History
Soddy-Daisy is an incorporated city, comprising the former Tennessee cities of Soddy and Daisy. It has frequently been noted on lists of unusual place names.[7]

Soddy-Daisy was home to Hamilton County's first courthouse and government seat, Poe's Tavern.[8] The tavern, built in 1819, was the home of Soddy-Daisy resident Hasten Poe. In 1838, the tavern served as a way station for 1,900 Cherokees who were on the Trail of Tears. During the Civil War, Poe's Tavern served as a hospital for both Union and Confederate troops.[9] Though the original Poe's Tavern was torn down in 1911, the city of Soddy Daisy has reconstructed a replica of the building a block away from the original site.[10]

There are two popular stories about how the city of Soddy got its name. The first is that the word Soddy is an anglicization of Tsati, a shorter form of the Cherokee word ᎠᏂ ᎫᏌᏘ Ᏹ (Ani-Kusati-yi), referring to the Muskogean Koasati people who lived there in the 18th century prior to Cherokee migration to the area after 1776. The second theory is that Soddy was named for William Sodder, who ran a trading post in the city. Others claim that Soddy's name is a reference to Soddy Creek, which is believed to have originated from the Cherokee word Sauta, which is derived from Echota. Soddy was a very small town until the Soddy Coal Company began mining in 1867.

Daisy is rumored to have taken its name from Daisy Parks, the daughter of Thomas Parks.[11] Thomas Parks was Vice-President of the Tabler-Cleudup Coal & Coke Company, and founded the Daisy Coal Company in April 1881.[12]

The two cities incorporated in April 1969 along a 9-mile (14 km) stretch of U.S. 27.[13]

Geography
Soddy-Daisy is located in north-central Hamilton County at 35°15′31″N 85°10′37″W (35.258538, -85.176996).[14] Its southwestern end is bordered by the city of Chattanooga. Unincorporated communities that border Soddy-Daisy are Middle Valley to the south, Falling Water to the southwest, Mowbray Mountain to the west and Flat Top Mountain to the northwest. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 23.4 square miles (60.7 km2), of which 22.6 square miles (58.6 km2) are land and 0.81 square miles (2.1 km2), or 3.51%, are water.

The city is situated at the base of the Cumberland Escarpment, the east face of Walden Ridge, which is part of the Cumberland Plateau. An inlet of Chickamauga Lake (consisting of the lower part of Soddy Creek) lies to the east. U.S. Route 27 is the city's main highway, connecting it with Chattanooga 16 miles (26 km) to the south and Dayton 22 miles (35 km) to the northeast. State Route 111, which crosses Walden Ridge and leads 17 miles (27 km) northwest to Dunlap, intersects US-27 in the northern part of the city.

BLUE HOLE IN SODDY DAISY, TN. **BIG SODDY CREEK GULF

A blue hole is a natural spring that constantly flows. They are one of those wonders of nature that I think are just beautiful. I was on the search for waterfalls and places to swim in Tennessee and I ran across this place. I went to check it out and fell in love!! While there aren't big water falls, the creek has some smallish ones along the way that give you that rushing water sound that is soothing. To top it off there are several blue holes along the way. The favorite seems to be the one with the beachy area where you can just walk down into the water. It is always nice and cool! The water is so clear you can literally see to the bottom. The rocks are smoothed by the water running over them and just beautiful. If you are ever around the Chattanooga, TN area or live there, you have to check it out. It is totally free and is very well kept. I hope you enjoy this video and follow along with us on our Groovy Journey by Subscribing to our page. Thumbs up and comment to let us know what you think.

Best Trail In Chattanooga, TN? | Hiking Civil War HISTORIC Cravens House To Sunset Rock

Used by the confederates in 1863 to track Union troops, today we hike to Sunset rock from Cravens House. This trail is located on lookout mountain near Chattanooga, Tennessee. According to many locals, this is one of the very best hiking trails in the region. Halfway through and on, it provides many areas for bouldering and rock climbing.

But not only are the epic rockfaces and phenomenal summit view what make this trek great, but also the fascinating civil war history. Which I cover a bit in the video.

This area of lookout mountain hosted the Battle Above the Clouds during the civil war. It is also part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military State Park.

In the Hiking Epic Trails series, we find the coolest landmarks on each hiking trail and give them a name. However, some of them already have a name. In order, the landmarks in this video are Pennsylvania & Illinois Civil War Monuments, Big Momma, Cravens Wall, Witches Hut, and Sunset Rock.

Located on the northwest side of Lookout Mountain, Sunset Rock is a popular trailhead and tourist stop. It is part of the Chickamauga and Chattanooga Military State Park, the largest and oldest Civil War national park.[5][6] Once known as Point Lookout, Sunset Rock provides a view of the Tennessee River, Signal Mountain and Prentice Cooper State Forest.[7][8] The 100-foot cliff and moderate temperatures invite heavy traffic for its many climbing routes, which were completed in 1960. Sunset Rock is mainly sandstone, making for easier routing and climbing. Route development continued through the 1960s and 1970s. In the 1980s, routers pushed the grades ever higher. Climbing here is especially popular in the autumn months due to cooler weather.[9]

Sunset Rock is attractive to Civil War enthusiasts due to its history; it has a Tennessee Historical Commission Marker at the head of the trail, describing its Civil War battle history. Confederate Generals Braxton Bragg and James Longstreet[10] used Sunset Rock as a lookout in 1863 where they were able to track the movement of the Union troops as they entered Lookout Valley. It is claimed that, unknown to Longstreet, the Union troops could see him on Sunset Rock from the valley, where they were able to decipher the Confederate code, giving them the ability to anticipate the next moves of the Confederates.[11] This resulted in the Battle of Wauhatchie, in which the Confederate army attempted to remove the Union forces from the river and block their supply lines. The attempt was unsuccessful; with the consequence that the Union forces were able to lay siege to Chattanooga.

Hey y'all! We're Chris + Sara (or as you know us, Let’s Be Us), a husband and wife digital nomad travel duo currently working and traveling full time with our pup, Kramer. We've always dreamed of traveling full time, and in May of 2018 we took the leap and made it happen! Today we're balancing work and fun everywhere between the Pacific and Atlantic. From hiking and cycling to tacos and coffee, we're trying to see and experience as much of this world as we can! While our home is currently on wheels in our DIY Sprinter van, our travels take us all around the world.

North Chickamauga Creek Hiking | Cumberland Trail near Chattanooga - USA road trip & travel vlog

North Chickamauga Creek Hiking in Soddy Daisy, TN

We hiked about 2.5 miles (5 miles out and back) of the North Chickamauga Creek portion of the Cumberland Trail (see link below for map and details). It was an incredible hike featuring many great views, waterfalls, cliffs, an other natural features. Even though we only completed about one-eighth of the full trail, I would even venture to say that this hike was comparable, if not better, than many of the hikes I have done in the National Parks. 10/10 recommend.
