Touring the Outer Hebrides, Isles of Barra and Vatersay - Part 1
This video is filmed in 4K and is part of a series touring the beautiful Outer Hebrides, Scotland in our little white motorhome.
In Part 1 we start our journey from Oban, taking the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry to Castlebay, Barra. Our first campsite is Borve Camping and Caravan site and it's from here we start to explore the Isles of Barra and Vatersay.
In Part 2 - we move on to Scurrival Campsite, at the other end of the Isle of Barra and discover more beautiful beaches and of course the famous Barra Airport, which has been on our bucket list for a long time. This airport is unique and believed to be the only airport in the world where scheduled flights use a tidal beach as the runway. It is a great spot to watch the flights take off and land on the sandy beach.
In Part 3 - We take a ferry to the Uists and Berneray, where we stay at two different campsites, Moorcroft Holidays and Balranald Campsite, plus a fantastic park-up next to an incredible beach on Berneray.
In Parts 4 & 5 - We explore the Isle of Harris where we stay at Pairc Niseaboist campsite, then treat ourselves to a week's stay in an apartment with stunning views overlooking Luskentyre beach, you seriously do not want to miss this, what an amazing place!
Finally, Part 6 - We move on to the Isle of Lewis before catching the ferry back to the mainland.

We're spending the next few days exploring Scotlands largest island and trying to find the best things to do in Lewis and Harris. We took a tour in England with Rabbies last year also and loved it. So we're back to check out a new country all together. Watch last years series here —
Safe to say that Scotland has completely blown us away - the Isle of Lewis and Harris is stunning! It's a shame more people don't get out to Lewis and Harris when they travel to Scotland though and focus on Isle of Skye instead.
This is our first time in Scotland so all we had to go by was the experience of friends, we'd been told it was going to shock us in the best way possible. They were right. The beaches in Lewis and Harris would probably be considered the best thing to do in our book, not only are they covered in white sand, long and beautiful but they remind us a lot of New Zealand.

Lewis is the northern part of Lewis and Harris, the largest island of the Western Isles or Outer Hebrides. The total area of Lewis is 683 square miles. As both parts of the island are frequently referred to as if they were separate islands, Lewis is known as the Isle of Lewis.
Lewis is, in general, the lower-lying part of the island: the other part, Harris, is more mountainous. Due to its flatter, more fertile land, Lewis contains three-quarters of the population of the Western Isles, and the largest settlement, Stornoway. The island's diverse habitats are home to an assortment of flora and fauna, such as the golden eagle, red deer and seal, and are recognised in a number of conservation areas.
Lewis has a Presbyterian tradition and a rich history. It was once part of the Norse Kingdom of Mann and the Isles. Today, life is very different from elsewhere in Scotland, with Sabbath observance, the Gaelic language and peat cutting retaining more importance than elsewhere. Lewis has a rich cultural heritage as can be seen from its myths and legends as well as the local literary and musical traditions.

The principal capes are the Butt of Lewis, in the extreme north, with hundred foot (30 m) cliffs (the high point is 142 ft (43 m) high) and crowned with a lighthouse, the light of which is visible for 19 miles (31 km); Tolsta Head, Tiumpan Head and Cabag Head, on the east; Renish Point, in the extreme south; and, on the west, Toe Head and Gallon Head. The largest island associated with Lewis is Bernera or Great Bernera in the district of Uig and is linked to the mainland of Lewis by a bridge opened in 1953.
A daily Caledonian MacBrayne ferry (MV Loch Seaforth) sails from Stornoway to Ullapool on the Scottish mainland, taking 2 hours 30 minutes connecting Lewis with the mainland. Lewis has a linguistic heritage rooted in Scottish Gaelic and Old Norse, which both continue to influence life in Lewis.

