Rotterdam Travel Guide - Netherlands Joyful Times

Utrecht is a central Dutch city with a long history. It's hard not to fall in love with Utrecht, one of the Netherlands' oldest urban centres and for centuries its religious heart. Now a vibrant university city, the compact medieval core radiates out from the iconic 15th-century Domtoren, ringed by a loop of very pretty tree-lined canals. Their central sections have distinctive double-level sides inset with what were once medieval warehouses – many now forming fascinating venues to eat, drink, dance or sleep, with terrace-walkways that extend right to the waterside. The brilliant cafe culture goes well beyond the canals – Utrecht's vibrant concert schedules are a big draw and, if the budget stretches, it's worth luxuriating in one of numerous historic mansions that have been turned into indulgent boutique hotels.

The history of the city goes back to 47 AD when the Roman emperor Claudius ordered his general Corbulo to build a defensive line along the river Rhine which was the northern most border of the empire. One of the strongholds (or Castella) along the river was built at a crossing in the river and was called Traiectum (which means crossingplace). In the local language this became Trecht, Uut-Trecht (lower-Trecht) and later Utrecht. On the place where once the castellum stood now stands the Domchurch built in the 13th century.

Walking is the easiest way to travel in the city of Utrecht. The centre is very compact compared to the other large Dutch cities, with almost all points of interest being within walking distance to each other (the only major exception being the Rietveld-Schröder house). To use the public transportation in the Netherlands, it is recommended to buy an OV-chipcard. There is no separate OV-chipkaart for tourists. As a tourist you will purchase an anonymous OV-chipkaart or a disposable OV-chipkaart. You will purchase either card at the counter for a public transport company, the device at the station, at a newsagent or at a supermarket. The OV chipcard is valid for bus, train and tram and works like a debit card that you must first charge with an amount.

The city of Utrecht is subdivided into 10 city quarters, all of which have their own neighbourhood council and service centre for civil affairs.

Utrecht's cityscape is dominated by the Dom Tower, the tallest belfry in the Netherlands and originally part of the Cathedral of Saint Martin. An ongoing debate is over whether any building in or near the centre of town should surpass the Dom Tower in height (112 m (367 ft)). Nevertheless, some tall buildings are now being constructed that will become part of the skyline of Utrecht.

Another landmark is the old centre and the canal structure in the inner city. The Oudegracht is a curved canal, partly following the ancient main branch of the Rhine. It is lined with the unique wharf-basement structures that create a two-level street along the canals. Due to the past importance of Utrecht as a religious centre, several monumental churches were erected, many of which have survived. Most prominent is the Dom Church. Other notable churches include the romanesque St Peter's and St John's churches; the gothic churches of St James and St Nicholas; and the Buurkerk, now converted into a museum for automatically playing musical instruments.

Utrecht's Centraal Museum focuses on local art, fashion and history. Mechanical musical instruments are on show at the Speelklok. TivoliVredenburg is a modern music venue with 5 separate auditoriums. The 1924 Rietveld Schroder House exhibits the De Stijl movement's trademark primary colors and asymmetrical, blocky forms. The split-level promenade beside the Oudegracht canal has cafes and shops within former wharf buildings. Canal tours can be made by bicycle, kayak or motor boat. Just outside town, Kasteel de Haar is a fairy-tale castle in a landscaped park.

Castles & Estates | Recommended E25 | Welcome to The Netherlands

Don’t feel like travelling abroad? How about travelling in time!
The Netherlands has a huge array of castles, dotted around the country. We have listed five of our favourites for you to pay a visit.

Located only five kilometers from the beach, and surrounded by a thick forest, Kasteel de Wittenburg is a tranquil haven near the bustling city of The Hague. You are able to stay in their luxury chambers, that will make you feel like a king of past times.

Landgoed Rhederoord is the best kept secret of National Park “De Hoge Veluwe”. They offer genuine hospitality, like you would expect from a authentic estate. To top it all off, you will be able to experience fine dining with local, high quality dishes.

