Currency

Britain’s currency is the pound sterling (£), which is divided into 100 pence (p).

Scotland has its own pound sterling notes. These represent the same value as an English note and can be used elsewhere in Britain. The Scottish £1 note is not accepted outside Scotland.

There are lots of bureaux de change in Britain – often located inside:

• banks
• travel agents
• Post Offices
• airports
• major train stations.

It's worth shopping around to get the best deal and remember to ask how much commission is charged.

Time Difference
During the winter months, Britain is on Greenwich Mean Time (GMT), which is 5 hours ahead of Eastern Standard Time and 10 hours behind Sydney. Western standard time is five hours behind.

From late March until late October, the clocks go forward one hour to British Summer Time (BST).

To check the correct time, contact the Speaking Clock service by dialling 123.

Weight And Measurements

Britain is officially metric, in line with the rest of Europe. However, imperial measures are still in use, especially for road distances, which are measured in miles. Imperial pints and gallons are 20 per cent larger than US measures.

Imperial to Metric
1 inch = 2.5 centimetres
1 foot = 30 centimetres
1 mile = 1.6 kilometres
1 ounce = 28 grams
1 pound = 454 grams
1 pint = 0.6 litres
1 gallon = 4.6 litres

Metric to Imperial
1 millimetre = 0.04 inch
1 centimetre = 0.4 inch
1 metre = 3 feet 3 inches
1 kilometre = 0.6 mile
1 gram = 0.04 ounce
1 kilogram = 2.2 pounds

Passport And Visas Requirements To Enter The UK

Please note: Following the recent referendum vote for the UK to leave the European Union (EU), there are currently no changes in the way people travel to Britain. The following guidelines still apply:

If you're planning an adventure to the UK, depending on your nationality and your reason for visiting, you may need to organise a visa.

If you're an American, Canadian or Australian tourist, you'll be able to travel visa-free throughout the UK, providing you have a valid passport and your reason for visiting meets the immigration rules (link is external).

Citizens from some South American and Caribbean countries as well as Japan are also able to travel visa-free around the UK.

European Union citizens, non-EU member states of the EEA (Norway, Liechtenstein and Iceland), Switzerland, and members of the Overseas Countries and Territories (OCT) do not need a visa to enter the UK.

If you have any further visa questions visit the official UK government website.

Loughborough Canal Walk - British Canals VIDEO TOUR (Leicestershire, UK)

Doing the Loughborough Canal Walk!

A waterside walk from Loughborough to Leicester along a section of the Grand Union Canal and the River Soar. It's about a 13 mile route, so it's possible to do in a day. At the end of the walk you can get the train directly back to Loughborough from Leicester.
The walk starts on the canal just to the east of the train station. You can access the towpath from Moor Lane Bridge and then follow it south east towards the village of Barrow Upon Soar.

The route continues through the lovely Soar Valley to Mountsorrel and Syston, where you pass through Watermead Country Park. It's a real highlight on the route with 12 lakes, wildflower meadows, woodland, grassland and reedbeds. Look out for a whole host of wildlife on this section of the walk.

The final section takes you through Birstall and Belgrave, before finishing at Abbey Park in Leicester. It's a lovely finish to the walk with the attractive park including formal gardens, a sensory garden, a boating lake, a model boat lake, a miniature railway and pretty bridge over the River Soar.

Glenfield Tunnel Tour with LIHS - Heritage Open Days

On Saturday the 15th of September as part of the Heritage Open Days event I took a trip deep below the streets of Leicester into the Robert Stevenson designed Glenfield railway tunnel with Bill Pemberton of the Leicestershire Industrial History Society.
We donned our hi-viz jackets and after a safety briefing from our tour guide headed into the brick lined semi-darkness of the tunnel.
as our eyes became accustomed to the darkness we where shown ventilation shafts transporting sunlight and air from above into the subterranean space which remained at a constant 10 degrees Celsius throughout.
Our guide then pointed out numbers on the wall written by the workers and marking distances from the tunnel mouth, moving further into the tunnel we where shown another ventilation shaft which like many of its duplicates along the tunnel length is situated in a private garden on the surface.
As we ventured deeper into the tunnel we passed numerous refuges (small archways in the tunnel wall) used by railway workers to avoid trains traveling through the tunnel.
After coming to a point 400 yards in, the lights where switched off and a ARGO TRANSACORD recording of a Midland '2.F' class 0-6-0 traveling through the very tunnel we where now stood in was played, the vinyl recording of which I had with me and a short extract of can be heard at the beginning and end of my film.

Syston Leicestershire 7th November 2013

Hugh and Arthur pay a visit to Syston, just South of Leicester to have a look at what the old Midland Main Line has to offer. There is a triangular junction at Syston with the line to Melton Mowbray, that along with the station itself, now a single platform signaled for bi-directional running make for a few interesting movements. Hugh has yet to see a class 70 in the flesh and we knew that there was at least one class 70 movement scheduled through Syston that day. There was and it went round the triangle furthest away from us so Hugh got his class 70 'kop', well about half a loco really. To save his blushes I have edited out this bit of video!
