Finland is renowned for its fishing culture, with locals embracing this activity year-round. Whether it's winter ice fishing or summer lake fishing, Finns enjoy the thrill of casting their lines in pursuit of various species, including pike, perch, and salmon. The habit of fishing is deeply embedded in Finnish traditions, serving as a cherished pastime for families and friends. The camaraderie found during fishing trips, whether from a boat or along the shore, adds to the joy of these outdoor adventures.

The Finnish government has made substantial efforts to conserve the country's natural resources, ensuring that areas like Iso-Kairi remain pristine and accessible to everyone. This dedication to environmental preservation allows both residents and visitors to experience the unspoiled wilderness Finland is famous for. One remarkable aspect of life in Finland is the effortless access to nature-whether you live in a bustling city or a small village, you're always close to a peaceful lake, the sea, or a forest. These natural spaces not only provide fresh air but also serve as a perfect retreat for relaxation and reflection.

During our day at Iso-Kairi, we reveled in the best that nature has to offer. We kicked off our adventure with some fishing and were lucky enough to catch several Ahven (perch), which are plentiful in these waters. The highlight, however, was landing two impressive Hauki (pike), a predatory fish that is highly sought after by local anglers. Fishing for pike is especially thrilling due to their active feeding times, making the experience both challenging and exhilarating.

As the sun began to set, we set up camp and gathered around a cozy campfire by the lake, surrounded by the gentle whispers of the forest. Cooking our freshly caught fish over an open flame, under the expansive Finnish sky, created an unforgettable moment that truly epitomizes the Finnish way of life.

Join us on this episode of Walk With Me Finland as we discover the natural beauty and serenity of Iso-Kairi in Vihti. Helsinki Travel Guide - Finland Magical Moments

Helsinki Travel Guide - Finland Magical Moments

Helsinki (Finnish) or Helsingfors (Swedish) is the capital of Finland. Founded in 1550, the Daughter of the Baltic has been the Finnish capital since 1812, when it was rebuilt by the tsars of Russia along the lines of a miniature St. Petersburg, a role it has played in many Cold War movies. Today, Helsinki pulls off the trick of being something of an international metropolis while still retaining a small-town feel. The best time to visit is in summer, when Finns peel off their overcoats and flock to outdoor bars and cafes to enjoy the sunshine.

Helsinki was founded in A.D. 1550 by King Gustav Vasa of Sweden as a trading post to compete with Tallinn to the south in Estonia, which was Danish at that time. Its growth was slow until the establishment of Sveaborg (nowadays Suomenlinna) Maritime Fortress in the front of Helsinki in the middle of 18th century.

The county of Helsinki forms the core of Finland's largest urban area, known in Finnish as the capital area (pääkaupunkiseutu). Helsinki is bordered by the Gulf of Finland to the south, while the suburban municipality Espoo, with the embedded tiny enclave town of Kauniainen, is to the west. The more industrialized municipality of Vantaa is to the north and east. Beyond these three the suburbs rapidly give way to small towns, farms and forests, most notably Nuuksio National Park at the intersection of Espoo, Vihti and Kirkkonummi.

Within Helsinki itself, the city center is on the southern peninsula at the end of the city's main thoroughfare Mannerheimintie (or just Mansku). Both the central railway station and the main bus terminal are in the city center. Shopping streets Aleksanterinkatu (or Aleksi for short) and Esplanadi (or Espa) connect to Senate Square (Senaatintori), the historical center of the city.

Helsinki has a humid continental climate, with significant moderation from the sea and it's the coldest major city in Scandinavia and one of the coldest cities in Europe. Winters are damp, snowy and cold and temperatures usually stay below freezing and temperatures can fall down to -7°C (18°F) in February (the coldest month).

Central Helsinki is rather compact and can be explored on foot by energetic visitors. A combination of walking and public transportation might be most convenient to cover the sights in Helsinki. A metro line runs from the Matinkylä suburb in Espoo in the west, through the city center, and then to the eastern suburbs. Apart from the metro stops at the shopping centers of Iso Omena (Matinkylä), Ainoa (Tapiola) and Itis (Itäkeskus), the Rastila camping site and Aurinkolahti Beach, few places along the line are of interest to tourists. After Itäkeskus in the east, the line splits in two, with one line going to Mellunmäki and the other to Vuosaari. From the city center, the travel time to the ends of each of the lines is about 20 minutes.

Surrounded by sea and a vast archipelago, Helsinki is at its best in the summer when the dialogue between the city and nature is at its fullest. Classical Helsinki's sights can be divided into an eclectic set of churches and a wide variety of museums. For a coastal amble past some of Helsinki's minor and major sights, see the itinerary A seaside stroll in Helsinki.

Baltic Tour 2021 - Finland

Across Finland from Helsinki to Turku.

Tallinn to Helsinki Ferry, Gulf of Finland, Port of Helsinki, Helsinki, Espoo, Vihti, Myllylammen uimaranta, Nummela, Lohja, Salo, Kaarina, Turku, Ferry to Stockholm

Finland - land of lakes and islands, land of endless space - is ideal for cyclists. The sparsely populated country in the far north is relatively flat and is covered with numerous beautiful and varied cycling routes of all levels of difficulty. Families and beginners can get around easily and discover the wonderful nature and cultural highlights. Adventurous cyclists head out into the wilderness and shoot across the nature trails on their mountain bikes.

Cycling routes in Finland lead over separate cycle paths, shared paths and sections on roads with little traffic. Along the routes, there are usually some services such as supermarkets, restaurants and accommodations. In the more remote areas, however, services are more limited.

The Finnish Lake District and the Archipelago are particularly suitable for cyclists. Riding close to the water is simply beautiful. From lake to lake and from island to island you can discover so many new things every day.

Finland is a relatively flat country, which makes tour biking an ideal activity for families and enthusiastic cyclists alike. Tour biking is a relaxed activity that allows you to experience some of Finland’s most spectacular natural areas and other attractions on two wheels.

Helsinki, the sustainable capital of Finland, is a vibrant seaside city of beautiful islands and great green urban areas. Helsinki marches to a wonderful and unique beat of its own with dynamic food, design, architecture – and sauna! – scenes. Helsinki and its Nordic culture are made by the locals.

Helsinki is the largest city in Finland and the metropolitan area is the home of 1.4 million people. When you look at a map, Helsinki is in the northernmost corner of the Europe but it is an easy hub to reach with fast flight connections from East to West. No flight? No problem. Helsinki can be reached from St. Petersburg, Estonia and Sweden via the Baltic Sea. In fact, the sea is one of the most characterizing elements of the city. The Helsinki Archipelago consists of over 300 mesmerizing islands.

The rhythm of Helsinki is laid-back and the city is easily approachable, literally. The public transportation system is one of the best in the world – with that one beautiful metro line – and it is also easy to walk and bike everywhere.

Turku has a long history as Finland's largest city and occasionally as the administrative center of the country, but for the last two hundred years has been surpassed by Helsinki. The city's identity stems from its status as the oldest city in Finland and the country's first capital.

The City of Turku came into existence at Koroinen, a few kilometres from the Turku market square. Trading took place on this historic site as early as in the 1150's, and in 1229, the bishopric was transferred there as well. The year 1229 is also regarded as the year in which the City of Turku was founded.

Do you know how to recognise a European city dating from the Middle Ages? A riverfront, market square, castle and cathedral, just to name a few. Sounds familiar – in fact, it sounds just like Turku. Turku is not only the one city in Finland that meets the above description, it is also a destination filled with events and things to do, not to mention the European Capital of Culture.
