NEW ZEALAND 🇳🇿 BEST KEPT SECRET! Mt Taranaki & Forgotten World Highway | 197 Countries, 3 Kids
Join us for part 2 of our tour of New Plymouth and the Republic of Whangamomona, New Zealand!
We loved the view of Mount Taranaki from our Home Exchange, but imagine living next to an active volcano. These are some brave people!
Our first stop was a little agricultural town nearby called Stratford. Back in the day, it was a practice to name newly established towns after the birthplaces of imminent British figures, so Stratford was named after William Shakespeare's hometown.
To pay even further respect to the genius British playwright, they named 67 streets after the characters from 27 of Shakespeare’s plays!
Today, Stratford is home to the only glockenspiel clock tower in New Zealand. It plays the balcony scene from Romeo and Juliet four times a day and we were lucky enough to be there at the right time to see the 5-minute show.
Leaving town, we decided to check out the Carrington Walkway. This 2-mile long loop trail around Stratford was a great way to stretch our legs and discover the surrounding area.
Next, we drove up to the Stratford Mountain House for a picnic with the best view of Mount Taranaki.
From there we continued on our tour to Hawera, the second-biggest town in the Taranaki region. We quickly noticed the Hawera Water Tower - built because they had three devastating fires.
After a quick visit, we decided to jump on the Surf Highway 45 towards New Plymouth and check out some of the nearby beaches and popular surfing spots.
The next day, we visited the Puke Ariki (Hill of Chiefs) Museum in New Plymouth which also doubles as a library.
Puke Ariki is an interactive museum, free to see and open to 5 pm. We enjoyed diving into New Zealand’s history, nature, geology, inventions, social development, and a whole lot more.
While still in the Taranaki area, we couldn’t miss visiting the Republic of Whangamomona. Yes, you read that right! Even though now it’s a tourist place, Whangamomona was founded in 1989. They celebrate the day of the republic on November 1st and even have their own passport stamp!
But to get there, we first had to go through the infamous road known as the Forgotten World Highway! The name comes from the fact that there are no gas stations, settlements, or phone signals throughout the 150 km stretch!
New Plymouth was such an adventure!
If you loved it as much as we did, drop us a comment and let us know your favorite part!

Pukerangiora Pā Historical Reserve | Aotearoa New Zealand Histories Walking Tour 4K
In this 4K walking tour we explore Pukerangiora Pā Historical Reserve. Pukerangiora Pā Historical Reserve is located in Waitara, Taranaki, high above the Waitara River. The name Pukerangiora now covers several sites and a lot of military history. It was besieged twice during the Musket Wars. The site, however, is best known for its role in the First and Second Taranaki Wars (1860-61 and 1863-66 respectively.)
During these military conflicts, the site saw the loss of many lives - with each war deserving of its own historical inquiry.
Since then cultivation has destroyed much of the site. It is now under the management of the Department of Conversation.
🔴 In this video series looking at the Aotearoa New Zealand History , we aim to present the places as they are . We understand that it is not possible to tell the many complex stories of a location with one video, rather we want to make these places available to be visited virtually.
🔴 For more information about this site, we have collected some resources which can be used to understand more context -
🚣 Kayaking in Taranaki - New Zealand's Biggest Gap Year – Backpacker Guide New Zealand
Day 43: Today we are kayaking in Taranaki! We are taking a kayak tour to Sugar Loaf Islands in New Plymouth with Canoe & Kayak and then checking out the studio at Cruize FM.
Yesterday - Day 42 -
Tomorrow – Day 44 –
About this video:
Today we are in the Taranaki city of New Plymouth and we are heading over to Canoe & Kayak Taranaki to do a kayaking trip over to the Sugar Loaf Islands.
After getting set up with all the gear, we head down to the beach and harbour in New Plymouth, have a quick lesson, then get into the water with Canoe & Kayak Taranaki.
We follow our Canoe & Kayak Taranaki guide over to the Sugar Loaf Islands from New Plymouth in Taranaki which only takes us about 30 minutes. We have views of the city and Mt Taranaki along the way.
When we reach the Sugar Loaf Islands, we see some New Zealand fur seals, as well as hear about the fascinating Maori history surrounding the Sugar Loaf Islands and the whole Taranaki area.
We play and paddle around the Sugar Loaf Islands then head back toward New Plymouth. Tonight, we are invited to record a commercial for a local Taranaki radio station, Cruise FM, for the Ducks & Drakes Backpackers.
So what do you think about kayaking in Taranaki? Is kayaking in Taranaki something you would do?

