The fog and mist appear to perpetually hug the now-sleepy coastal town of La Serena and nearby coasts in a freakish microclimate that helps make the Atacama desert the driest and oldest in the world. This year has been unusually dry with a little publicised El Niño. Travel 40km or 50km inland (almost the width of the entire country: 97km at it's thinnest and 200km wide on average), and the opposite is true with over 320 cloudless nights per year. This, coupled with the arid conditions make this region of Chile a goldmine for Astronomers (and en ex-goldmine for the Conquistiadors). As the US, EU and many others have their telescopes on Chilean soil, Chilean students and Astronomers are granted 10% of the time in each observatory absolutely free in these incredibly complex and fantastically expensive machines.
Today I decided to leave a perfectly comfortable and pleasant hostel and ended up in something that's almost certainly worse, but I'm in search of like-minded travellers, something that La Serena seems to be lacking in abundance currently. Actually a few people have said this about the whole of Chile at present; it should be busier than this even if it is after the busy summer season. My only conclusion is that the Earthquake is still needlessly driving tourists away, something that a Brit I met the other day agrees with. Without intended to offend my German friends, I was getting sick of seeing Germans everywhere - the hostel was over-run. Residencia Suissa here, Hotel Berlin there, our hostel was owned and operated by 2 krauts - the whole town seems to be running with an undercurrent of the snitzelwörst eating, sun-lounger-stealing Deutschlanders. Well, we'll see if anyone else turns up to this hostel instead - it's looking a little deserted; I tried a few others and same story - where is everybody? I'm not just the only person in my 12-person dorm, but the only one in the hostel.
It's my third night out of 5 here and am running out of things to do already. Did the main activities of the Elqui Valley yesterday, including a trip to Vicuña, Pisco Elqui, lunch in the solar restaurant (using only solar energy to cook with), a couple of Pisco breweries, and a trip up the mountain to spend the night at an observatory. Having a couple of Universities here, there's a lot of young and vibrant kids around, and managed to find a couple of cool indie bars the other night, but it's only so much fun drinking alone and not being able to interact. Guess I should try to become fluent in Spanish.
The observatory was good, but the skies were overpowered by the full moon and it's easier to spot the Milky Way around June-July time when night is looking into the galaxy and not out through the edge. We were shown a couple of nebulae, Saturn, and almost blinded by the moon. I also now know how to locate South at night in the Southern hemisphere so can now act as a compass wherever I go in the world.
Vicuña was a quaint but relatively nondescript town except for an interesting red clock tower in the main square donated by the Mayor of the German town Ulm (see?! - they're everywhere!!), and serves only as a jump off point to see the main source of the Elqui Valley. Jumped on a tour to nearby Pisco Elqui. Apparently, there are only 2 Pisco-making regions, here and one up in Peru. The town was sneakily renamed Pisco Elqui only about 50 years ago to stake a claim on the name 'Pisco' to prevent other manufacturers from calling their wares 'Pisco'.
Walked down to a deserted beach today, had lunch, slept it off, got burnt and decided to spend the evening updating the blog, listening to the iPod and reading my book in the square in La Serena before heading for dinner and bed. Hardly spoken to a soul today, but not long to wait before I meet up with the rest of the tour on Saturday. Tomorrow will be dead as it's Good Friday - might see if they've got any processions or anything happening. A local sat down on the park bench next ...

El valle del Elqui, llamado antiguamente también como valle de Coquimbo, es el espacio cultural desarrollado en la cuenca del río Elqui ubicada en la provincia de Elqui, región de Coquimbo, en Chile. El principal río de esta cuenca es el Elqui, que nace de la confluencia de los ríos río Claro (Elqui) y río Turbio (Elqui), provenientes ambos de la cordillera de los Andes, y desemboca en el océano Pacífico en la ciudad de La Serena.
En este valle se encuentra ubicado uno de los tantos embalses que posee la región, el embalse Puclaro, que se encuentra a 432 m s. n. m. en un sector conocido como Angostura Puclaro y que tiene una capacidad de 200 millones de m³ de agua y 760 ha.
