Springfield, Illinois - Abraham Lincoln's Hometown Sights
A tour of Springfield, Illinois - hometown of President Abraham Lincoln. While this video doesn't include the primary Lincoln sites, like the Home, Tomb or Presidential Museum, it includes lesser-known and off-the-beaten path sites. These include the Lincoln Depot, the Dana-Thomas House, Edwards Place, Camp Butler National Cemetery, the Funeral Train Marker, and the Thomas Rees Memorial Carillon. I also took an excursion to a nearby town called Taylorville, which has a statue of Abraham Lincoln with a Pig, a JFK Statue in a Cemetery, and the Grave of Kay the Circus Elephant.

I recently spent a week at Lake Taylorville visiting friends in the city of Taylorville Illinois. Nice little gem of a place to stay with a great marina, well maintained roads and camping areas.
Here is a quick tour of the area...
Driving Around Small Town Taylorville, IL in 4k Video
Filmed on Saturday, February 18th 2023, I drive around the small town of Taylorville, Illinois to see what's going on.
Taylorville is a city in and the county seat of Christian County, Illinois, United States. The population was 10,506 at the 2020 census, making it the county's largest city.
Taylorville was founded on May 24, 1839, and was named after John Taylor, a planning commissioner for the state of Illinois.
Taylorville was known (in the early to mid-1990s) to have had a high rate of neuroblastoma, a cancer affecting the adrenal gland and striking children. The local power company Central Illinois Public Service Company was sued and lost for contaminating the groundwater in 1994.
Some outer homes and a business in Taylorville were damaged by an F1 tornado on April 2, 2006.
On August 11, 2012, a Beechcraft Model 18 airplane crashed into a residential area of Taylorville, killing the pilot but injuring none on the ground. A subsequent NTSB investigation into the accident concluded that an improper flap configuration and failure to maintain the correct airspeed due to pilot error, resulted in the crash.
At about 5:15 PM on December 1, 2018, as part of the December 2018 tornado outbreak, a strong tornado hit Taylorville. The tornado injured at least 26 residents and damaged more than 600 homes and businesses, 34 of which were completely destroyed. Damage surveys by the National Weather Service rated the tornado EF3 with winds over 155 mph (249 km/h).
As of the 2020 census there were 10,506 people, 5,064 households, and 2,507 families residing in the city. The population density was 859.39 inhabitants per square mile (331.81/km2). There were 5,336 housing units at an average density of 436.48 per square mile (168.53/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 93.81% White, 0.90% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0.94% Asian, 0.02% Pacific Islander, 0.52% from other races, and 3.56% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.65% of the population.
There were 5,064 households, out of which 41.33% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.45% were married couples living together, 9.72% had a female householder with no husband present, and 50.49% were non-families. 44.10% of all households were made up of individuals, and 20.22% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.96 and the average family size was 2.07.
The city's age distribution consisted of 20.7% under the age of 18, 6.4% from 18 to 24, 26.2% from 25 to 44, 27% from 45 to 64, and 19.7% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 42.4 years. For every 100 females, there were 84.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 79.5 males.
The median income for a household in the city was $41,397, and the median income for a family was $63,885. Males had a median income of $42,474 versus $28,466 for females. The per capita income for the city was $26,513. About 9.7% of families and 13.1% of the population were below the poverty line, including 13.5% of those under age 18 and 12.7% of those age 65 or over.
Taylorville is served by Illinois Route 29, Illinois Route 48 and Illinois Route 104. By closest major city, Illinois Route 29 connects Taylorville to Springfield Illinois; Illinois Route 48 connects to Decatur Illinois including, from there, highway access to Pana Illinois via US Highway 51 and to Champaign Illinois via Interstate 72; and Illinois Route 104 connects Taylorville to Jacksonville Illinois.
The IHSA single season boys' basketball record of 45–0 was set by Taylorville High School in 1944. Ron Bontemps and Johnny Orr were team members.
In 1911, the Taylorville Christians were a member of the Illinois–Missouri League, an American minor league baseball league. Future Baseball Hall of Famer Ray Schalk played on that team.
The town newspaper is the Breeze-Courier, which is the only daily newspaper serving Christian County. The State Journal-Register, published in Springfield, Illinois, covers Taylorville and Christian County quite extensively. The Decatur, Illinois Herald & Review covers the area as well. #driving #travel #drivingtour

