Slovenia here we come!
At first we wanted to go straight from Hungary to Croatia and skip Slovenia completely because we had been there a bunch of times before already. But as the weather forecast said that it will be even rainier in Croatia, we headed from Lake Balaton to Maribor where we had the loveliest Couchsurfing host cooking for us and taking care of us two wet hitchhikers.
The next day they even invited us to join them on a trip to Ljubljana where we stayed with our friend Blaz who hosted us on his amazing farm in Trzin .
Thanks a lot for your hospitality, brother!

The next day we headed east towards Trbovlje and then to our third country of this trip, Croatia, where a CS host awaited us already.

Dvonadstropni (dvopodni) električni vlaki KISS. Slovenske železnice
Od petka, 14. januarja 2022, se po slovenskih tirih lahko zapeljete z dvopodnimi (dvonadstropnimi) električni vlaki KISS. Ti vlaki vozijo po vseh elektrificiranih progah. Potnikom prinašajo poleg večjega udobja, prostornosti in funkcionalnosti tudi izkušnjo pogleda skozi panoramska okna nadstropje višje, kar je zagotovo posebno doživetje.
Kot novi enopodni vlaki modela FLIRT, tudi novi dvopodni električni vlaki modela KISS nudijo potnikom več udobja in funkcionalnosti. Ti vlaki imajo hitrejše pospeševanje in potovalne hitrosti do 160 kilometrov na uro. Gre za sodobne in prostorne vlake, ki omogočajo enostavnejši vstop in izstop tudi gibalno oviranim osebam – vsi vlaki imajo izvlečno stopnico in dodatno mobilno klančino za invalidski voziček. Na voljo je sodoben potniški informacijski sistem, ki je prilagojen tudi slepim in slabovidnim ter gluhim in naglušnim potnikom. Sedeži so opremljeni z vtičnicami za polnjenje elektronskih naprav, na voljo je brezplačen Wi-Fi signal ipd. Tudi ta model vlaka nudi več prostora za prevoz koles, velika panoramska okna, prostorne toaletne prostore, prilagojene gibalno oviranim osebam s previjalno mizo za otroke idr. Pomemben je tudi okoljevarstven vidik, saj so tudi ti vlaki energetsko varčni.
Do oktobra 2022 bo na slovenskih tirih skupno 52 novih potniških vlakov. Od tega bo 21 enopodnih električnih vlakov Flirt, 10 dvopodnih (dvonadstropnih) električnih vlakov Kiss ter 21 enopodnih dizelskih vlakov Flirt.
Novi vlaki pomenijo pomemben prispevek h kvaliteti storitev potniškega prometa Slovenskih železnic in hkrati javnega prometa v Sloveniji.

Upper Carniola
Upper Carniola (Slovene: Gorenjska; Italian: Alta Carniola; German: Oberkrain) is a traditional region of Slovenia, the northern mountainous part of the larger Carniola region. The centre of the region is Kranj, while other urban centers include Jesenice, Tržič, Škofja Loka, Kamnik, and Domžale. It has around 300,000 inhabitants or 14% of the population of Slovenia.
Its origins as a separate political entity can be traced back to the 17th century, when the Habsburg duchy of Carniola was divided into three administrative districts. This division was thoroughly described by the scholar Johann Weikhard von Valvasor in his 1689 work The Glory of the Duchy of Carniola. The districts were known in German as Kreise (kresija in old Slovene). They were: Upper Carniola with its centre in Ljubljana, comprising the northern areas of the duchy; Lower Carniola, comprising the east and south-east, with its centre in Novo Mesto; and Inner Carniola comprising the west and south-west of the duchy, with its centre in Postojna.
This division remained, in different arrangements, up to the 1860s, when the old administrative districts were abolished and Upper Carniola was subdivided into smaller districts of Kranj, Radovljica and Kamnik. Nevertheless, the regional identity remained strong also thereafter. Upon the dissolution of Austria-Hungary after World War I, Carniola was incorporated first into the State of Slovenes, Croats and Serbs and then into the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes and it ceased to exist as a separate political and geographical unit. The Carniolan regional identity soon faded away, but the regional identification with its sub-units (Upper, Lower and, to a lesser extent, Inner Carniola) remained strong.
The landscape is characterised by the mountains of the Southern Limestone Alps, predominantly by the Julian Alps and the Karawanks range at its northern rim. (Wikipedia)
