SABA Island ~ Epic Caribbean Travels at its BEST ~ WeBeYachting.com

This video is of our epic day on the Island of SABA. We board the 9h00 hight speed ferry with flat calm weather. Spend the day visiting and returned to Sint Maarten on the 15h30 ferry.

I would like to extend a special thanks to our awesome guide & driver Mr. George (Who is also the owner of the Midway Bar). Cheers!

Saba is a Caribbean island and the smallest special municipality (officially public body) of the Netherlands.[4] It consists largely of the potentially active volcano Mount Scenery. Saba has a land area of 13 square kilometers (5.0 sq mi). As of January 2013, the population was 1,991 inhabitants, with a population density of 150 inhabitants per square kilometre (390/sq mi).[1] Its towns and major settlements are The Bottom (the capital), Windwardside, Hell's Gate and St. Johns.

AIRPORT: In 1963, Saba residents built the Juancho E. Yrausquin Airport. This 400-metre (1,300 ft) landing strip is reputed to be the shortest commercial runway in the world, and is restricted. Only trained pilots flying small STOL airliners, such as the Twin Otter and the Britten-Norman Islander may land there, as well as helicopters. Consistent air service from Sint Maarten and Sint Eustatius is available through Winair.

SABA Island ~ Ladder Bay ~ Epic UAV Drone ~ Caribbean Travels at its BEST ~ WeBeYachting.com

Ladder Bay is an anchorage on the leeward side of Saba Island. It sits directly under the 800 steps to the old Customs House perched precariously on the lip of a cliff overlooking the bay and is locally known as The Ladder. Prior to the opening of the road down to Fort Bay, this was the primary point of entry for supplies to the island.

Saba: the highest point in the Kingdom of the Netherlands | #shorts #saba #dutchcaribbean #caribbean

FULL VIDEO:

Rising dramatically from the depths of the Caribbean Sea is the stunning volcanic island of Saba. The small Dutch Caribbean Island is often called the “unspoiled queen” due to its pristine natural beauty. Visitors will discover a place where high-adrenaline scuba diving adventures and challenging nature hikes are balanced with plenty of opportunity for peace and quiet in a tranquil tropical setting.

In 1816, Saba became a possession of the Netherland Antilles. In 2010, Saba, along with St. Eustatius and Bonaire, joined the special municipality of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The known history of the island began about 1175 B.C. with its first settlers, the Ciboney Indians, settling near present-day Fort Bay. The next arrivals were the Arawak Indians who migrated from South America around A.D. 800. In 1493, Columbus sailed past Saba but did not attempt to land due to the treacherous volcanic coastline. It was 1632 before the first Europeans made an unexpected landing when they were shipwrecked and forced to take refuge on the island. The first attempt to settle the island occurred in 1640 when the Dutch West Indies Company located on St. Eustatius brought people over to colonize the island. Unfortunately, the infamous British pirate, Henry Morgan, had different plans. Due to the constant conflict between Britain and the Netherlands, Morgan chased the Dutch settlers off the island. Skirmishes continued over the next 200 years as ownership of the island bounced among the Dutch, Spanish, French and English. During this time, Saba’s first village, The Bottom, was established.

Saba became a haven for pirates for many years; when piracy was curtailed, people of Dutch, Irish, English, Scottish and African descent inhabiting the island eased into a calmer existence. As the men became sailors and fishermen, the women crafted delicate lace known as Spanish Work. Today, boutiques throughout the island sell this exquisite handmade lace, now called Saba lace, to its many visitors.

Agriculture also grew as locals began to cultivate the rich, volcanic soil. The island continued to progress as churches opened their doors in 1829, creating schools to educate the children. With the eventual construction of Saba’s only road, airport and pier, the island was opened to tourism in the late 1980s.

Windwardside is the second largest town on the island of Saba, aptly named for being on the windward side of the island.

The first permanent European settlements on Saba began in the 1640s. By the 1860s, Windwardside was one of 7 main districts, with The Bottom, St. John's, Booby Hill, Hell's Gate, Mary's Point (Palmetto Point), and Middle Island. The Windwardside district had its own elected head, as did the other districts. In 1860, the St. Paul's Conversion Church, Saba was built on the grounds of the former quarantine station in Windwardside.

Mount Scenery is a dormant volcano in the Caribbean Netherlands. Its lava dome forms the summit of the Saba island stratovolcano. At an elevation of 887 m (2,910 ft), it is the highest point in both the Kingdom of the Netherlands, and, since the dissolution of the Netherlands Antilles on 10 October 2010, the highest point in the Netherlands proper.

The Saba volcano is potentially dangerous. It is currently classified dormant, which means it is an active volcano that is not erupting now, but could erupt in the future. The last eruption was in or around the year 1640 which included explosions and pyroclastic flows. The most recent major eruption was at least 5,000 years ago. According to the U.S. Global Volcanism Program, Saba's volcano is the northernmost active volcano in the Caribbean.

The Caribbean Island of SABA! E83

In this episode onboard our Leopard 45 sailing catamaran, we spend a day with our friends, Ted and Catherine from SV Lucky on the Spirit of St. Martin watching the annual Heineken Regatta races. Then we got lucky with the weather and sailed to Saba, a passage that everyone told us not to bother with. There's no place to anchor, no beaches, and it's too rolly. Don't bother! they said.
Well, we are so happy that we didn't listen to everybody. We saw a weather window and took it, hoping to be fortunate enough to snag one of the four mooring balls on the west side of this magnificent Caribbean island. There's room for about four sailboats on the south side near the harbor, but that was completely full when we got there. Our Plan B was to keep sailing to St. Eustatius (Statia). Luckily, Plan A worked out for us.
Saba is a fabulous little island. With a general population of just 1500 people and some of the best hiking and views we've ever seen, it's truly a hidden gem.
We also feature new music from two of our favorite Blues musicians, Mike Zito and Albert Castiglia, on their Blood Brothers CD.

Thanks for watching and happy sailing!

One of the most beautiful carribean Islands. A divers Paradise, Great place for nature lovers.
