Lonelyville Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour Atlantic Ocean 🌊 beach to Great South Bay New York USA

Lonelyville Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour Atlantic Ocean 🌊 beach to Great South Bay New York USA 🇺🇸

This small town begins at the east end of Fair Harbor and is only a few blocks long. There are no commercial services here and the residents seem to like it that way. There isn’t much boardwalk here, and you get to your house on the sand. If you want a peaceful retreat, this is the town for you. Ferries are from Bay Shore and shopping is in Fair Harbor

Of the islands many pocket communities, Lonelyville is one of the oldest on Fire Island.

Founded in 1905 by the South Shore Realty Company, this secluded town is characterized by its two distinct areas.

On the Western side, many original 1930’s cottages are nestled between the narrow wooden boardwalks, shaded by the lush vegetation.

Some vestiges of the buildings existing during the fishing operations of Capt. Selah Clock in the 1880’s can still be found.

On the Eastern side, homes sprouted up during the 1960’s along the more modern cement walkways. Though different in architecture, the two sides are joined by a love of privacy, relaxation, and comfortable lifestyle.

Many who reside here are long-timers, who have had homes here for generations. They share their town happily with the intrepid renters and newcomers.

There are no stores, restaurants, bars, or any of the usual amenities found in neighboring towns.

Groceries are brought from Fair Harbor or the mainland, and carried or wagonned in.

What is sacrificed in convenience is more than made up in the serenity and beauty of this special community.

Ferry service is from Bay Shore, use Dunewood ferry

There was a time when Fire Island was connected to Jones Beach Island, a single island stretching 60 miles from Jones Beach to South Hampton. The Fire Island Inlet naturally formed in 1863, and was later expanded through manpower, once over 9 miles wide before shrinking to its current width.

1931 Fire Island separates from Southampton

A 1931 Nor’easter caused the formation of the Moriches inlet and resulting in the separation of Southampton and Fire Island. Local efforts have protected eastern Fire Island with a series of jetties that have interrupted the longshore drift of sand from east to west which is blamed for the beach erosion.

Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy (unofficially referred to as Superstorm Sandy) was the deadliest, the most destructive, and the strongest hurricane of the 2012 Atlantic hurricane season. The storm inflicted nearly $70 billion (2012 USD) in damage. Sandy was a Category 3 storm at its peak intensity when it made landfall in Cuba. While it was a Category 2 hurricane off the coast of the Northeastern United States, the storm became the largest Atlantic hurricane on record as measured by diameter, with tropical-storm-force winds spanning 1,150 miles (1,850 km).

Hurricane Sandy was referred to as “Superstore Sandy because it had lost some of the traits needed to call it a hurricane. Sandy developed as an ordinary hurricane in the Caribbean, but as it moved up the East Coast and encountered cooler air and water, it began to loose its tropical characteristics. Hurricane Sandy was no longer a hurricane when it made land fall on Fire Island which is why it is also called Superstorm Sandy. The October 2012 storm generated the highest storm tide ever recorded in New York, reaching to nearly 14 feet in height, about 9 feet of which was from storm surge.

Ocean Bay Park Fire Island NY 🔥🏖 walking tour vegetation plants along Great South Bay New York USA

Ocean Bay Park, AKA “The Park” is a popular destination for Long Islanders to come for the day and play. Fire Islanders join them to have a few beers and dance to live music at Flynn’s or Schooners. The mood here is relaxed and let it be. The town is diverse, inclusive and just a little quirky in a very nice way. Day Trippers and residents get along just fine. This is a “yes” kind of town. Ferries leave from Bay Shore.

Ocean Bay Park is a hamlet in the Town of Brookhaven, Suffolk County, New York, United States. It is located on Fire Island, a barrier island separated from the southern side of Long Island by the Great South Bay. To reach Ocean Bay Park, one must take a ferry or water taxi from Bay Shore.

Housing includes group houses and family homes. Nightlife and full-service restaurants include Flynn's (which also has a 50-boat marina) and the Schooner Inn.

