Etruscan Necropolises of Tarquinia - UNESCO World Heritage Site

This UNESCO World Heritage site is a series of underground decorated tombs, just outside the town of Tarquinia near Rome. It shows us in great detail the cultural history of the Etruscan people, one of the tribes that occupied the area before the rise of Rome. Inside the tombs, we can see typical scenes of aristocratic and rural life - hunting, fishing, banqueting and dancing, and a couple of unusual surprises as well!

Cerveteri and Tarquinia - Italy Unesco World Heritage Site

Cerveteri is a town and comune of the northern Lazio, in the province of Rome. Originally known as Caere (also Caisra and Cisra), it is famous for a number of Etruscan necropoleis that include some of the best Etruscan tombs anywhere.Tarquinii (Etruscan Tarchnal) is said to have been already a flourishing city when Demaratus of Corinth brought in Greek workmen. It was the chief of the twelve cities of Etruria, and appears in the earliest history of Rome as the home of two of its kings, Tarquinius Priscus and Tarquinius Superbus. From it many of the religious rites and ceremonies of Rome are said to have been derived, and even in imperial times a collegium of sixty haruspices continued to exist there. The people of Tarquinii and Veii attempted to restore Tarquinius Superbus to the throne after his expulsion.

Tarquinia, formerly Corneto, is an old city in the province of Viterbo, Lazio, Italy known chiefly for its outstanding and unique ancient Etruscan tombs in the widespread necropoli or cemeteries which it overlies, for which it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage status.
In 1922 it was renamed after the ancient city of Tarquinii (Roman) or Tarch(u)na (Etruscan). Although little is visible of the once great wealth and extent of the ancient city, archaeology is increasingly revealing glimpses of past glories.

The Etruscan and Roman city is situated on the long plateau of La Civita to the north of the current town. The ancient burial grounds (necropoli), dating from the Iron Age (9th century BC, or Villanovan period) to Roman times, were on the adjacent promontories including that of today's Tarquinia.

The main necropolis of Tarchuna, part of which can be visited today, is the Monterozzi necropolis with some 6,000 tombs, at least 200 of which include beautiful wall paintings, and many of which were tumulus tombs with chambers carved in the rock below. The city towered above the Marta valley and was about 6 km from the sea. La Civita is made up of two adjoining plateaux, the pian di Civita and the pian della Regina, joined by a narrow saddle.

The Temple Ara della Regina measuring c. 44 × 25 m and dating to c. 4th-3rd century BC, it was built in tufa with wooden structures and decorations, notably the famous and exquisite frieze of winged horses in terracotta that is considered a masterpiece of Etruscan art. The large walls were built during the city's most prosperous period in the 6th century BC and measured about 8 km long, enclosing 135 ha, and long parts of the northern section are visible.

Tarquinii was one of the most ancient and important Etruscan cities.
Lucius Tarquinius Priscus and Lucius Tarquinius Superbus, became kings of ancient Rome. Numerous Roman religious rites and ceremonies derived from Tarchuna.

In 509 BC, after the overthrow of the Roman monarchy, the family of Tarquinius Superbus went into exile in Caere. He sought to regain the throne by force of arms. He convinced the cities of Tarchuna and Veii to support him and led their armies against Rome in the Battle of Silva Arsia. The Roman army was victorious however.

At the end of the 5th century and during the first half of the 4th century BC a brief revival took place, under the ascendancy of the Spurinna family, prominent up to the 1st century AD.
In this period colossal walls were built around the city in response to threats from the Celts and Rome. Tarchuna, not affected by Celtic invasions, finally colonised all its previously held territories in about 385 BC. This new flourishing state allowed a rapid recovery of all activities.

However, during the 4th century BC when Tarchuna's expansion was at its peak, a bitter struggle with Rome took place. In 358 BC, the citizens of Tarchuna captured and put to death 307 Roman soldiers; the resulting war ended in 351 BC with roman victory.

*𝑹𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒄𝒊𝒕𝒚*
When Tarchuna came under Roman domination is uncertain; in 181 BC its port, Graviscae (modern Porto Clementino) became a Roman colonia that exported wine and had coral fisheries. Little is known about Tarquinii in Roman times.

