Myanmar Adventures in 2004#Shorts

My 10-day tour of Myanmar, or Burma, began after a short flight from Bangkok, Thailand to Yangon, in March 2004. I contracted for a guide/driver and car for 10 days. We traveled from Yangon to Bago, Taungoo, Inle Lake, Pindya Caves, Mandalay, Mt. Popa, Bagan, Pyay, and returned to Yangon. Yangon, formerly called Rangoon, lies in the fertile delta country of central Myanmar about 18 miles from the Andaman Sea. While in Yangon, I visited the Sule Paya. I toured the beautiful golden Shwedagon Paya, which is the most sacred of all Buddhist sites in the country. This dome rises 320 feet. Visitors must remove their shoes and socks and dress modestly to enter these and other sacred grounds throughout Myanmar. Women are seen bathing a Buddha in water in order to purify their thoughts and deeds while others visit other pavilions containing Buddha images, many festooned with flashing colored lights, and money.

In Bago, we visit the Kyaik Pun Paya, which consists of 4 one hundred-foot-high sitting Buddhas placed back to back. Then we visit the Kha Khat Wain Kyaung Monastery, which is one of the three largest monasteries in the country. The monks here are having their meals in relative silence. After an overnight in Taungoo, we visited the Shwemawdaw Paya, In Taungoo, we see all the forms of transportation, especially the trucks that are filled to overflowing with passengers.

In one of the pavilions at the Shwemawday Paya, we come across a nat spirit festival or nat pwe in progress. The drums, gongs, and xylophones are being played at full volume while the two spirit mediums or nat-gadaws sing and perform special dances that invite specific nats to possess them. Both of these nat-gadaws are men.

At Inle Lake, I spent the day on a small motorboat touring the market, stilt villages, small factories and craft shops, and payas. The Intha people who live around the lake are famous for propelling their boats by standing on one leg and wrapping the other leg around the oar. It enables the rower to see the floating vegetation and spot fish. I entered the Pindaya Caves to view some of the 8,000 Buddha images that people had placed there over the past several centuries. I visited the Mandalay Hill, toured some craft shops, and saw the Mandalay Marionettes Show. I applied gold leaf to the Mahamuni Buddha, which is a bronze Buddha that is about 13 feet tall and covered with a 6-inch layer of gold leaf applied by men over the past few centuries. I had fun riding the ferryboat up to see the Mingun monuments and getting guide service from three young girls along with a prayer from a nun.

I was joined by scores of monkeys on my walk to Mt. Popa, the home of all 37 nats. In Bagan, I was surprised to see that there were hundreds of stupas as far I could see, and many of them were in good condition or had been restored. The Shwezigon Paya was across from where I was staying, so I could see the monks on their way to collect alms from the villagers. In Paya, I visited the Shwesandaw Paya as well as the enormous seated Buddha figure known as Sehtatgyi Paya nearby which dominates the city landscape. On my return to Yangon, I attended a dance performance at the government-run Karaweik Palace.

Two days in Pyay, Myanmar

After leaving Yangon, I headed to Pyay, before going on to Bagan.
In this video you can see what I got up to during my two day visit in this small town in Southern Myanmar.

I had a really authentic experience with some locals, rode a bike until I'd sweated out my body weight, saw an amazing sunset and witnessed a very bizarre karaoke ritual....

Bago, formerly Pegu, is a city and the capital of Bago Division in Burma (or Myanmar). It is located 50 miles (80 km) from Yangon and has a population of 220,000.

According to legend, two Mon princess from Thaton founded Bago in 573 AD. It was written in the chronicles that eight years after enlightenment, Lord Buddha along with his disciples flew around the Southeast Asian countries. On his return journey while crossing the Gulf of Martaban, which happened to be at low tide, he saw two golden sheldrakes sitting, female on top of male, on a peak of land protruding out of the sea just enough for a bird's perch. Viewing this strange phenomenon, he predicted to his disciples that one day a country where his doctrine would thrive would come into existence in this vast sea area. That part of the sea, when it was silted up and ready for habitation approximately 1500 years after the prediction, was colonized by Mons from the Thaton Kingdom. Thus, the Mons became the first rulers of this country known in history as Hongsawatoi (Pali Hamsavati). Other variations on the name include Hanthawaddy, Hanthawady and Handawaddy; and in Thai หงสาวดี Hongsawadi.

The earliest mention of this city in history is by the Arab geographer Ibn Khudadhbin around 850 AD. At the time, the Mon capital had shifted to Thaton. The area came under rule of the Burmese from Bagan in 1056. After the collapse of Bagan to the Mongols in 1287, the Mon regained their independence.

