Places to see in ( Whaley Bridge - UK )

Whaley Bridge is a small town and civil parish in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, England, situated on the River Goyt. Whaley Bridge is approximately 16 miles (26 km) south of Manchester, 7 miles (11 km) north of Buxton, 9 miles (14 km) east of Macclesfield and 28 miles (45 km) west of Sheffield, and had a population of 6,455 at the 2011 census. This includes the village of Furness Vale, which falls within the boundaries of Whaley Bridge. Other districts of 'Whaley', as it is known locally, include Horwich End , Bridgemont , Fernilee , Stoneheads and Taxal.

The River Goyt formed the historical boundary between Derbyshire and Cheshire. The present town of Whaley Bridge was divided into smaller towns in both counties. Historical records show that in 1316 on the Cheshire side there were Taxal, Yeardsley and Whaley, the last two being combined into one district of 'Yeardsley-cum-Whaley'. The Derbyshire side consisted only of Fernilee, which included the villages of Shallcross and Horwich. This side was in the parish of Hope and was part of the Forest of High Peak, while the Cheshire side was part of the Forest of Macclesfield. From 1796 Taxal and Yeardsley were effectively joined in that the Jodrell family was the main landowner in both towns, although the administration of these remained separate until 1936.

Until the late 19th century the population of the area grew slowly. For example, in the diocesan census in 1563, Taxal is recorded as having 26 households, and by the mid-18th century Taxal and Yeardsley together only reached 55 households. In 1791 land at Whaley Bridge was advertised for sale, the owner believing that its waterpower would be useful in the textile industry, but the two townships remained very small and only had a population of 853 between them by 1841. Up to this time agriculture and coalmining had been the main occupations.

The town expanded greatly in the Industrial Revolution and the population almost trebled to 2,322. Although there had been coal mines from earlier times, by 1871 cotton mills had become the dominant industry. Coal mining took place in the area from its very early days because of a large geographical fault which traverses the Whaley Bridge basin from east to west resulting in the coal outcropping in various places. Documentary evidence of 1587 indicates a well-established coal industry in the Towneshepp of Weley, known today as Whaley Bridge. Today, there is less intensive agriculture labour and no coal mining in the area.

Whaley Bridge continues to expand as new housing is built, but it retains the character of a small town. As the self-styled 'Gateway to the Goyt' it attracts tourists, mainly walkers, but it has not become dominated by the tourist industry, unlike some other local towns and villages. With a good commuter railway service to Manchester many people travel to work in the Manchester or Cheshire areas. With the introduction of ADSL broadband internet services increasingly people work from home.

The Cromford and High Peak Railway was granted Parliamentary consent in 1825. It was fully opened for passenger and goods traffic on 6 July 1831. The railway linked the wharf at the head of the Whaley Bridge Branch of the Peak Forest Canal to the Cromford Canal at Cromford Wharf. The Peak Forest Canal and basin were built in the 1790s and opened on 1 May 1800. An important Grade 2 listed building at the head of the Peak Forest Canal was the Transhipment Warehouse, built in 1801 and extended after the arrival of the railway in 1832.

New Mills to Whaley Bridge | Bridges and Beer walk

On the edge of the Peak District, not far from Buxton, lies the old industrial town of New Mills. I set off to explore what the town had to offer under the guidance of Adam. After visiting the popular sites of the Tors Riverside Park and Millennium Walkway, we headed for a walk down the Peak Forest Canal to Whaley Bridge. Expect Bridges, Beers, Bookshops and much more in this fun day out exploring local towns.
We used the train to get to and from the towns from Buxton (also easily accessible by rail from Manchester and Sheffield). A great day out to be had making the most of public transport to get around the Peak District. Locations and Map links listed below.

Bollington to Whaley Bridge | Peak District | Drive | 4K

Drive through the Peak District, Starting at Blaze Hill in Bollington and heading through Whaley Bridge.

Whaley Bridge is a town and civil parish in the High Peak district of Derbyshire, England. It is situated on the River Goyt, 16 miles (26 km) south-east of Manchester, 7 miles (11 km) north of Buxton, 9 miles (14 km) north-east of Macclesfield and 28 miles (45 km) west of Sheffield.