*𝑷𝒐𝒔𝒕-𝑹𝒐𝒎𝒂𝒏 𝒆𝒓𝒂*
The ancient city had shrunk to a small fortified settlement during the early Middle Ages while the more strategically placed Corneto (possibly the Corito mentioned in Roman sources) grew progressively to become the major city. The last historic references to Tarquinii are from around 1250, and the last remains were destroyed in 1305.
The name of Corneto was changed to Tarquinia in 1922.

Tarquinia National Museum, Tarquinia, Viterbo, Lazio, Italy, Europe

The Tarquinia National Museum is an archaeological museum dedicated to the Etruscan civilization in Tarquinia, Italy. Its collection consists primarily of the artifacts which were excavated from the Necropolis of Monterozzi to the east of the city. It is housed in the Palazzo Vitelleschi. The Palazzo Vitelleschi was built between 1436 and 1439 for the cardinal of Corneto, the former name of Tarquinia. After the cardinal's death the palace was used as stopover for the popes. Over time the Soderini family became its new owner and it was turned into a hotel. In 1900 it was acquired by the city of Tarquinia, which donated it to the Italian state in 1916. The state intended to use the palace for the current museum, which opened in 1924. It was the result of the merger of the Municipal Collection and the private collection of the counts Bruschi-Falgari. Over the time the collection was enriched by the numerous finds from the ancient city of Tarquinia and the Necropolis of Monterozzi. The Palazzo Vitelleschi has three floors. On the ground floor the sarcophagi and other stone artifacts from the middle of the fourth century BC are exhibited in chronological order. The most notable sarcophagi which belonged to the most important Tarquinian families are seen in the tenth room. Some of these were carved from Greek marble. The first floor shows the pottery in chronological order, starting with the Villanovan culture. Both the native Etruscan type of pottery called bucchero and imported pottery is on display here. Pottery dated to the Orientalizing period and onward was imported from Ancient Egypt, Phoenicia and Ancient Greece. Among these ceramics was the Bocchoris vase, which dates from the Ancient Egyptian 24th dynasty. Especially pottery from Corinth was imported in large quantities from the end of the seventh to the sixth century BC and imitated by the Etruscans. Some bronze tableware also dates to the Orientalizing period. After this comes the Attic black-figure and red-figure pottery from the fourth century BC, the Classical period. A collection of Etruscan bronze coins is exhibited in the ballroom. In the same room are later gold coins from the Roman Empire which were found at Gravisca, Tarquinia's ancient harbor, and gold jewelry. The first floor ends with a collection of votive offerings. The second floor is a square porch which offers a view over the city and the countryside. This floor houses some of the restored paintings from the tombs of the Necropolis of Monterozzi. The tombs are the Tomb of the Triclinium, the Tomb of the Bigas, the Tomb of the Olympic Games and the Tomb of the Ship. In the hall of weapons the Cavalli Alati are exhibited, a relief of a pair of winged horses. They once decorated the Ara della Regina, an Etruscan temple in Tarquinia which dates to the fourth century BC.

Vitelleschi Palace, Tarquinia, Viterbo, Lazio, Italy, Europe

The National Archaeological Museum of Tarquinia is located inside Palazzo Vitelleschi, considered one of the major Renaissance buildings of Lazio. Between 1436 and 1439 the cardinal Giovanni Maria Vitelleschi, on a project by Giovanni Dalmata, had the structure built which, after his death, was used as accommodation for the Popes in their pauses at Corneto and, at the beginning of the twentieth century, at Antiquarium. The main door that overlooks Piazza Cavour leads to a large courtyard with an octagonal well in the center. On the ground floor the visitor will be surprised at the sight of two precious sarcophagi, important documents of the funerary sculpture of the III and I century b.C.. The evolution of vascular and Etruscan painting can be traced by visiting, on the first floor, the rich collection of artifacts, from black-figure vases from the 6th century BC C, to the cup with the figures of Elena and Priamo. The second floor houses, instead, the chapel and the Sala delle Armi from where it is possible to take some panoramic photos.
