Guam Travel Guide

Guam Travel Guide

Guam is an island in the western North Pacific Ocean. It is the largest and southernmost island in the Mariana Islands archipelago. Guam is a territory of the United States of America. Guam enjoys a tropical marine climate: generally warm and humid, moderated by northeast trade winds.

The northern part of the island is a relatively flat limestone plateau and is comprised of two villages (Dedeo and Yigo) and the United States' Andersen Air Force Base. Dededo is Guam's most populous village. Highlights for visitors include the Guam National Wildlife Refuge Ritidian Unit, the Micronesia Mall, Two Lovers Point, parks, beaches and hiking trails. Dededo hosts a busy weekend flea market that attracts large crowds - vendors sell all kinds of items, local produce and tasty food.

Central Guam is quite metropolitan. The island's capitol of Hagåtña is the seat of government and features a historic walking path through the village. Tumon Bay is brimming with luxury hotels and high-end shopping. Destinations of interest here include: the Chamorro Village with its lively Wednesday Night Market; the historic Plaza de Espana and Dulce Nombre de Maria Cathedral-Basilica; plentiful beaches with water sports like parasailing, kite boarding, boating and personal watercraft. Local companies offer dolphin watching, diving, and fishing tours regularly. The most bustling nightlife is located in this region of the island - there are many bars, karaoke joints, and dance clubs up and down the Tumon strip. Shopping spots include Guam Premier Outlets and Agana Shopping Center. A new Guam Museum is currently under construction.

Guam's southern end is mostly rural and picturesque - featuring a volcanic mountain range and rolling green hills. Chamorro customs are preserved at Inarajan's Gef Pa'go Cultural Village; it features thatched huts and offers a picture of pre-World War II Guam. Visitors can learn to make a variety of crafts including woven items, rope, sea salt, coconut candy and coconut oil. Off the coast of Merizo and across a lagoon sits Cocos Island. Talofofo Bay's black sand beaches are a beautiful contrast to the white sand found around the rest of the island. Hiking trails are plentiful, and lead to destinations like Upper and Lower Sigua Falls and an ancient Spanish bridge down in Cetti Bay. The War in the Pacific National Historic Park operates a visitor center near the main gate of US Naval Base Guam.

Hagåtña (formerly Agana or Agaña) is the capital of the island and the seat of government. Agana Heights - Suburban area in the hills above Hagåtña. Fort Apugan, a Spanish Era fort looks out over Hagåtña Bay and the island.

Asan is the home to the War in the Pacific Park's Asan Beach Park. The park preserves the shoreline where the Marines and Army landed to retake the island in 1944. Inarajan and Gef Pa'go Cultural Park features handicrafts, dance performances and local food.

Mangilao is the home to higher learning institutions on the island - the University of Guam and Guam Community College. Tumon is the tourism district that features high-end shopping and hotels, bustling nightlife and adult entertainment. Visit Umatac during March to see a re-enactment of Ferdinand Magellan's landing, complete with burning huts and angry islanders.

GUAM FORT SOLEDAD

Fort Soledad was one of many historic stops I made during my recent trip to Guam. Fort Soledad was built in Umatac Guam and was the 4th fortification built. The fort was used by the Spanish during their occupation of Guam until 1815 when the Mexican revolution caused the fort to become unneeded and it was then abandoned. After World War 2 the fort was raided by treasure hunters until protected by the government of Guam. Fort Soledad is a much visit during any trip to Guam. A true piece of Guam history.

Guam: World War II Historical Sites and Monuments

Island of Guam, Pacific Ocean - the second world war (WW2) Japanese headquarters during battle of Guam. Let's go for a brief tour inside (and above) the second world war (WW2) Japanese headquarters location and communications center, used during the battle of Guam, in the island of Guam in the Western Pacific Ocean. The WW2 Japanese headquarters in Guam is a very historic place indeed, let's do it!! Battle of Guam, (21 July–10 August 1944), World War II event. In attacking Guam, U.S. forces were not only acquiring a fine harbor and a number of airfields to use in future operations, but were also liberating U.S. territory—Guam had been captured by the Japanese in 1941. As elsewhere, Guam’s Japanese garrison fought practically to the last man. American casualties included some 1,700 dead and 6,000 wounded; Japanese deaths totaled some 18,000.

0:46 Location - Where is Guam? We're a little island in the middle of the Pacific Ocean, within the vicinity of Australia, Hawaii, the Philippine Islands, and Japan. It's very easy to travel from here to other parts of Southeast Asia.

1:34 Size - 30 miles long, about 210 sq. miles. As of 2021, its population is roughly 168,000. From personal experience, you could drive around the entire island in about 2 hours, which means commute from home to workplace is never more than 30-40 minutes.

2:10 Weather - It is consistently humid on Guam. Summertime is when the warmer temperatures are felt with highs between 88-91 degrees F and lows between 77-80 degrees F. You WILL sweat so dress light! Cooler temperatures in the 70s occur during the months of November to January/mid-February.