Just over 6,000 people live in the town, which represents about a third of the Islands total population. The town has a wide range of facilities ranging from a large secondary school, (Nicholson Institute) and technical college, to sporting facilities, which includes a brand new sports complex. The complex would be the envy of most mainland small cities with its 25 metre pool, climbing walls, fitness suite, soft play etc.
The town also has a Golf Course, Astro Turf pitch, Go-Karting and even a paintball action area. Cruises around the area by boat are available during the summer months, embarking from the pontoons behind the Lifeboat Station. Cultural facilities are well catered for with a good museum, art gallery and library. An Lanntair, a brand new arts complex was opened in summer 2005.

Arnish Light was built in 1852, according to documents, and is the Northern Lighthouse Board's first ever prefabricated tower.
The site at Arnish posed a challenge to the board because it was located a long way from Stornoway, through rocky moorland, and several miles from the Scottish mainland, making it difficult to find a contractor willing to take on the project. Only one tender for a masonry tower, costing £513, was found after four tenders for an iron tower were submitted, ranging from £235 to £420.
Alan Stevenson, a member of the exceptional Stevenson engineering family that also produced novelist Robert Louis Stevenson, was entrusted with the design and construction. The preference was for an iron tower, which resulted in a pillar of iron plates connected together and lined with wood. The lantern, on the other hand, was not lined, and it was said to be extremely frigid in the winter.
Arnish's facility was also distinctive in another sense. The Stevensons had been developing a 'apparent light,' a new technique of lighting pierheads and buried rocks, for some time. Many hazards were designated at the time by beacons, which were essentially seamarks with no warning light or sound. Glass prisms put in the beacon and lighted by a beam projected from a nearby coast produced a light that looked to come from the beacon itself, according to the Stevensons.
This innovative concept was tested on the rock shelf off Arnish Point, and the Stornoway fishermen characterised it as ...the illusion is so great that we cannot believe a light isn't there. When the main Arnish light was first shown in 1852, the beacon was initially 'lighted' and continued in service for the next fifty years.
Arnish quickly became a popular destination for seafarers. A 'lighthouse, painted white, stands on the eastern horn of Arnish Point, on the western side of the entrance to the harbour; and from an elevation of 56 feet above high water is exhibited a revolving white light, which attains its greatest brilliancy every half minute,' according to the 1867 'Sailing Directions' for the east coast of Lewis. In clear weather, the light should be visible from a distance of 12 miles. 'From the Lighthouse, a lodge or rock dries out at low water N.E. nearly a cable,' the document continues. 'A lodge or rock dries out at low water N.E. nearly a cable from the Lighthouse, on the south-east point of which is a black conical beacon 32 feet high, surmounted by a prism, which reflects a light from a window in the lower part of the tower,' the document continues. This reflected light appears to be a first-magnitude star and can be seen from seaward between bearings N. by W. and W. by N.'
When it comes to Arnish's dates, there is some ambiguity. Arnish light initially appeared in 1852, according to legend. The iron-framed tower is seen on a little sketch of the 'Light on Arnish Point' on an Admiralty chart of Stornoway Harbour from 1846.
The building was manned until 1963 when the keeper was replaced by an automatic light, but the beacon continued until 1971 when it was destroyed by a gale and replaced by a buoy.

After spending just over 2 weeks undertaking a Scotland Road Trip in the summer of 2020 - just as the country was coming out of lock down, I have some ideas of what would be the best places to visit in Scotland for a UK staycation 2021.

10. Tour a distillery and taste whisky (we toured Abhainn Dearg on the Isle of Lewis)

8. Explore the Fairy Glen on the Isle of Skye
7. Hike Stac Pollaidh (On the NC500)
6. Wander up to the Bone Caves in the Assynt (on the NC500)
5. Conquer Ben Nevis
4. Take a boat trip (we took one from Ullapool - on the NC500 and another one from Stornoway in the Outer Hebrides)
3. Eat Seafood (I highly recommend the Oyster Shed on the Isle of Skye, the Seafood Shack in Ullapool/NC500, and Sam's Seafood Shack on the Isle of Harris)
2. Isle of Harris Beaches - notably Luskentyre Beach, Seilebost and the estuary between the two
