The Loire Valley, is located in the middle stretch of the Loire River in central France, in both the administrative regions Pays de la Loire and Centre-Val de Loire.
The area of the Loire Valley comprises about 800 square kilometres.
It is referred to as the Cradle of the French and the Garden of France due to the abundance of vineyards, fruit orchards (such as cherries), and artichoke, and asparagus fields, which line the banks of the river.
Notable for its historic towns, architecture, and wines, the valley has been inhabited since the Middle Palaeolithic period.
The climate is favorable most of the year, the river often acting as a line of demarcation in France's weather between the northern climate and the southern.
The river has a significant effect on the mesoclimate of the region, adding a few degrees of temperature.
The climate can be cool with springtime frost while wine harvest months may have rain.
Summers are hot; however, influences from the Atlantic moderate the temperature with breezes.
The Loire Valley wine region is one of the world's most well-known areas of wine production and includes several French wine regions situated along the river from the Muscadet region on the Atlantic coast to the regions of Sancerre and Pouilly-Fumé just southeast of the city of Orléans in north central France.
Loire wines tend to exhibit a characteristic fruitiness with fresh, crisp flavors.
The châteaux, numbering more than three hundred, represent a nation of builders starting with the necessary castle fortifications in the 10th century to the splendour of those built half a millennium later.
When the French kings began constructing their huge châteaux here, the nobility, not wanting or even daring to be far from the seat of power, followed suit.
Their presence in the lush, fertile valley began attracting the very best landscape designers.
In addition to its many châteaux, the cultural monuments illustrate to an exceptional degree the ideals of the Renaissance and the Age of the Enlightenment on western European thought and design.
Many of the châteaux were designed to be built on the top of hills, one example of this is the Château d'Amboise.
The only château to have been built in the riverbed is the Château de Montsoreau.
Many of the châteaux had extremely detailed and expensive churches on the grounds, or within the actual château itself.
On December 2, 2000, UNESCO added the central part of the river valley, between Chalonnes-sur-Loire and Sully-sur-Loire, to its list of World Heritage Sites.

The medieval castle of Sully sur Loire, Loire Valley Chateau, France
The castle of Sully sur Loire is one of the lesser known chateaux in the Loire Valley of France. But the reason why we liked it was because it was the most medieval castle we visited. It still has a fortress look with big towers, machicolation and a moat.
A medieval fortress in the Loire Valley or a medieval castle in the Loire Valley is not very common because most castles in the Loire Valley are Renaissance castles. Although the castle of Sully sur Loire does have a Renaissance wing, it is mostly a French medieval castle.
This video on the castle of Sully sur Loire is one of eight videos in our series about the castles of the Loire Valley. If you want to see the videos of the other chateaux of the Loire valley, we have a playlist dedicated to the chateaux of the Loire Valley of France.

Château de Sully-sur-Loire • A Moated Fortress in the Loire Valley France
Château de Sully-sur-Loire - A Moated Fortress in the Loire Valley France. During our cruise we visit Château de Sully-sur-Loire, a moated fortress and 'monument historique'. The Château de Sully-sur-Loire is a castle, converted to a palatial seigneurial residence, situated in the commune of Sully-sur-Loire, Loiret, France.
The castle originally belonged to Georges de la Trémoïlle, who infuriated Joan of Arc by encouraging the Dauphin to devote himself to idle hunting in the forests around Sully. After Joan's failure to liberate Paris in 1430, de la Trémoïlle imprisoned her in the castle. In the 18th century, Voltaire, exiled from Paris, also spent time at the château.
The château of Sully-sur-Loire is a superb example of a medieval fortress with its high towers and moats. The moats are still full of water diverted from the Sange River. It was built at the end of the 14th century on a site which has dominated one of the few crossing points of the River Loire. The keep, dating from 1400, has one of the finest chestnut roofs anywhere along the Loire. The carpentry of the garrets is a work of art by master carpenters of the Orléans region.
The most famous of the château's proprietors was the first Duke of Sully (1559-1641), who was the Grand Minister to King Henri IV. The castle remained in the Sully family for four centuries. The young Louis XIV and his mother Anne of Austria took refuge here in 1652 as they fled the insurrection. Voltaire was exiled here in 1719 for his immoderate taste for satire. Today, exhibitions and theme entertainment are held here each year, as well as a music festival.

The castle dates back to the 15th century and has been owned by the same family, the Blacas d'Aulps, for over 200 years. It is built in a Renaissance and medieval architectural style, with a distinctive blend of fortress and palace features.
Ussé Castle features several towers, beautiful gardens, and a moat. It is surrounded by forested grounds, adding to its romantic and enchanting atmosphere. The interior of the castle is also well-preserved, with elegant period furnishings, tapestries, and art.
Visitors to Ussé Castle can explore its many rooms, including the Grand Salon, which is known for its intricately carved woodwork and ceiling paintings. There is also a museum within the castle that showcases the history and heritage of the building and its owners.
Ussé Castle is a popular tourist attraction, drawing visitors from around the world who are interested in its history, architecture, and connection to fairy tales. It offers guided tours and hosts various events throughout the year, including medieval festivals and special exhibitions.
Overall, Ussé Castle is a must-visit destination for those looking to experience the charm and magic of the Loire Valley and indulge in the romanticism of fairy tales.
