Welcome to Mongar - Bhutan | Asia Senses Travel

Mongar marks the beginning of Eastern Bhutan. The second largest town in the sub-tropical east, Mongar like Trashigang further east, is situated on the side of a hill in the contrasts to other towns of Western Bhutan which was built on the valley floor.
Gushing waterfalls, steep cliffs with even steeper drops, blazing flowers and constantly changing vegetation combine to make this journey as varied as it is beautiful.
The landscape here is spectacular with stark cliffs and gorges and dense coniferous forests. The region is notably famed for its weavers and their special textiles generally considered to be the best in the country. The Kurtoe region of Lhuntse is also the ancestral home of royal dynasty.

The local people from Mongar and Trashigang gather at Drametse Lhakhang to witness the annual religious festival, celebrated every year on the 10th day of Bhutanese calendar and locally known as Kaggsol Chenmo, Trel Da Tshechu and Daw Drugpai Choep.

Bhutanese monks visit Trashigang dzong in Bhutan

Monks who are living in the Trashigang dzong, Bhutan and they are happily living out there, following the pure buddhism path for enlightenment.

The monasteries spread throughout Bhutan. Monks rank among the happiest citizens in Bhutan and are treated with great respect by the population and government.

Dzongs (means fortress) are the most prominent and important building in most villages and often encompass a monastery in them. Monasteries are also schools and there are plenty of young monks at different ranks.

Trashigang is a town in eastern Bhutan and the district capital of the Trashigang Dzongkhag.

Travel Photography: Capturing the Colors and Culture of Trashigang Tsechu Festival in Bhutan

Hi again, everyone; here is another travel photography video from Bhutan. This time, I'm excited to take you on a behind-the-scenes journey of my adventure as a travel photographer at Bhutan's Trashigang Tsechu Festival.

This unique and vibrant festival is one of Bhutan's most important and culturally significant events, and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to photograph it.

The Trashigang Tsechu is a Buddhist festival held in Trashigang, a district located in the eastern part of Bhutan. It's celebrated over several days. During this time, locals and visitors come together to honor Guru Rinpoche, also known as Padmasambhava, who the Bhutanese people consider the second Buddha. The festival is a time of joy and celebration, with people dressed in traditional costumes and masks and performing traditional dances and ceremonies.

As a travel photographer, I was drawn to the Tsechu because of its unique cultural significance and incredible visual appeal; that's why I timed my visit to Bhutan during this time. The festival is a feast for the senses, and I encourage anyone to put a Bhutanese festival on his bucket list.

During my time, I was able to capture beautiful and unique moments that truly showcase the beauty and culture of Bhutan.

In this vlog, I'll take you behind the scenes of my adventure at the Tsechu, but later on, I also photographed the streets of Trashigang, and the Trashigang Dzong, during blue hour.

All the photos on this vlog were made with the Fujifilm GFX100s and the GF 45-100mm and GF 100-200mm lenses.

Also, if you like to see the photos in high resolution, head over to my blog post at

Lastly, is Bhutan on your bucket list? And let me know what you think of the photos in the comments.

Join me on this incredible journey as we dive deep into the heart of Bhutan's Trashigang Tsechu Festival!

Best Places To Visit In Bhutan 🇧🇹 | Shahwaiz Essa

Bhutan's culture is strongly based on its Tibetan form of Mahayana Buddhism, which contains a sprinkling of Tibet's ancient Bon shamanist religion. The country's rich heritage, protected by Bhutan's isolation from the modern world until the 1960's, is still very much in evidence.

Fun Fact: In Bhutanese architecture, there is generally no planning and designing done on paper before a structure is built. The chief carpenter is the master of work and he has the size, layout and structure in his mind. He uses parts of his body for measurement and proportions of the different features of the building. He supervises other carpenters, stone-cutters and village workers. No nails are used and the wood pieces are assembled by the dovetail technique!
