Tadcaster is a market town and civil parish in the Selby district of North Yorkshire, England. It is approximately 3 miles east of the Great North Road, 12 miles north-east of Leeds, and 10 miles south-west of York.
It is the last town the River Wharfe passes before it joins the River Ouse about 10 miles (16 km) downstream. It is in the shire county of North Yorkshire, although historically split between the Ainsty of York and the West Riding of Yorkshire. The town is twinned with Saint-Chély-d'Apcher in France.
Tadcaster gave its name to a much larger rural district council, Tadcaster Rural District and other administrative areas. This may lead to confusion when comparing the size and extent of the current town with information for earlier periods. For example, the population in 1911 of the Tadcaster sub-district was 6831 compared with that of the Tadcaster Registration District, 32052 (source: A Vision of Britain through time).
Tadcaster has a long association with the brewing industry because of the quality and accessibility of the local water supply. Rich in lime sulphate after filtering through limestone, in the right conditions freshwater springs - known locally as popple-wells - still bubbling up near St Mary's church.
The eleven-arch Tadcaster railway viaduct is 1⁄4-mile (400 m) above the Wharfe bridge; it was built as part of the projected York and North Midland Railway (Leeds Extension) line from Leeds to York. Construction of the line was authorised in 1846, and much of the northern section including the viaduct had been completed when the collapse of railway investment in 1849 led to its abandonment.
Tadcaster Bridge dates back to around 1700. It is the main transport route connecting the town centre, which is divided by the river, and one of the town's two road crossings, the other being the A64 bypass bridge. The bridge partially collapsed on 29 December 2015, following flooding.
Tadcaster is served by local bus services operating from Leeds City bus station. The town is a stop on the Yorkshire Coastliner service, which accesses the Yorkshire Coast. Tadcaster has two main football teams, Tadcaster Albion and Tadcaster Magnets, Tadcaster Rugby Football Club, Tadcaster Harriers running club and Cyclesense Cycling Club.

There are many website and apps available for walking and hiking in Peak District.
Most importantly; mobile phone coverage is poor to none in some area, always have offline maps and back up when planning for long hike.
Most of this places are suitable for family with exception Bamford Edge where extra precaution is necessary. Do not underestimate the wind. I found it surprisingly imbalanced when encountered one where I have avoided standing at the edge of Bamford edge.

Starting at the A1, near Wetherby, we follow the A659 through Boston Spa. Beyond the village, we travel through rolling countryside to reach the brewery town of Tadcaster, on the River Wharfe.

Otley History:
The Wharfedale Valley was carved with the melting of Ice Age glaciers that left behind the dramatic landscapes that surround Otley today – and those landscapes hold the key to Otley’s real age. The Chevin that overlooks the town is home to megalithic stone boundaries and paleolithic rock art that mysteriously comes to life when wet, while a Roman road that crosses its highest points was once an important thoroughfare connecting York, Tadcaster and Ilkley.
As a town Otley has its origins in Saxon times when the name Otho or Otto was added to the old English ‘leah’ meaning a wooded clearing. And today, remnants of that Saxon heritage can be seen in the Parish Church which displays a selection of stone crosses dating from the earliest Christians who came to live here.
Cattle markets began in the town in 1222 defining its future for almost 800 years, and in 1644 the Market Square played host to Oliver Cromwell’s Parliamentarian army on the eve of the Battle of Marston Moor. It’s said they drank the pubs dry before their famous victory and a strong tradition of those pubs lives on today.
With the advent of the Industrial Revolution, a woollen industry began and the 18th and 19th centuries saw much progress, at a time when Otley helped shaped the very history of Britain.
Stone quarried from the Chevin was used to help build the Houses of Parliament; the Wharfedale Printing Press revolutionised the printing industry; and famed cabinetmaker Thomas Chippendale was born in Otley in 1718 and educated locally at Prince Henry’s Grammar School.
As Otley’s fame grew, it began to attract the great and good, with romanticist painter JMW Turner spending much time at nearby Farnley Hall – the dramatic landscapes around Wharfedale were used as backdrop to some of his most famous paintings. The then Lord of the manor, Walter Ramsden Fawkes was closely related to Guy Fawkes.

In this episode we take you with us on our journey over to York. Every story has a beginning, middle and an end. You join us on our Journey from Lancashire to Yorkshire as we head in the Ribble Valley. Traveling past Hurst Green the start and end for the Tolkien trail. Showing you some archive footage from Clitheroe Castle (AKA Windy Castle), Then some even older footage from Pendle hill. Passing through Gisburn with it's cattle Market and into Yorkshire. Passing Skipton with it's Medieval castle. Stopping off at Bolton Abbey to Capture some drone footage of the stunning Bolton Priory.
Before heading over the tops past Harrogate and into Tadcaster, where we stopped for a couple of nights.

