Businesses and Mining in the North West

Famous and popular centres in the North West are the following:
Sun City
Sun City is one of the world's biggest entertainment centres - a whole city on its own. There is a casino, an 18-hole golf course, theatres and concert halls, beaches and even a wave pool at the Valley of the Waves. Sun City also encompasses a fantastically reconstructed tropical rainforest - a wonderful experience for tourists. There are a number of world-class hotels that include the remarkable Palace of the Lost City.
Pilanesberg National Park
Pilanesberg is an ideal and exciting safari destination, situated in the crater of an extinct volcano, close to the cities of Pretoria and Johannesburg. It has some great game viewing and affordable accommodation. Owing to its rare rock types and structure, Pilanesberg rates high amongst the world's outstanding geological phenomena.
Hartbeespoort Dam
Another of the province's popular attractions is Hartbeespoort Dam, located in the heart of the Magaliesburg, this area is known for its fun times and leisure activities. Here tourists can enjoy a range of water sports and general activities from fishing, canoeing, paragliding, hangliding to hot-air ballooning.
Madikwe Game Reserve
Madikwe Game Reserve is one of South Africa's prime safari destinations with the park home to over 60 large mammal species and includes the Big Five. The endangered Wild Dog can be found at this reserve which is also famous for its African Wild Dog research. A perfect holiday for birdwatchers, Madikwe has approximately 300 resident and migrant bird species.
World Heritage Sites in North West
Two of South Africa’s UNESCO World Heritage sites are located in the North West province:
The Taung Skull Fossil Site where the Taung Skull was found in 1924. Other fossils found here go back as far as 4.5 million years, with the site receiving international recognition.
The Vredefort Dome is the oldest meteorite impact structure on Earth, which is estimated to date back over 2 million years.

S1 – Ep 490 – Op-die-Berg, Eselbank, Wupperthal, Western Cape!
Our journey to these three settlements was truly exhilarating. Firstly, we faced a 35-minute wait at a stop-and-go before ascending the spectacular Gydo Pass. Op-die-Berg was an unexpected stop; we had never even heard of the place until that morning, so we decided to make a quick visit. The drive through the Cederberg to reach Eselbank and Wupperthal was incredible, offering breathtaking views and stunning scenery. Eselbank is a tiny, isolated village with an amazing location. In contrast, Wupperthal was quite impressive as we descended the mountain. Its rich history captivated us, and we thoroughly enjoyed exploring it. STERKFONTEIN CAVES - A WORLD HERITAGE SITE, Johannesburg, South Africa Tourism
An hour’s drive from Johannesburg and Pretoria, the Sterkfontein Caves are world famous for their fossil finds and a well-known visitor destination. The Sterkfontein Caves site is home to a top restaurant, conferencing facilities, easy access to the caves themselves, modern walkways and a boardwalk past the excavation site where world-acclaimed fossils have been discovered.
The tours at the Sterkfontein Caves, which start above ground and then take visitors deep into the caves, run every half hour, seven days a week.
Within the Sterkfontein Caves, scientists have discovered many hominid and other animal fossils, dating back more than 4-million years, to the birth of humanity. The most important and most famous of these fossils are “Mrs Ples”, a 2.1-million-year-old Australopithecus skull, and “Little Foot”, an almost complete Australopithecus skeleton that is more than 3-million years old. These fossils, both found in the Sterkfontein Caves in the Cradle of Humankind, tell us much about the precursors of modern humans, Homo sapien
The Sterkfontein Caves, situated in the Cradle of Humankind, represent one of the world's richest fossil sites, and discoveries there continue to astound the international scientific community. Here is a collection of sometimes surprising facts about the caves.
In the late 1890s gold miners dynamited the Sterkfontein caves in search of limestone which they converted into the quick lime required for processing gold. Their explosions revealed entrances to the cave system.Around 2.5-billion years ago, the area now known as the Cradle was a shallow inland sea.
An estimated 40% of all the world's human ancestor fossils have been found in the Cradle.The Cradle of Humankind World Heritage Site has become a major international tourism destination with close to 400 tourism attractions, including 91 graded establishments.

I recently went on a trip to South Africa with my boyfriend Ako and we stayed 3 nights at Ukutula Conservation Center & Logde in Johannesburg. We got to meet Lions, Hyenas, Cheetahs from all ages. It truly was a once in a lifetime experience. I'd highly recommend this place and can't wait to go back as a volunteer!
