TIL of the relationship between Fall River and Tiverton.
In 1856, the northern part of the town was set apart from Tiverton, and renamed Fall River, Rhode Island, by the Rhode Island General Assembly.[9] On March 1, 1862, in a case between the states that reached the United States Supreme Court, both Fall Rivers were made part of Massachusetts and the state boundary was placed in its current location near State Avenue.

What are the best seaside towns in the United Kingdom? New towns are developing at the seaside across the UK in addition to those ancient towns and cities. All of these towns and cities are worming their way into the hearts of tourists from home and abroad. With due respect to these towns, and out of a deep sense of duty, we want to identify which of these towns are the best so that we can help the decision-making process for those having reasons to consider seaside towns. On the basis of that, we present to you the 10 best seaside towns in the UK.

10. Swanage, Dorset, England
The tenth place we’ll consider as one the best seaside towns in the UK is Swanage in South West of England. The town has been a popular seaside resort since Victorian times. Up till now, families have continued to enjoy its calm shallow beach. This seaside is also one of the 10 best seaside resorts in the UK.
With its panoramic views, the seaside resort offers relaxing luxurious holidays in self-catering accommodation in caravans and luxury hot tub lodges. If you want to own a holiday home, they’re available here with unrivaled views across the bay. The town is about one kilometer from the leisurely beautiful Swanage Railway. Its proximity to this and other parks, beaches, and castles makes it a good choice.

Though it’s almost an island, its sandy beach and hut-lined promenade offer a wonderful environment for holidaymakers and weekenders.
7. Filey, North Yorkshire, England
Ironically to some, Filey which is a town in the Borough of Scarborough considered unpopular by some people is one of the 10 best seaside towns in the UK. Truly, this beautiful seaside destination in North Yorkshire deserves a slot here as one of the most popular in the UK. It used to be a fishing village before developing into a popular resort with a very large beach that is playing a remarkable role in popularizing it.
It is quieter than most of its neighbors and most of the other coastal towns. This is because it has enough accommodations, seats, and transportation. There is no need for any rush here. You can just go there and enjoy your peace.

Discover the Secrets of Rhode Island's Revolutionary War History from Above | An Aerial Tour
Like many New England Towns, Tiverton, Rhode Island saw many conflicts throughout the Revolutionary War, and Fort Barton is no exception. The fort, originally named Tiverton Heights Fort, was built in 1777 to protect the Sakonnet River from British occupied Aquidneck Island.
The fort during its active years contained several cannons and was constructed as an earthwork fort. On July 9th, 1777, Lieutenant Colonel William Barton and his men commanded a nighttime raid by boat and captured British General Richard Prescott. News of the raid spread through the colonies and provided a morale boost during the fight for independence. The fort was renamed to Fort Barton in his honor. In August of 1778, Fort Barton became a vital part of the Battle of Rhode Island and was used as a staging area for patriot forces. During the height of the battle, the fort was utilized during a planned invasion of Aquidneck Island, with roughly 10,000 soldiers gathering in Tiverton to cross the narrows. Due to a storm, French naval support were unable to aid the American troops and the men were forced to cross back to Tiverton under protection of Fort Barton cannons. Fort Barton was abandoned in 1781 but was briefly used during World War II as a lookout post for enemy aircraft and submarines.
Today, the only remains of the fort are some fortified earthworks. The lookout tower was built in 1970 for a better view of the bay and was added to the national register of historic places in 1973. The area currently serves as a recreational area and include several hiking trails through the Fort Barton Woods. Hikers today can climb to the top of the lookout tower, at Fort Barton, and see the same view of Aquidneck island that those brave patriots saw while fighting for our independence 245 years ago.

The Sakonnet River is a tidal strait in the state of Rhode Island which flows approximately 14 miles between Mount Hope Bay and Rhode Island Sound. It separates Aquidneck Island from the eastern portion of Newport County.