Castle Oud-Poelgeest is over 700 years old, and a stone’s throw away from the city of Leiden.
Previous occupants shaped the castle’s identity bit by bit, like professor Boerhaave. He planted peculiar trees and crops around the property. The rich history of the castle make it such a special place to visit.

StayOkay Domburg is a hostel in a rather unique place. This beautiful castle-hostel is located right next to the dunes and a 5-minute walk away from the beach. From the hostel, you can make beautiful cycle or hiking trips along the coast of Zeeland.

Estate Groot Warnsborn is the ideal place to have a luxurious stay and a culinary dinner.
Or have a hike in the forest. The estate is located 5 minutes from the centre of Arnhem, but you can still get lost in the 750 hectare of natural beauty.

4K Utrecht ,The Netherlands, city Walk 2023

Utrecht is the fourth-largest city of the Netherlands, as well as the capital and the most populous city of the province of Utrecht. The municipality of Utrecht is located in the eastern part of the Randstad conurbation, in the very centre of mainland Netherlands, and includes Haarzuilens, Vleuten en De Meern. It has a population of 361,699 as of December 2021.

Utrecht's ancient city centre features many buildings and structures, several dating as far back as the High Middle Ages. It has been the religious centre of the Netherlands since the 8th century. In 1579, the Union of Utrecht was signed in the city to lay the foundations for the Dutch Republic. Utrecht was the most important city in the Netherlands until the Dutch Golden Age, when it was surpassed by Amsterdam as the country's cultural centre and most populous city.

Utrecht is home to Utrecht University, the largest university in the Netherlands, as well as several other institutions of higher education. Due to its central position within the country, it is an important hub for both rail and road transport; it has the busiest train station in the Netherlands, Utrecht Centraal. It has the second-highest number of cultural events in the Netherlands, after Amsterdam. In 2012, Lonely Planet included Utrecht in the top 10 of the world's unsung places.

Fairytale Castle De Haar - The Netherlands

Castle De Haar is a must-see destination for tourists visiting The Netherlands. In Dutch it is Kasteel De Haar of Kasteel Haarzuilen. The castle is near the city of Utrecht. It is about 10 kilometers west of Utrecht city, and 30 kilometers from Amsterdam.

One of the main reasons to visit Castle De Haar is its stunning architecture. The castle is a beautiful example of neo-gothic style and has been meticulously restored to its former glory. It burned down in 1482 and was rebuild in 1892. Visitors can explore the castle's many rooms and admire the intricate details and decor. It is the location of festivals and fairs. One of which is Elf Fantasy Fair or Elfia: a fantasy-themed cosplay festival.

Another reason to visit Castle De Haar is its rich history. The castle has a fascinating past, dating back to the 14th century, and visitors can learn about the castle's previous inhabitants and the events that took place there.

The castle's gardens are also a highlight and are a must-see for visitors. The gardens are beautifully landscaped and feature a variety of plants and flowers. The gardens are also home to many statues and sculptures, adding to the castle's charm.

Finally, Castle De Haar offers a unique experience that can't be found anywhere else. It's a perfect blend of history, architecture, and nature that makes it an ideal destination for tourists. It is a perfect day trip from Utrecht or Amsterdam.

DE HAAR CASTLE IN UTRECHT ???????? | THE LARGEST CASTLE IN THE NETHERLANDS

Castle De Haar may look Medieval, but was actually built in the early twentieth century. The famous Dutch architect Pierre Cuypers built it between 1892 and 1912 on the ruins of the old, derelict castle that stood there, on commission from Baron Etienne van Zuylen van Nijevelt. In the 60s, it became a place where the Van Zuylen van Nijevelt family received the international jet set, from Brigitte Bardot and Coco Chanel to Maria Callas and Roger Moore. A visit to Castle De Haar feels like a trip back in time to the glory days of the twentieth century.
