Royal Hotel Tumut in NSW by Grasshopper Travel

The Royal Hotel was built in 1854. A man named Henry Moon was responsible, selling his profitable flour mill, which he called ‘Star Flour’ and getting into the Hotel business with his sons. He originally called the hotel “The Rising Moon” and joked that it was run by the Son, Moon and Stars. Since that day there have been plenty more bad jokes told at the Royal, and to this day it remains an excellent choice for a quality feed, cold beer, good laugh or a bad punting tip. Tumut’s Royal Hotel has seen many changes over the last 35 years including the construction of its budget motel separate from the hotel building. The open then closing of a small bottle shop at the rear of the block. The expansion of the retail floor to fit the current restaurant with the most significant change being a major renovation conducted in early 2000s to give the Royal its internal face lift. The Royal boasts 11 ensuited motel style rooms at the rear of the Hotel Block, as well as 8 “Pub” rooms upstairs (shared facilities) for those looking to travel on a tight budget, specializing in short stay accommodation, the Royal has something to suit your needs. The kitchen at the Royal Hotel or as we prefer to call it, “RHT” is open 7 days a week for lunch and 6 days per week for dinner (Mon to Sat), and for breakfast on Sunday mornings from 8.30am, we also have hand made pizzas available late in the evening for those who get peckish. Chef’s Amber Jones and Jess Bevan, along with their team are prepared to cater for patrons and take pride in customer satisfaction. Undoubtedly the youngest team in the district, the team prides themselves on producing quality food every time, with an emphasis on fresh product, don’t be fooled by the age of these young ladies, they are fast becoming known for producing Tumut’s finest food, not just by locals but also by the many visitors to our beautiful town.

A TASTE of TUMUT | Adelong Gold Mine Ruins + Apples, Cider, Gin, Beer in Tumut & Batlow NSW

We had no idea Tumut was so delicious, but after a day exploring the area it's very clear that it is! We popped into an Apple Orchard, a Distillery, a Brewery and a historic Gold Mine in ruins on the river. If you're exploring the southern part of NSW, Australia, you can't afford to miss this one.

4K Tumut Virtual Walking Tour

My first walk since the world problem started. I will get out more as conditions improve. Take care Everyone.

Tumut is a town in the Riverina region of New South Wales, Australia, situated on the banks of the Tumut River.

Tumut sits on the north-west foothills of the Snowy Mountains and is located on the traditional lands of the Wiradjuri, Wolgalu and Ngunnawal Aboriginal peoples.

Tumut is often referred to as the 'gateway to the snowy' Snowy Mountains Scheme. The former Tumut Shire was administered from offices located in the town. Tumut is approximately 410 kilometres (250 mi) south-west of Sydney and 525 kilometres (330 mi) north-east of Melbourne.

Tumut is home to a number of historic buildings, including an Anglican church designed by Edmund Blacket and a Courthouse designed by James Barnet. Many of the pubs in the town have been in use from the mid to late 1800s.

Early settlers established many European deciduous trees throughout the area. The stand of Poplars, Elm and Willow, amongst others, create a well renowned display of colour over autumn. Tumut celebrates this with the yearly Festival of the Falling Leaf.

Tumut Pond Reservoir, Snowy Mountains Scheme, NSW

Tumut Pond Dam is a major ungated concrete arch dam across the upper reaches of the Tumut River in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Australia. The dam's main purpose is for the generation of hydro-power and is one of the sixteen major dams that comprise the Snowy Mountains Scheme, a vast hydroelectricity and irrigation complex constructed in south-east Australia between 1949 and 1974 and now run by Snowy Hydro.
The impounded reservoir is called the Tumut Pond Reservoir, or less formally, the Tumut Pondage.
Completed in 1959, Tumut Pond Dam is a major dam, located approximately 3 kilometres (1.9 mi) south-east of Cabramurra. The dam was constructed by a consortia comprising Kaiser-Walsh-Perini-Raymond based on engineering plans developed by the United States Bureau of Reclamation under contract from the Snowy Mountains Hydroelectric Authority.