Leeds is a city in the northern English county of Yorkshire. On the south bank of the River Aire, the Royal Armouries houses the national collection of arms and artillery. Across the river, the redeveloped industrial area around Call Lane is famed for bars and live music venues under converted railway arches. Leeds Kirkgate Market features hundreds of indoor and outdoor stalls.
Leeds is a local government district of West Yorkshire, England, governed by Leeds City Council, with the status of a city and metropolitan borough. The metropolitan district includes the administrative centre Leeds and the ten towns of Farsley, Garforth, Guiseley, Horsforth, Morley, Otley, Pudsey, Rothwell, Wetherby and Yeadon.
The current city boundaries were set on 1 April 1974 by the provisions of the Local Government Act 1972, as part a reform of local government in England. The city is a merger of eleven former local government districts; the unitary City and County Borough of Leeds combined with the municipal boroughs of Morley and Pudsey, the urban districts of Aireborough, Garforth, Horsforth, Otley and Rothwell, and parts of the rural districts of Tadcaster, Wharfedale and Wetherby from the West Riding of Yorkshire.
For its first 12 years the city had a two-tier system of local government; Leeds City Council shared power with the West Yorkshire County Council. Since the Local Government Act 1985 Leeds City Council has effectively been a unitary authority, serving as the sole executive, deliberative and legislative body responsible for local policy, setting council tax, and allocating budget in the city, and is a member of the Leeds City Region Partnership. Thc City of Leeds is divided into 31 civil parishes and a single unparished area.

The Flintshire Bridge is a cable-stayed bridge spanning the Dee Estuary in North Wales. The bridge links Flint and Connah's Quay to the shore north of the River Dee at the southern end of the Wirral Peninsula. The bridge cost £55million to construct.[1] This cost was met by the then Welsh Office and in the future, maintenance costs are expected to be the responsibility of the local authority Flintshire County Council.
The bridge was officially opened in 1998 by Queen Elizabeth II. It carries part of the A548 road and has been nicknamed 'the bridge to nowhere' as it doesn't link up with the A55 Expressway.
It is the largest asymmetric cable-stayed bridge in the whole of Britain

SELBY PARISH #72: TADCASTER
Tadcaster is a market town located in the far Northwestern corner of the Selby district, lying some 3 miles East of the Great North Road and 10 miles Southwest of York.
It’s a town which has had historical importance from Roman times onward, thanks to it being a major crossing point of the River Wharfe until 1978 when the Tadcaster bypass was built
Tadcaster’s Roman name is Calcaria, deriving from the Latin word for “lime”. It was named as such thanks to the underlying limestone in the area we learned about in Stutton with Hazelwood
The modern name is partially derived from the Latin word “castra” meaning “fort”. Tadcaster likely means “Tata's fort”, named after an unknown Anglo-Saxon landowner.
Industrially, quarrying has always been important around here, but Tadcaster is known mainly for brewing these days. There are three breweries in the town, one of which is the oldest in Yorkshire
The brewery in question is also the only remaining independent brewery in the town. A fourth brewery used to stand close to the banks of the River Wharfe
Speaking of the Wharfe, thanks to its position on the banks of the river, parts of the town adjacent to Tadcaster bridge are prone to flooding, although flood risk management schemes are ongoing
And it’s twinned with St Chely d’Apcher in France, so let's see if there's any French flair here!

River Wharfe - Yorkshire Dales, UK
The River Wharfe is a river in Yorkshire, England. For much of its length, it is the county boundary between West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire.
Its valley is known as Wharfedale. The river source is at Beckermonds in Langstrothdale in the Yorkshire Dales National Park and flows through Kettlewell, Grassington, Bolton Abbey, Addingham, Ilkley, Burley-in-Wharfedale, Otley, Wetherby and Tadcaster. It then flows into the River Ouse near Cawood. The section of the river from its source to around Addingham is in Upper Wharfedale and has a very different character to the river downstream.
The Wharfe is 65 miles long before it joins the Ouse making it the 21st longest river in Britain. It is public navigation from the weir at Tadcaster to its junction with the Ouse near Cawood and is tidal from Ulleskelf to the Ouse.

We had the privilege and honor of taking a walk through the little alleys of York, England with a truly great tour guide, Warwick Burton of YORKWALK. His native knowledge and sense of humor made this an wonderful experience. We walked through tiny lanes that most visitors would miss, but this became the highlight of the city for us. Thank you Warwick.
After strolling through countless little lanes, we have a look at the Shambles in the narrow, quaint shopping lane becomes crowded during the day but was nearly empty when we walked through in late afternoon. The Shambles is so narrow they say it's possible for neighbors to reach out across the street from their second-story homes and shake hands. You'll probably come back to it several times as you wander through the town, but you will find the best time to enjoy the Shambles and get an uncluttered photo is early morning or evening, when the shops are closed and the crowd is absent.
Warwick will be greatly missed by his many friends and former travellers, but the company he founded 30 years ago, YORKWALKS, will continue providing a rich variety of walking and coach tours in York and the surroundings.
