Raatteenportti and Winter War Monument
Raatteen tie is a famous location for the extraordinary military maneuvers of the Finnish soldiers during the Winter War. Exhibition of Raatteen Portti interpretates the course of the battle through the eyes of both parties. Thousands of young men had to suffer the battle in sub-humane conditions - frozen to the core and undernourished. Today a stonefield with 17 000 stones emmemorate the sufferings of the fallen men. The 105 copper bells of the Monument inside the stonefield symbolize the duration of the Winter War. On the road from Suomussalmi to Raate you can find war memorials. On the bank of Purasjoki there are renovated trenches. Next to the border region there is Vartiomuseo - a renovated house of border guards.

Winter War Trenches: Along the Raate Road, Suomussalmi, Finland
On our recent pilgrimage to Finland, my daughter and I visited these trench-works along the Raate Road near Suomussalmi, a reconstructed element of Finland's Winter War (1939-40) with the USSR. These trenches were initially overrun by the Soviets, then retaken by the Finns as they decimated the under-prepared and ill-equipped Red Army troops in what is often referred to as a frozen hell of white death.