Driving Around Small Town Nokomis, Illinois in 4k Video
Filmed on Thursday, June 8 2023, I drive around the village Nokomis, IL to see what's going on.
The area where Nokomis is now situated was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Kickapoo and Pottawatomie. European settlers began arriving in the early 19th century, and in 1854, the town of Nokomis was officially laid out by a surveyor named Stephen Latham.
In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, coal mining became a major industry in Nokomis and the surrounding region. Several coal mines were opened, providing employment and contributing to the local economy. However, by the mid-20th century, the demand for coal declined, and the mines gradually closed down.
The Ojibwe word Nookomis or Nokomis, translates to grandmother or my grandmother in English. The term is used to refer to a respected female elder or grandmother figure in the Ojibwe culture.
It's likely that the town of Nokomis, IL was named after a Native American woman or as a way to honor the Native American locals.
As of the census of 2020, there were 2,142 people residing in the city.
The racial makeup of the city was 99.46% White, 0.25% Native American, 0.04% Asian, and 0.25% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.17% of the population.
The median household income was $55,536 and the per capita income was $31,809. 14.3% of the population lived below the poverty line.

Driving Around Small Village Mount Auburn, IL in 4k Video
Filmed on Tuesday, March 28, 2023, I drive around the small town Mount Auburn, Illinois to see what's happening.
Mount Auburn is a village in Christian County, Illinois, United States. The population was 452 at the 2020 census.
Mount Auburn was founded on July 11, 1839. It was seriously considered as possibility for the state capital at the time the center of government was moved from Vandalia to Springfield.
In the early beginnings of this country, as pioneers trekked west for opportunity and prosperity, the old Cumberland Road, which began at Cumberland, Maryland, was left by many at Terre Haute, Indiana. These people then followed what was known as the Terre Haute-Decatur-Springfield Trail, which passed south of Decatur, south of the Sangamon River, through what became Mt. Auburn and on to Springfield.
The Village of Mt. Auburn was founded in 1839, located on an elevation about fifty feet above the surrounding country.
In the Springfield Journal of September 18, 1839, the new village was described as follows:
This elevation is most beautiful and commands an extensive view, overlooking the country for some ten or fifteen miles, and embracing within the limits of vision the towns of Allenton, Stonington, and but for an intervening skirt of time Edinburg, and part of Sangamon and Logan counties.
This tract of country, for beauty, fertility and health, we do not believe is exceeded in any location in the state. The land is gently and agreeable undulating, such as any eastern man would select for a farm, every foot of which seems capable of cultivation.
Established on May 8 of that year, the Mt. Auburn Post Office is reputed to be the oldest now in existence in Christian County.
For years, rumor had it that Mt. Auburn was even considered as a site for the state capital, along with Springfield, Quincy and East St. Louis, when the capital was moved from Vandalia. #driving #travel #drivingtour

Driving Around Small Town Pana, Illinois in 4k Video
Filmed on Thursday, June 8 2023, I drive around the village Pana, IL to see what's going on.
The name Pana is said to have been derived from the Pawnee Native American tribe. The exact reason behind the selection of this name is uncertain.
Pana was founded in 1845 as a planned community by John R. Jones, an attorney from Kentucky. The town was strategically located along the Illinois Central Railroad, which greatly contributed to its early growth and development.
Pana's early development was closely tied to the railroad industry. The presence of the Illinois Central Railroad attracted businesses and settlers, leading to the town's rapid growth. By the late 19th century, Pana became a significant industrial center, with coal mining, agriculture, and manufacturing as major economic drivers. The town was known for its production of railroad ties, bricks, and agricultural products.
In the early 20th century, the city experienced several labor strikes and clashes between workers and mine owners. One of the most significant incidents was the Pana Riot of 1899, a violent conflict between miners and strikebreakers that resulted in casualties on both sides.
While the immediate violence was quelled, black miners felt tremendous hostility. Rather than return to Alabama and the Jim Crow South, from where they had been recruited, 211 of the nearly 300 African Americans remaining in town moved west to Weir, Kansas, to work at another mine.
Pana came to be known as the City of Roses, a nickname coined by local newsmen, the Jordan Brothers. Many major florists and growers set up shop here. At one time, there were 109 greenhouses in Pana.
The annual Pana Labor Day Parade is attended by up to 15,000 people, the largest such event in all of Illinois.
As of the 2020 census there were 5,199 people residing in the town.
The racial makeup of the town was 95.48% White, 0.38% African American, 0.13% Native American, 0.56% Asian, 0.29% from other races, and 3.15% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.94% of the population.
The median income for a household in the town was $47,701, and the per capita income for the town was $23,692. About 15.4% of the population were below the poverty line.