Taranaki New Zealand
Taranaki New Zealand or commonly called Taranaki Like No Other. One of the most beautiful places to visit in New Zealand where the mountain and sea are so close. Everywhere you go you get a beautiful view of Mt Taranaki.
We started our little adventure in Breakwater Bay, situated right next to Port Taranaki and at the beginning, or the end of the now famous coastal walkway that stretches from New Plymouth to the eastern end side of Bell Block Beach. A total of 13.2km. The grade is easy. The walkway is paved, with some gentle slopes. It is excellent for walking, running, cycling, skateboarding, skating and scooting. Most people would be able to walk 4 - 6km/hr on the Coastal Walkway.
Breakwater Bay was a fun place to stop with the children, playground, lots of grass area, beach and an ice cream truck, they couldn't be happier!
We didn't do the full coastal walkway but we stopped in to see the stunning Rewa Rewa Bridge that joins the New Plymouth and Bell Block part of the walkway and carries a significant meaning in respect to the Maori Pa site nearby.
For more information on this area please visit
Next we headed in to New Plymouth township to visit Puke Ariki a museum on the waterfront.
After seeing the mountain glistening away in the background we couldn't help but take a drive up there to take in the views. The ski field was closed this time of year but there was a little bit of snow for the children to play in.
After all that excitement we stopped at the playground at King Edward park in Stratford for a picnic lunch then enjoyed the beautiful Carrington Walkway which had many different aspects to explore, the children had a ball!
While we were down there the Egmont 4WD club was hosting an event so we decided to go along. Check out our next video for more 4x4 fun!
Lastly we visited Pukerangiora, a historical Maori battle site which endured 3 wars. To get to Pukerangiora continue driving 6.5km up Waitara Road. You will see the open site on the left of the battle fields and a car park area just up further. For more information please visit
We will post a more indepth video of this site soon so please subscribe to see this valuable piece of New Zealand Maori history.
Hunua Falls - The Most Beautiful Waterfall in Auckland Region (New Zealand) [Auckland Attractions]
Hunua Falls is located in the western part of Hunua Ranges Regional Park in Auckland area. The spectacular 30-metre waterfall is part of the Wairoa River which carves through an ancient volcano as it winds its way north through the township of Clevedon, before meeting the Hauraki Gulf. The waterfall is extremely popular among the locals which makes it one of New Zealand Must See Waterfalls.

Situated in the heart of New Plymouth is Pukekura Park, and it's worth a visit even when the Festival of Lights isn't on
New Plymouth (Māori: Ngāmotu) is the major city of the Taranaki Region on the west coast of the North Island of New Zealand. It is named after the English city of Plymouth from where the first English settlers to New Zealand migrated

The city of New Plymouth is known for its sunny climate, art galleries and beautiful parks. It is also New Zealand's 'oil town', with offshore rigs extracting natural gas and oil
New Plymouth Coastal Walkway : from Bell Block, Te Rewa rewa bridge, Fitzroy and the wind wand
Part 1 : Bell Block to the wind wand.
A walkway like no other.
This part of the walkway spans around 8 kms with crashing waves, and crystal ocean as far as your eye can see.
I started my walk from Bell block cycle park, and finished at the wind wand around 2 hours later.
