Taunton is the county town of Somerset, England. Taunton has over 1,000 years of religious and military history, including a monastery dating back to the 10th century and Taunton Castle, which has origins in the Anglo Saxon period and was later the site of a priory. The Normans then built a stone structured castle, which belonged to the Bishops of Winchester. The current heavily reconstructed buildings are the inner ward, which now houses the Museum of Somerset and the Somerset Military Museum.

10 Most Hated Towns in England
What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

Taunton, Somerset! (2024) #TAUNTON
A visit to the busy Somerset county town of Taunton on a chilly winter's day!
Taunton is the county town of Somerset, England. It is a market town in and has a minster church. Its population in 2011 was 64,621. The town lies on the River Tone between the Quantock, Blackdown and Brendon hills, and is 38 miles (61 km) south-west of Bristol, 28 miles (45 km) north-east of Exeter, 63 miles (101 km) north-east of Plymouth and 40 miles (64 km) north-west of Weymouth.
Like most of South West England, Taunton has a temperate climate, wetter and milder than the rest of the country. The annual mean temperature is about 10 °C (50.0 °F). Seasonal temperature variation is less extreme because of the adjacent sea. The summer months of July and August have mean daily maxima of about 21 °C (69.8 °F). In winter, mean minimum temperatures of 1 °C (33.8 °F) or 2 °C (35.6 °F) are common.

Farthings 4 star Hotel Suite, review: Taunton, UK
This is an explanation of the Loft King Suite at the Farthings Hotel, Taunton UK.
You can make a booking on Booking.com
This is a beautiful hotel in Somerset which is 1.5 hours from London, fast train.
This was an exceptionally great stay, last stayed 15 years ago and wow so many improvements have been made with a dedicated team of collogues who really were such fun; and had a great sense of humour.
I would personally recommend this 4 star hotel if you want to stop over on your way to Cornwall or if you are just exploring the British country side this would be a great place to stop over and have a great dinner or Sunday lunch.
The meals are really cooked to perfection and the breakfast, what can I say: so much food you will struggle as I did, to eat it all.
So much choice and served beautifully.
The suites are very large, well appointed, excellent modern bathrooms, and I think the grounds need a special mention, manicured grounds lots to explore with wildlife. (Well done good job who ever is keeping the grounds, lots of work, so beautiful to look at.)
If you want a very quite tranquil setting to unwind and relax this would be my no. 1 choice out of London.
All Three Malls, Taunton, Somerset | Andy Wright UK Travel | Markets, Malls & Marts
In this episode of Markets, Malls, and Marts Travel Blog I visit Taunton in Somerset, just off the M5. It has a minimum of three town center malls, Crown Walk, County Walk, and Orchard.
They are very much typical of a town with a high street, in this case, pedestrianized. The Orchard mall is built on the old market, and known locally as the pig market.

The route this time takes us through Taunton in Somerset, and startsin the beautiful Vivary Park, all the high street shops of the Town Centre, and a wander down the independent quarter to Taunton Cricket Ground, home of Somerset Cricket Club.
It's a sunny day here in Taunton UK. So we grabbed our cameras, set off to Taunton and started filming to show you round this amazing town!
Taunton is a fairly affluent town in a great location. Once voted as one of the happiest towns in the UK, Taunton offers a great quality of life, plenty of things to do and a wide range of housing options.
Taunton (/ˈtɔːntən/) is a town in Somerset, England, with a 2011 population of 69,570. Its 1,000 years of history include a 10th-century monastery. Taunton Castle originated in the Anglo Saxon period and was later the site of a priory.
Taunton is the third biggest town in the county of Somerset, with a population of around 60,000 at time of filming this video.
Taunton Visitor Centre is the place to go to make the most of your time in Taunton Deane. The county town has plenty to offer from individual boutiques to historic architecture, modern dining to unspoilt views across the Blackdown Hills and the Quantock Hills (both Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Taunton offers a wide mix of activities, attractions and events
Linking the end of the pedestrianised High Street with the lower slopes of the Blackdown Hills is the award-winning Vivary Park, a member of the European Garden Heritage Network and laid out on the site of the vivarium fish lake which, in mediaeval times supplied the castle and the priory.
Vivary Park is an important part of Taunton’s history. The Taunton Flower Show has occupied the park for the first weekend in August since at least 1851. Previously a medieval vivarium for the priory and castle, the park was officially laid out in 1895 as a public space for recreation and organised events. The iconic front gates and bandstand still stand today. In 1902, an Oak tree was planted close to the bandstand to mark the coronation of Edward VII and the fountain was unveiled in 1907 as a memorial to the late Queen Victoria.
Today its 7.5 hectares are home to tennis courts, a large children’s play area, pay-and-play golf course, a tree trail and the Vivary Adventure and High Ropes Centre.
In addition to all the usual High Street names Taunton is home to a large number of independent shops, many of them long-established. You’ll find some grouped along the historic Bath Place and in the St James Street Riverside area.