In Lower Burma, a Mon dynasty established itself first at Martaban and then at Pegu. During the reign of king Rajadhirat (13831421) Ava and Pegu were involved in continuous warfare. The peaceful reign of Queen Baña Thau (Burmese: Shin Saw Bu; 1453-72) came to an end when she chose the Buddhist monk Dhammazedi (1472-92) to succeed her. Under Dhammazedi Pegu became a centre of commerce and Theravada Buddhism.

From 1369-1539, Hanthawaddy was the capital of the Mon Kingdom of Ramanadesa, which covered all of what is now Lower Burma. The area came under Burman control again in 1539, when it was annexed by King Tabinshweti to his Kingdom of Taungoo. The kings of Taungoo made Bago their royal capital from 1539-1599 and again in 1613-1634, and used it as a base for repeated invasions of Siam. As a major seaport, the city was frequently visited by Europeans, who commented on its magnificence. The Burmese capital relocated to Ava in 1634. In 1740, the Mon revolted and briefly regained their independence, but Burmese King Alaungpaya (or U Aungzeya) sacked and completely destroyed the city (along with Mon independence) in 1757.

Bago was rebuilt by King Bodawpaya (1782-1819), but by then the river had shifted course, cutting the city off from the sea. It never regained its previous importance. After the Second Anglo-Burmese War, the British annexed Bago in 1852. In 1862, the province of British Burma was formed, and the capital moved to Yangon. The name Bago is spelt peh kou literally. The substantial differences between the colloquial and literary pronunciations, as with Burmese words, was a reason of the British corruption Pegu.

In 1911, Hanthawaddy was described as a district in the Bago (or Pegu) division of Lower Burma. It lay in the home district of Rangoon, from which the town was detached to make a separate district in 1880. It had an area of 3,023 square miles (7,830 km2), with a population of 48,411 in 1901, showing an increase of 22% in the past decade. Hanthawaddy and Henzada were the two most densely populated districts in the province.

Hanthawaddy, as it was constituted in 1911, consisted of a vast plain stretching up from the sea between the To (or China Bakir) mouth of the Ayeyarwady River and the Pegu Yomas. Except the tract of land lying between the Pegu Yomas on the east and the Hlaing river, the country was intersected by numerous tidal creeks; many of which were navigable by large boats and some by steamers. The headquarters of the district was in Rangoon, which was also the sub-divisional headquarters. The second sub-division had its headquarters at Insein, where there were large railway works. Cultivation was almost wholly confined to rice, but there were many vegetable and fruit gardens.

Today, Hanthawaddy may be considered a district of the city of Bago.

At the end of the Second Anglo-Burmese war, Myanmar and British toll-posts were situated on Akauk Taung, a toll-hill in Myanmar language side by side. All boatmen had to pay tax to both posts. All sailing boats anchored close by the hill and waited till occasionally a week-long whirlpool ceased. The sailors prayed to God by carving Buddha images on the steep cliffside during that period. The mountain was named for the crafty toll-takers from the mid 19th Century.

Akauk Taung Mountain still stands on the bank of the Ayeyarwaddy River to the north of Pyay in Bago Region. It takes 15 minutes by boat sailing along the Ayeyarwaddy river to reach the Akauk Taung. Tourist can take remarkable photographs only from the boat which is in the middle of Ayeyarwaddy river.

Travel to Myanmar 2019

About Myanmar (Burma)
Myanmar is one of the most beautiful countries in Asia. A spectacular combination of people, culture and landscapes and all at low prices relative to other countries.

The people of Myanmar, for the most part, are Buddhists, exceptionally welcoming people from other counties.
Myanmar is a very large country, bigger than any European country, so a trip of several weeks will cover only a certain part of Myanmar and it is quite possible to cover a central part of Myanmar's famous places in a few weeks.

In the link that appears here, we describe the trip we made, a family of five (three small children) and what route we chose to do in order to make the most of our time.
We have spent 23 days in Myanmar. We started the travel to Myanmar in the northern part of Mandalay, although it can also be started in the southern part, Yangon, and from there to the north, it all depends on where you want to land and where you want to take off.

Here is a full article about our trip to Myanmar:

And here is a very short description or our experience:
We visited the following towns and villages:
Mandalay
Sagaing
Amarapura
Pyin Oo Lwin
Monywa
Bagan
Kakku
Mt. Popa
Loikaw
Inle Lake
Taungoo
Yangon

In each of the places, we have seen many unique sites. You can read all the details in the article and watch it in the video.

Recommended season
Everyone recommends traveling to the cooler season between November and January but it is important to remember that this is also the season loaded with tourists and prices of course accordingly, more expensive.
We usually travel in East or Southeast Asia at the end of the monsoon season in September, and if the season is not extreme, the trip experience is excellent.

Monsoon rains usually descend in the afternoon and freshen the air. The hotels and the hostels are almost empty and you do not have to book in advance. You can reach the place and choose where you want to sleep.
Which of course gives a lot of flexibility to the trip.