On 1 August 2019, part of the town was evacuated on the orders of Derbyshire Police after flooding caused damage to the dam at Toddbrook Reservoir. Parts of nearby Furness Vale and New Mills were also evacuated. The Royal Air Force and all high-volume pumping units from various fire services were drafted in, along with Chinook helicopters bringing in aggregate and providing support. The Environment Agency and Derbyshire Fire Brigade reported that the dam was at real risk of collapse, with 1,500 residents being evacuated from the town. After the first day, the water level of the dam had been reduced by half a metre, but authorities said this would need to fall several metres before it could be considered safe. By 6 August, the targeted reduction in the reservoir water level of 8 metres (26 ft) had been achieved, with the Canal & River Trust confirming it was down by 8.4 metres (28 ft)

Tideswell To Whaley Bridge Via Chapel-en-le-Frith

A walk following the steps of Bold Robin, the Butcher of Tideswell, who rided for Whaley Bridge to sell a cow hide, but was stopped on the way at Chapel-en-le-Frith by his friends the Smith, the Parson, and the Pardoner. They drank together at The Rose of Lancaster, before the Butcher, ...dazed and addled, mounted his horse and set off back home. Unlike him, we managed to reach Whaley Bridge. The video starts with an heritage trail in Tideswell.

Whaley Bridge Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Derbyshire, and around 15 miles southeast of Manchester, is the town of Whaley Bridge.

The town's name is derived from Old English 'weg lēah', meaning 'clearing by the road' - specifically a clearing in Macclesfield Forest. In 1351 the lands of Wayley and Yeardsley were granted to William Jodrell for his service as an archer in the English armies in Wales to Edward the Black Prince, son of Edward III.

In 1794 the construction of the Peak Forest Canal received Parliamentary approval. The canal opened in 1796, by which time Whaley Bridge was well established as a coal mining area. Limestone and burnt lime were shipped to Manchester and beyond.

In 1831 the Cromford and High Peak Railway opened which linked up Whaley Bridge to the village of Cromford, which was made famous for Richard Arkwright's Cromford Mill. For geological reasons, connecting these two settlements via canal was deemed impractical. The horse-drawn railway line, later replaced with steam locomotives, solved this problem. Thus, Whaley Bridge had a direct link to the textile products manufactured at the opposite end of the Peak District.

In 1857 Whaley Bridge received a direct rail link to Stockport courtesy of the Stockport, Disley and Whaley Bridge Railway. At the time, this linked up to the Cromford and High Peak Railway, which ultimately closed in 1967. Today, the station forms part of the Manchester-Buxton Line. Trains to Manchester take around 40-45 minutes, while trains to Buxton take around 20 minutes.

Poole's Cavern, Solomons Tower, Whaley Bridge from Buxton Caravan and Motorhome site

Queen at the Buxton Opera House, Poole's Cavern, Walks to Solomons Tower, Biking to Whaley Bridge. We certainly packed at lot into this weekend!

We stayed at the Buxton Caravan and Motorhome site which is a 2 mile walk from the centre of buxton through some lovely woods. It is steep in places but you can make it easier by taking a longer route. (link to route at the bottom of the page)

We started the weekend on Friday with a bang seeing Killer Queen at the Buxton Opera House, they were superb and would thoroughly recommend seeing them. It felt like the real thing, can't ask for anymore than that from a tribute band!

Saturday was a wash out, rain all day but that didn't spoil the fun going down Poole's Cavern (Named after John Poole who is said to have used the cave as a lair and a base to rob travellers in the fifteenth century) Entrance was £10.50 for an adult (2019). The tour was 45 minutes and full of interesting facts. Access is easy with only a few easy steps.

The site is just 15 mins from Solomons Temple. Rebuilt from a ruin of just a few stones few stones around 1895. This is a must do, the 360 views are wonderful.

Finally the sun comes out on the Sunday and we bike to Whaley Bridge and a bit further down the canal. Getting to the country lanes and offroad section of this bike ride is on a main road. It is part of the national cycle network, There wasn't really an alternative. The track is rough for about 20 minutes as you leave the main road but after that its smooth. Be sure to call in at the Bridge Bakehouse in Whaley bridge. The cakes are homemade and are amazing. Finally we ride back through the lovely Goyt Valley. As you reach the top of the one way system there is a stone building. turn left here to return offload on a rocky path or go straight to return via a main road.