Ocean Bay Park was once filled with college and recently graduated young people, but has since shifted to a more family friendly community. The community has always been home to many somewhat older affluent home owners who enjoy the laid back beauty of Fire Island with family and friends.

The residents of Ocean Bay Park have a history of being on the forefront of social change. On September 2, 1967 Dr. Martin Luther King was the guest of honor at a cocktail party held by Mr. and Mrs. Hyman Abbott as a fundraiser for his work. Earlier that day Dr. King spoke about community, the war in Vietnam, anti-Semitism and the need for a third political party. 1,500 residents attended that rally in Seaview.

Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) → How to ride, view schedule, buy tickets, board train, transfer, etc

The Long Island Rail Road (or LIRR) is a commuter rail that goes through Manhattan, Brooklyn, Queens, Nassau, and Suffolk. It's a great way to see the areas east of New York City (which is Long Island). I use it to go to Far Rockaway beach, Citifield for a Mets game, and Billie Jean King/Arthur Ashe for the US Open Tennis. But how do you take the LIRR? How do you ride the Long Island Rail Road? In this video, I'm going to cover everything you need to know about the Long Island Rail Road — from defining what it is to buying a ticket from a machine or phone, finding and boarding your train, figuring out transfers, and so much more. Enjoy and Happy New York-ing!

SAYVILLE THE FRIENDLIEST TOWN IN AMERICA

For more details:

Sayville, NY

Sayville is a sleepy town with a quaint Main St on LI's South Shore with ferries running to Fire Island. It's real estate is very diversified in style and price. There are older Victorians on tree lined streets, developments with sidewalks and older seaside cottages. The Sayville Chamber of commerce organizes many seasonal events, the summerfest every August is a favorite, Miracle on main with the tree lighting brings the whole town together. This town was once named The friendliest town in America and these are just some of the reasons why!

Indian Island is a site of spiritual significance. During a 2005 storm, the beach eroded exposing burials and artifacts. The Shinnecock and Unkechaug, in cooperation with the Riverhead Park and Town supervisors, repatriated the remains.
The area is within the Indian Island Park, used for camping.
History
In 2005, Heavy rains and high waves uncovered what might be an important early American Indian burial site at Indian Island County Park in Riverhead, N.Y. The site was discovered by a park supervisor after the Peconic River bank eroded in stormy conditions.
Archaeologists said they found bones from at least two people believed to be American Indians buried at the site during the Early Woodland period, from 800 B.C. to A.D. 800. They also said they found several artifacts, including a pipe and fragments of a bowl.
The remains were being examined by a forensic anthropologist.
“The bones were in small pieces,” David Thompson, vice president of the Suffolk County Archaeological Association, told Newsday. “They were obviously burnt. There were charred pieces of skull and small pieces of a jawbone. The fact that they were cremated is a holdover from a culture that immediately preceded the Early Woodland, which was called the Transitional Culture
Officials were uncertain what will happen to the site

Fire Island, New York

Fire Island is the Large Center Island of the outer barrier islands parallel to the south shore of Long Island, In the New York.
My video shooting on the top of Fire Island Lighthouse and to views Via The Robert Moses Causeway on its western end.
Fire Island lies on average 3.9 miles (6.2 km) off the south shore of Long Island, but nearly touches it along the east end. It is separated from Long Island by Great South Bay, which spans interconnected bays along Long Island: Patchogue Bay, Bellport Bay, Narrow Bay, and Moriches Bay. The island is accessible by automobile near each end: via Robert Moses Causeway on its western end, and by William Floyd Parkway (Suffolk County Road 46) near its eastern end. Cross-bay ferries connect to over 10 points in between. Motor vehicles are not permitted on the rest of the island, except for utility, construction and emergency access and with limited beach-driving permits in winter. The island and its resort towns are accessible by boat, seaplane and a number of ferries, which depart from Patchogue, Bay Shore and Sayville.