Driving Around Small Town Litchfield, IL in 4k Video
Filmed on Wednesday, March 1 2023, I drive around the village of Litchfield, Illinois to see what's going on.
Litchfield is a city in Montgomery County, Illinois, United States. The population was 6,605 at the 2020 census. It is located in South Central Illinois, south of Springfield, Illinois, and part of the Metro East of St. Louis.
Litchfield was platted in October 1853, and was originally named Huntsville, after it was thought that Railroad Chief Engineer George Hunt was going to be the one to bring in the railroad.
Earlier, Hardinsburg, about 2 miles (3 km) to the southwest, had been founded about 1850. Both towns were created in anticipation of the Terre Haute & Alton Railroad. Hardinsburg grew to about 50 people by 1854; but when it became clear that the railroad was going through Huntsville instead of Hardinsburg, many of the buildings in Hardinsburg were pulled across the prairie on runners to Huntsville beginning in January 1854, and most of the residents moved to the new site as well, becoming Litchfield's first residents. The railroad reached Huntsville in the autumn of 1864, and within two more years Hardinsburg had substantially disappeared. Only a small cemetery remains of Hardinsburg.
The new town of Huntsville was renamed in November 1855 after Electus Bachus Litchfield, who with his brothers earlier that year had donated land and convinced the railroad of where to place its shops and terminals.
The residents of Litchfield first voted to incorporate as a village on April 4, 1856. However, the village trustees failed to complete the incorporation; the village charter was dissolved in autumn of 1857 and the trustees closed the books for that village government on January 22, 1858. The state legislature granted a new municipal charter to Litchfield on February 16, 1859, and the first elections under that charter were held on March 7, 1859.
Milnot Company, known for its namesake product, Milnot, an evaporated filled milk, was founded in Litchfield in 1912 as The Litchfield Creamery Company by Martin Jensen. In 1916, a new plant was built at 120 W. St. John St. and operated until 1990. As of 2019, it has been repurposed as an indoor sports training facility.
The Ariston Café is one of the oldest restaurants along the historic U.S. Route 66, commonly known as Old Route 66, though the café itself claims it is possibly the oldest. The Ariston Café was founded in 1924 in the town of Carlinville, Illinois, but was moved to its present location. The café was inducted into the Route 66 Hall of Fame in 1992. Another landmark is Litchfield's Lake Lou Yaeger, located northeast of town. The Sky View Theater is a member of the Route 66 Hall of Fame and has been in operation since 1950. It is among the last drive-in theaters still operating along Route 66.
The Ariston Café, a popular stop along U.S. Route 66.
The grand opening of the Litchfield Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center was June 1, 2013. The museum is located across from the Ariston Café at 334 North Historic Route 66. The museum is owned by the Litchfield Museum and Route 66 Welcome Center Association and is maintained mainly through donations. In 1934, The Belvidere Motel opened in Litchfield. It is one of the oldest motels around.
As of the census of 2020, there were 6,605 people in 3,104 households residing in the city. 7.7% percent of the population was under the age of 5, 22.8% under the age of 18, and 19.4% over the age of 65. The racial makeup of the city was 96.8% White, 0.8% African American, 0.3% Native American, 0.4% Asian, and 1.7% two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.6% of the population.
The median income for a household was $50,368, and the per capita income in the city was $26,746. 18.2% of the population lived below the poverty line. #driving #travel #drivingtour