Whaley Bridge Town Walk, English Countryside 4K

۞
All support is hugely appreciated and it helps me keep the channel going!

No talking, just walking. Exploring the English Countryside. A nice gentle walk around Whaley Bridge Town, Derbyshire. This Town isn't too far from my home Town of New Mills, and so is a place very familiar to me. It was a joy to capture it in peak Autumn, all the trees are so vibrantly coloured. In 2019 Whaley was in the news when the dam of the near by Toddbrook reservoir threatened to break. It effected many of my friends and family whom had to evacuate.

Whaley Bridge Memorial Park - September 2021

Tucked away between the main road in Whaley and the beautiful Toddbrook reservoir, this park is worth visiting for the lovely views alone. There is a park that is suitable for all ages with a separate toddler play area, overlooked by the bridge that crosses the reservoir dam. Near one end of the bridge, at the edge of the playing field, is a much used skateboard area.

The area around the park is worth exploring, with fantastic views across the reservoir, lots of ducks to feed and a path edging the length of the reservoir offers a good walk, but it often muddy, so be prepared! Sometimes other wildlife can be spotted, we've seen fox cubs playing in the evening sun and often see crested grebes diving there.

Most of the paths around the park are buggy and wheelchair friendly (apart from 3 small steps at the bottom of a path near the war memorial and some steps at the start of the path that goes along the side of the reservoir) but steep in a couple of places.

The park doesn't have it's own parking area or visitor facilities, but borders the town, where there are a few cafes (including 'Footsteps'), pubs, shops and also the canal basin which is also the start of more good walks, the best one being to the pub in Bugsworth!

Toddbrook sailing club and the sports centre border the park, but are separately run.

It's good place for picnics, paddling, playing walking, and feeding the ducks, especially when the sailing boats are out on the reservoir.

Open all year round, free entry, suitable for all ages.

No BL@@DY Mooring - Whaley Bridge to Bugsworth Basin

I travel to Whaley Bridge, where I was hoping to stay over for at least one night so I could go and explore the village and the surrounding area. Due to the total lack of visitor moorings there my stay was made impossible. I therefore come back up the Whaley Bridge finger, and go down the Bugsworth Basin finger to moor up. I speak my mind on this short journey.

3 Days Exploring the Peak District | Best Things to See & Do

Hey! We're back on another adventure, this time exploring the Peak District for the very first time!

The Peak District National Park is situated towards the northern part of central England. The National Park is located mostly in northern Derbyshire, although it also reaches into Cheshire, Yorkshire, Staffordshire and Greater Manchester. This makes this scenic holiday hotspot incredibly easy to access from Nottingham, Manchester, Sheffield and Derby.

Much of the landscape here is green, rugged and natural. Every twist and turn in the road leads to yet more far-reaching views across hills and dales.

We live only two and a half hours away from the Peak District and even we were amazed at how different the landscape is.

Our first activity of the trip was a circular walk up Mam Tor, followed by a quick supermarket shop and a delicious evening meal at the Cambodian restaurant, Kambuja.

The next day we took a stroll around the beautiful Ladybower Reservoir and took in the sights of Derwent Dam.

We had a very early start the next day to watch the sunrise at Winnats Pass and visited Three Shires Head waterfall for a cold water swim. In the afternoon we wrapped up the day by visiting the magnificent Thor's Cave.

On our final day we visited the picturesque town of Bakewell to try some delicious Bakewell tart and indulge in a spot of afternoon tea.

📷 To keep up to date with our most recent travels, follow us on instagram!

We find all of our walks on All trails 🏃🏽🏃🏾‍♀️

We're Shadiya and Elliot of Plants, My Wife and I and we're a married couple living on the coast of North Yorkshire.

We love exploring new places and being out amongst nature, so being able to combine those two things on our travels is our most favourite thing to do.

When travelling, we aim to see the most iconic sights whilst also getting off the beaten path to find the true beauty of a place. This means our trips often combine sight seeing with long walks!

Thanks for watching and don't forget to subscribe to see more of our adventures 🌎
