Come with Tais to the most incredible city in MACEDONIA, you'll discover the most beautiful hand painted Mosque in TETOVO and I’ve sure you have never seen anything like it before.
This is an unlikely place to find me, with only one bus a day, and a timetable that’s incorrect.
I’ve hired a car, What lay ahead was surprised I was not expecting.
TETOVO reminded me more of countries with Muslim populations like Turkey and Morocco.
Shop signs were no longer in the Cyrillic alphabet used in Macedonia.
There is a stone bridge over a river that flows through the heart of TETOVO, and as soon as you drive in, you’ll see Tetovo’s biggest attraction,
The painted Mosque. I’ve seen nothing like it before, and you will realise how special it is.
I was welcomed inside to see its equally beautiful interior. It is meticulously decorated with vibrant artwork and chandelier lights.
This was the first time I’d ever been into a mosque; I’m not religious; however, I appreciate architecture and arts.

I feel lucky to witness the beauty, and to have it to myself was a memorable experience.
The phrase “hidden gem” has never felt more appropriate.
A word of warning first: keep your credit card handy! After watching this you’ll want to book the next flight out of here to check out this fantastic place in #macedonia for a few days!

It's my first video in Macedonia and I was eager to get out into the country to see what I would find. I met Ron, a native of Tetovo online and he invited me to come with him to his town, just one hour away from Skopje to see how the people there are living close to the Albanian border. Tetovo, being nearly 80% ethnically Albanian is very different than much of Macedonia to the east, making for an interesting blend of Macedonia and Albania in one place. We go to old Ottoman architectural gems, try local food and get a taste of the local life in this video.

Exploring TETOVO | Inside the REAL NORTH MACEDONIA! 🇲🇰
An afternoon exploring Tetovo in North Macedonia including the hilltop Tetovo Fortress, the Colorful Mosque (Painted Mosque), the historic Old Stone Bridge & Tetovo Square. Join me for a tour of the city!

Tetovo is a gritty yet captivating city revealing a wealth of fascinating places and interesting people. It’s the perfect place for anybody wanting to experience the real North Macedonia away from the tourist crowds.
I started my day at an old Yugoslav Memorial called the ‘Monument to Fallen Soldiers of the Partisan Detachment Korab’ and then joined the relatively inexpensive toll road heading north. I got lost in the suburbs of Tetovo before finding a small mountain road that led me to the abandoned Tetovo Fortress Kale (Тетовска тврдина Кале).
There I met a friendly local who was enjoying the good weather and flying his drone. We talked about Tetovo and he gave me a few ideas of where to visit in the city. He kindly provided the drone footage of me driving down the mountainside back into Tetovo - I will link to his Instagram page below.
Whilst in North Macedonia I found parking in the cities and towns to be a real challenge! Those difficulties continued in Tetovo. Once sorted though I was free to explore the city centre and enjoy some really authentic North Macedonian culture.
I was invited into the Colorful Mosque (Xhamia e Larme) which is also know as the Painted Mosque and decorated with spectacular frescos both inside and out. I then took a walk alongside the river where I spotted Bey’s Turkish Bath and an Ottoman era old Stone Bridge. I seeked out the main Tetovo Town Square before heading back to the car and driving to my hotel.
In the final scene I’ll give you a tour of my room at the Hotel Yal and tell you how much it cost to stay there.
And with that there was one day left of my North Macedonian road trip so let’s make it a good one!