Taunton Walk: Town Centre【4K】
Located in the southwestern county of Somerset is the town of Taunton.
The name Taunton literally means Tone Town, or town on the River Tone in reference to the river which flows through it. In the 9th century Taunton became one of a network of fortified settlements under Alfred the Great. It had accrued a population of around 1,500 by the time the Normans invaded in 1066.
Taunton was an industrial town as early as the 13th century, when it became a producer of wool, with the aid of fulling mills. These were a system of wooden hammers which pounded the wool in water to clean and thicken it after it was woven, powered by watermills. The wool was being exported to France by the 15th century, and to Africa by the 16th century.
A fine example of genuine Tudor architecture can be seen on Fore Street. The Tudor Tavern, seen just after the 3-minute mark, was completed in 1578, and is Grade I Listed.
During the Civil War in the 17th century Taunton was initially garrisoned by Parliamentary forces. A Royalist army took the town and held it for a year before it was recaptured by the Parliamentarians. Further attempts were made by the Royalists to reclaim it, but Taunton Castle withstood their advances. Following the 1660 Restoration of the Monarchy, Charles II ordered the part-destruction of Taunton Castle and revoked the town's charter in retaliation for its Parliamentary loyalties. The charter was, however, restored in 1677.
In 1685 a rebellion against King James II, successor to Charles II, took place in South West England. James Scott, 1st Duke of Monmouth claimed to be the rightful heir to the throne as the eldest son of Charles II. However, as he was an illegitimate son this was alleged to be an act of treason. Nevertheless, he garnered support across the South West, starting in Lyme Regis in Dorset, and culminating right here in Taunton where he was proclaimed King at the Market Cross (seen at the 4-minute mark). However, he was later captured by those loyal to James II, and was taken to the Tower of London. You can perhaps guess the rest.
Taunton expanded rapidly in the following centuries, becoming the county town of Somerset in 1935. It is home to Somerset County Cricket Club, who play at the County Ground on the south bank of the River Tone. The town is also famed for its cider production. In 1805 a small business formed, making cider in the nearby village of Norton Fitzwarren. This would go on to become the Taunton Cider Company in 1912.

Vivary park #2021 #park #taunton #uk #somerset
Vivary Park is close to Taunton town centre and covers 7.5 hectares of parkland. In medieval times the site was the fish farm or vivarium for the priory and castle. There are no visible remains of the lakes now, but this ancient use lives on in the park's name 'Vivary'.
The public park came about because it’s so close to the centre of the town. The land had been used as for public events since at least 1851 when the first Taunton Flower Show was held there.
It was sold to the council in 1894 and a year later it was laid out. The front gates, bandstand and one shelter date from this time. In 1902 an oak tree was planted close to the bandstand to mark the coronation of Edward VII. With money left over from the celebrations, the fountain was commissioned as a memorial to the late Queen Victoria. It was unveiled in 1907.
The park originally formed a part of the open setting to Wilton house. The park was extended to include part of the garden of Wilton House in 1924.
Vivary Park is a good surviving example of a late Victorian public park.
The park is well used and is maintained by our staff with great support and help from the Friends of Vivary Park. The volunteers do a great job in supporting the day to day work, special events and annual favourites.
The park closes at dusk every day.
