4 Romani in Siberia ep.2

Am continuat drumul spre Magadan, unde am marcat punctul la masca durerii monumentul celor decedati in gulag. ne-am continuat cautarea gulagului in episodul urmator .

In the second episode we debute with an umpleasant incident that got us late with 9 days of intense body work and 10 days more on the road to our guest Maxim from Krasnoyarsk. After that we continued the road to BAM, getting some transmission mechanics on the road. The offroad siutation put us on a limit with a lot of near death crossings over Vitim bridge and many other tense situations. We are still considering that one of the intense crossings was the Kuanda bridge, disbanded in 1980, the only way to cross the river was a guarded feroviar bridge. The guard was a Moldovean, who tried to run from Moldova 35 years ago but he was caught by URSS and obliged to work in mine and after the fall of URSS he started guarding the bridge for a living. after that, we stopped in Yakutsk where we started some needed mechanics because the bones road was up next on the road to Tomtor where we visited the cold record monument still keeping the -71,2 degrees record . The next city was Uts Nera, a mining city being the northest point of the expedition after that we continued to Magadan where we thicked on the list the mask of sorrow , in memoriam to people killed in gulag. We contined in the next episode the gulag exploration.

With an extreme subarctic climate (Köppen climate classification Dfd/Dwd), Oymyakon is known as one of the places considered the Northern Pole of Cold, the other being the town of Verkhoyansk, located 629 km (391 mi) away by air. The ground is permanently frozen (continuous permafrost).

There is a monument built around the town square commemorating a reading in January 1924 of −71.2 °C (−96.2 °F). This was shown on the Australian program 60 Minutes in a 2012 documentary.[10] On February 6, 1933, a temperature of −67.7 °C (−89.9 °F) was recorded at Oymyakon's weather station.[11][12] This was the coldest officially recorded temperature in the Northern Hemisphere. Only Antarctica has recorded lower official temperatures (the lowest being −89.2 °C (−128.6 °F), recorded at Vostok Station on 21 July 1983).

HOW FAR EAST CAN YOU GET TO BY HITCHHIKING | 2032KM From Yakutsk to Magadan (Road of Bones)

I was always wondering what is the easternmost city you can get to by road on the Eurasian continent, and it turns out to be Magadan. I took my backpack and left my apartment in Yakutsk to see what is at the end of this road.
Pierre wasn't here for this trip because he had to work, but he did some other cool stuff.

IMPORTANT- TO REACH OMYAKON, THERE'S A ROAD FROM KYUBEME, WHICH IS PORTRAYED WRONG ON GOOGLE MAPS!

The nickname “the road of bones” speaks of the painful events associated with the construction of the highway. The road was constructed from the 1930s to the 1950s. Political prisoners of the Stalin regime of the Soviet Union were forced to build the road using hand tools.

This vlog features my Yakutsk To Omyakon Hitchhiking Trip, which happens to be the coldest city in the world, Yakutsk, -64.4°c to the World's Coldest Inhabited Place, Omyakon -71°C.

Road trip 2021: Magadan – Yakutsk – Moscow. How to survive at the Oymyakon Pole of Cold

How did we get the idea for a road trip from Magadan to Yakutsk to Moscow?
(Chinese and Spanish subs are available)

The route is over 12,000 km (7,500 miles) long:
Magadan – Susuman – Ust – Nera – Oymyakon – Tomtor – Khandyga – Yakutsk – Neryungri – Chita – Ulan-Ude – Irkutsk – Tayshet – Krasnoyarsk – Kemerovo – Novosibirsk – Omsk – Tyumen – Yekaterinburg – Kungur – Naberezhnye Chelny – Nizhny Novgorod – Moscow

It was actually really simple. Thanks to a certain nasty virus, the entire world was shut down. Pretty boring, right? I mean, you can’t really fly anywhere. So we had to come up with something else to do. We dug around in the archives and asked other travelers about interesting places to go in Russia in the winter. They had a bunch of different suggestions, one of which was Oymyakon.

I agreed pretty much right away. I figured we could go there during the holiday break, soak in the local atmosphere, and see what -50°C (-58°F) really feels like. But instead of “zip over to the pole of cold, freeze our butts off, and then go back,” we found ourselves in a magical world of white expanses, endless roads, and constant motion. We were all just enchanted and hypnotized by it. And we froze our butts off too, of course :)

But when we got to Yakutsk, I realized that we couldn’t just stop there. So we traded in our horses and buggies and kept going until we got to Moscow. But that wasn’t so much for tourism or curiosity as for work — we had to meet with partners and clients from all over the country.

Russia trip (2 of 3) - Hitchhiking The Road of Bones

Russian subtitled version:
Россия поездка 2 из 3 - Дорога Костей - С русскими субтитрами

Newer version with some photos and a voiceover:

After I finished uni, I took 11 weeks to travel to interesting and remote parts of the world. Part one covered the trip from Australia to Yakutsk. Part two covers the section where I hitch-hiked from Yakutsk to Magadan, a distance of 2000km on the Kolyma highway. I'm not a native (or even competent) speaker of Russian, and I traveled alone. I was on the highway during August, which is late summer and early autumn in that region. I was told to expect bears, brigands, terrible roads, dust, and death, however the closest I came was when a car I was in flipped 35km south of Atka. The trip took 12 days at a fairly easy pace, and can be walked in about 60 days.