2:50 Religion - Guam is a predominantly Catholic community, but there are other smaller church groups such as Baptist, Mormon, Seventh Day Adventist, Methodist, etc. that exist.

3:09 Schools - There are 27 public Elementary Schools, 8 public Middle Schools, 6 public High Schools, and about 13-14 private schools that house a variety of grade levels. The two college level schools present are the University of Guam and the Guam Community College. Guam colleges are highly recommended if you want to pursue a degree in Marine Biology.

3:38 Military on Guam - There are two main military installations, one being Andersen Air Force Base in Yigo and the other being Naval Base Guam (Big Navy) in Santa Rita. There are other smaller installations around the island like NCTS, Naval Magazine, Naval Hospital, etc. which means many federal job opportunities AND a high turnover cycle for military personnel and families stationed on Guam.

4:15 People - This mini melting pot is home to so many! Ranging from CHamorus, Filipinos, tourists, military, and other Micronesian Islanders, you're bound to meet people from so many backgrounds and ethnicities. DON'T mix up the CHamorus with chods/chauds. A true CHamoru will be very welcoming and hospitable to newcomers while a chod/chaud will be more closed off.

6:38 Where to stay - This is a broad statement because the bottomline is that you should definitely explore the different areas and villages IN PERSON. From a general description, the noisier, busier parts of Guam would be the villages of Dededo, Tumon, Tamuning, and sometimes east Agana. The quieter areas that are away from the hustle and bustle would be villages like Mangilao, Yona, Talofofo, Inarajan, Asan, Agat, Santa Rita, Umatac, and Merizo.

8:10 Different personal experiences - I'm not going to lie and say everyone has loved Guam; people have either loved their time here or they've hated it. However, it all depends on what YOU make of it. Are you going to stay at home the whole time and miss out on potential experiences and friendships, or are you someone that will explore the island and make an active effort to meet people and discover all the hidden gems Guam has to offer? It's really up to you when you get here.

Guam 2021

I filmed this while on a couple different layovers in order to share some of the beauty that Guam holds. Guam is truly an underrated travel destination with miles and miles of white-sand beaches and crystal clear water that transitions to aquamarine before turning a vibrant blue. For the history buffs, there are endless numbers of places to explore from WWII ruins all the way back to Magellan.

Exploring Guam's Chamorro History & Culture

Exploring Guam's Chamorro History and Culture

The tropical island of Guam, located in the Western Pacific Ocean, is where America's day begins because of its proximity to the International Date Line, making it the first place in the U.S. to start the day. On my trip to Guam, I appreciated the early start because it gave me plenty of time to discover the island's rich history and culture. Guam's native inhabitants are the Chamorro people, and the influence of their traditions and customs can be found in every aspect of the island's history, cuisine and legends.

Chamorro Life, Then and Now
I started my cultural exploration at Gef Pa'go Chamorro Cultural Village, a living museum of traditional thatched huts overlooking Inarajan Bay. Here, visitors can experience life as Guam's native Chamorros lived in the early 1900s. My favorite part was looking on as our Chamorro hosts demonstrated traditional crafts and practices of the time period. I even got to take home my own coconut candy and hand-woven basket.

Another great way to observe Chamorro life today is to participate in a Village Fiesta. Families in Guam's 19 villages prepare local cuisine and open their homes to friends, family and visitors. This tradition, which honors the patron saint in each community, dates back to the late 1600s, but the celebrations are just as festive and welcoming today. You can't get much more local than this! Another way to enjoy Guam's cuisine and culture is at a Chamorro Cultural Dinner Show, held at many of the island's hotels and resorts. The shows blend traditional dance, storytelling and costumes with the delicious flavors of an island barbeque.

Exploring Guam's History

I wanted to learn more about Guam's role during World War II, so I visited the T. Stell Newman Visitors Center, located in The War in the Pacific National Historic Park, just outside the Naval Base Guam. This center tells the story of Guam during World War II, including the time under Japanese rule. The center has brand new, interactive exhibits that effectively tell Guam's story. You can also watch the powerful 10-minute movie, The Battle for Guam.

Another favorite for history lovers is Latte Stone Park, home to eight ancient latte stones, which are thought to have served as support structures for Chamorro houses. They are comprised of two pieces: a supporting column and a capstone. Latte stones can be found only in Guam and the Mariana Islands. It was amazing to witness these literal pieces of history!

Living Legends at Two Lovers Point

One of my favorite sites was Two Lovers Point, as it blends the island's culture and stunning beauty with a tragic tale of two star-crossed lovers. According to Chamorro legend, two lovers who had been forbidden by their families to marry tied their hair together before leaping to their deaths so they could be together in eternity. With observation points over the sweeping 378-foot-high cliff-side landscape and the Philippine Sea, the site offers breathtaking views, making it a popular site for honeymooners and couples.

But, even the most practical person would fall in love with these views, just as I did with the welcoming people, fascinating culture and compelling stories of Guam.
