiar I am with the villages in question. Today's parish is certainly one of the ones that I know very well.

On a ridge of land that dips down down a hill and you drive through it, you'll find two small villages that are now amalgamated as one singular parish after joining forces in 2014 from the original two parishes they once were, and together with Norton and Cuckney, these two reduced Bassetlaw from 68 parishes to 66. The joint council makes a lot of sense. For starters, the two villages are clearly separated by the beck that runs through the middle of them, but you can walk over it quite easily in many places - it's not like it's a major river.

The two villages have always been linked throughout history anyway. Both of them relied on each other for labourers when it came to the Hiring Fair - an annual event that took place on the village green to make sure farmers in this part of the world had enough labour to tend to the land over the winter.

There used to be two churches here, only one now remains active, because the other one is now in ruins, but is certainly an attraction now that it's been restored and turned into a Scheduled Ancient Monument. It even features on one of the village signs! There are plenty of old buildings in and around the parish here - take the Old Hall with it's Cartwright family crest, the Wesleyan Chapel, and the old bakehouse on Top Street.

This one was always going to end in the cemetery, for reasons that will become apparent. This is the beautiful parish of NORTH AND SOUTH WHEATLEY.

My name is Andy. I am armed with a car, a GoPro and an unhealthy amount of time on my hands.

Join me as I try to visit every single parish in the district of Bassetlaw. There are 66. Here's the EIGHTEENTH one - North and South Wheatley.

10 Most Miserable Towns in the UK

What are the most miserable towns in the United Kingdom? Many of the towns in the United Kingdom are not doing too badly in terms of basic amenities. The quality of life in those towns is higher even than in places recognized as cities in other countries. Still, it can’t be said that all those towns are having it equally. Assessing the standard of living and quality of life in the UK as a whole, we can describe certain towns in the United Kingdom as miserable. Granted, those towns are not inherently terrible. Yet, the situation there is not acceptable in the light of what we see in other villages, towns, and cities, in the UK. In this video, we shall be discussing the 10 most miserable towns in the UK.
10. Cumbernauld, Scotland
We will start our discussion with a town in Scotland. To give you a hint; this is the first of the three Scottish towns on this list of the 10 most miserable towns in the UK. We are talking about Cumbernauld, a large town in North Lanarkshire with an area of 8.3 square miles or 21.5 square kilometers. Under normal circumstances, it should be a city because of its city-like huge population of 51,000.
It has not shed that horrible description as “Scotland’s most dismal town.” Truly speaking, this town is lacking in anything of the good things you would find in Glasgow or Edinburgh. The center of Cumbernauld has been described as the “Kabul of the North.” This says it all. Whatever you know about Kabul has its miniature in this miserable town.
9. Grimsby, England
The first of the 5 cities in England on this list is Grimsby. Maybe we should stop calling it Great Grimsby. If it were great indeed, this port town and the North East Lincolnshire administrative center on the south bank of the Humber Estuary would have all amenities that would make it rank among the best. But the comments from its residents and one-time visitors indicated that life is miserable in this place that has been voted several times as one of the worst places to live in England.
Therefore, the town of around 100,000 residents is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. Its entire area of 88 square miles (or 230 square kilometers) has been ranked the 18th worst place to live a while ago.
8. Airdrie, Scotland
Back in Scotland; we are now examining Airdrie, a town in North Lanarkshire. It also is one of the most miserable towns in the UK. The town on a plateau with an elevation of 400 feet or 130 meters above sea level is about 12 miles (or 19 kilometers) east of Glasgow city center. During its industrial heyday in the 19th century, coal mining and cotton milling were the major industries, no one could then think of this former industrial town as miserable.
However, the exit of those industries has made life there miserable to extent of being branded the most dismal town in the UK. The PR manager for the town admits it deserves its grim reputation as the worst in Scotland. The town is boring and the buildings are ugly.

Halnaker Windmill: The Fascinating History and Hidden Wonders.

Halnaker Windmill is a grade II listed tower mill located in the village of Halnaker, near Chichester, West Sussex, England. The windmill dates back to the early 18th century and was used for grinding corn until the late 19th century.

During World War II, the windmill was used as an observation post for enemy aircraft by the Royal Observer Corps. In 1954, the mill was acquired by Sussex Archaeological Society and restored to working order. Today, visitors can explore the interior of the windmill and learn about the history of milling.

One interesting fact about Halnaker Windmill is that it is believed to have been the inspiration for the children's novel The Amazing Mr. Blunden by Antonia Barber. The book features a haunted windmill that closely resembles Halnaker Windmill.

Another interesting fact is that the windmill is said to be haunted by the ghost of a miller who died in the early 20th century. Visitors have reported strange occurrences such as doors opening and closing on their own, unexplained footsteps, and the sound of grinding millstones.

In recent years, the windmill has become a popular spot for photography enthusiasts and hikers. The surrounding countryside offers beautiful views of the South Downs and the nearby Goodwood Estate.

England: Stonehenge and Avebury (two very different neolithic sites)

See more details on the blog:
Ilfracombe is wonderful but we've decided to take a little road trip to see a couple of primary tourist sites: Bath and Stonehenge. The first day we visited Stonehenge and Avebury, two very different neolithic sites. While stonehenge has a finished look where the stone age builders created something almost recognizable there is a comprehensive visitor and tourist center and facilities. You also are kept a certain distance from the stones and it costs a pretty penny.
Avebury on the other hand is free to walk around and touch. It is far larger (the stone rings at least) and less defined. It's also cuts through a town and road runs through it. Both are very impressive but we'd recommend doing a little studying before visiting to get the most from your visit. Where did the stones for stonehenge and avebury come from? You'll have to see it to find out!

AMERICAN Cities Named After English Places in NORFOLK UK

AMERICAN Cities Named After ENGLISH Places in NORFOLK UK - We are from Norfolk, England, and thought it would be fascinating to find out how many places in America are named after cities, towns, and villages in our home county of NORFOLK.

Norfolk is located in the east of England, which has a rich history and is known for its beautiful landscapes, charming market towns, and picturesque coastline. It has a unique character that has been shaped by its coastal and agricultural heritage.

How many American cities can YOU think of which are named after Norfolk places? Please comment below.

We have also thought of a small Norfolk village that was named after an American state - very rare! Do you what it is?
