Did you know the there are secret places in the United States? Actually, there are more than a few. There are even some that really aren't there. Conspiracy types still think they are, but they aren't. Most seem to be in the desert where land is cheap and casinos are close. I mean if you are going to buy a house it might as well be near aliens and a good casino, right?
This video is about some secret facilities the united states has had over the years.
If you enjoy these videos I would love to hear about it. These videos are made to help people who are thinking about relocating, looking for real estate, or just wanting to learn about the United States. We look at the best and worst cities, states, towns, and neighborhoods in the United States. But, most of the time focus on the negative side of locations. If you only want some happy positive information about a city, town or state, I would suggest looking up local mortgage and real estate companies or maybe the locations website. They are trying to sell you something so it will be nothing but sunshine and rainbows. They won't tell you about crime, poverty, bail bondsmen, or insurance you'll need because of natural disasters. I will. And I will try and make it entertaining.

Encounter Gary Snyder at Malakoff Diggings
“Come let’s go see some mountains,” says Gary.
Where?
“You’ll see. Let’s go.”
I cut up some apples and cheese, fill up my gigantic tea flask, and go outside. The sun is shining on trees. The sky is so blue. We all stand still, take a few deep breaths and take in the beauty.
Steve opens his Honda Fit for Gary.
“Where are we going? To see your old friends?” I ask again, remembering Gary mentioned yesterday that he’d like to take us visiting friends.
“A historical place,” he smiles.
He guides Steve along the Sierra ridge. There was a week of rain on the mountains a few days ago, and life is absorbing the precious gift and returning it with colorful leaves and birds, hung on white and red cliffs. The forest smells like perfume.
“Why is the soil so white and red?”
“Because it’s rich with minerals. You shall see, Ping.”
We arrive at a small town. The first thing we see is cannons along the street, hugged by small cabins. In the middle, a white building. Steve parks. We walk out. I read the sign: Malakoff Diggings.
So this is California’s famous gold rush site, where panning was invented, using mercury. The water cannons were also invented to blast the rocks off the mountains for panning. The gold rush destroyed the mountains and rivers, and drove the Native Hill Nisenan to near extinction.
A young ranger leans on the door, deep frowns wedged between his young eyebrows. He looks kind and serious. “Welcome to Malakoff Diggings. The Museum is closed. But you’re welcome to come in and take a look at the front room. The parking is $10.”
Only Steve has cash. He goes in to pay, and I start taking photos. The ranger comes out.
“Where are the Nisenans these days?”
He smiles, deeper frowns between his eyes. “They’re around. That’s why I’m still here, to help them apply for the recognition from the government.”
“Do you have some native…?”
He shakes his head. “I’m not sure. I have French, German and Irish in me. I’d like to do some DNA tests. I’m applying for a master program from the State U. Nobody wants to stay here, no entertainment, no restaurant, hardly any internet. I came here two years ago, thinking just a month, at most three months, as an intern…Now I’m still here. I’ve surprised myself. I guess I’m influenced by Alan Watts and Gary Snyder, their thoughts and poetry.”
I look at Gary, eyes half closed, absorbing everything and nothing.
“What’s your name? Have you read Han Shan poems?”
“Call me Colt, colt as young horse. Ah, Han Shan poems, of course, my favorites, part of the reasons why I’m still here.”
Steve laughs. Gary laughs. I point to Gary, laughing. “Colt, do you know who he is?”
He scratches his head. “He looks familiar, but no, I never met him.”
“Lie. You met him every time you read Han Shan poems. He’s Gary Snyder.”
Colt freezes. He stares. He chuckles. He looks at Gary, Steve, me, at the mountains around us. “Gary Snyder, Snyder, impossible! You’re not pulling my legs, are you?”
We all start laughing like crazy, including Colt, including the forest, startling birds that have settled to their nests.
“I guess after I retire, I’ve just faded away, into the mountains,” says Gary.
I can’t stop laughing. “Can you say it again?” I turn on the phone to record this scene.
Colt hands his phone to Steve and gestures him to take some photos with Gary. Then he gazes at Gary, shaken by the encounter. Gary smiles:
“Why don’t you come and visit me at Kitkitdizze sometimes? I’m not far from here.”
“I will, I will, I will,” Colt stammers.
Gary laughs. “Well, got some paper? I’ll write down my address for you. Please call before you show up, will you, young man?”
“Oh yes, oh yes, inside, on my desk,” he says, turns and almost trips himself on the threshold. We all go in, and watch Gary write down his phone number and address.
Colt remains speechless, bows to Gary, and watches him walk out with Steve, to his car.
“You’ll visit him soon, right? You know you don’t get this kind of miracle every day, right?”
He nods, still wide eyed, speechless.
“When you call, please don’t hang up after 3, 4, 5 rings. He moves a bit slower these days. So just keep ringing until he picks up, ok?”
He nods and comes out with me.
“Where did you get this fossil tree?” I point to a giant stump in front of the building. It lies there haphazardly, with moss growing in folds, mud and old leaves stuck in cracks.
“Fossil? Where?” His eyes still on Gary, who's stepping into the car.
“Here, right in front of you.” I touch the tree.
“This, fossil tree? It can’t be.”
I laugh, placing his hand on the tree. “Try to move it.”
“Wow, it’s heavy as a boulder. How could this be? It really looks like an old tree stump! Nobody ever paid attention to it.
“I guess it’s as real as Gary Snyder, as this present, this moment of encountering.”
He laughs, mouth wide open to the mountains, all the frowns between his eyebrows open up.

Top 10 National Parks!
UPDATE: We now have been to Alaska and visited 2 national parks (Kenai Fjords and Denali). Where would they fall on the list? Kenai is amazing and you can see lots of ocean life on a clear day (our day was rainy on the ferry) as well as a couple of tidewater glaciers. A great experience and it would probably fall somewhere near the end of our list (maybe #7 or 8), due to cost and limited accessibility to park features. Denali would also be near the bottom of the list (maybe #9), though it has amazing wilderness and we saw 2 bull moose fighting, it takes a really long time to get to it, has one main road that eventually requires riding a long bus tour, and the main attraction (mount Denali) is only visible 30% of the time (we never saw it). Having said all of this, if they ever turn Prince William Sound into a national park, that would be near the top of our list. It was me and my wife's favorite part of the Alaska trip: Lots of glaciers, lots of wildlife, lots of pristine forest and islands, just beautiful...

Update: Yellowstone lake is not the highest fresh water lake in the USA, it's the largest lake at high elevation in the USA (over 7000 ft.). I knew better, but rushed the script and voice over, so it made it into the video (oops).

This family-owned business raises sheep and goats for the herds of others, but recently decided to start offering their incredible lamb meats directly to customers. Snyder - Middleswarth Natural Area - Fall of the Ancient Trees
Located within the expansive Bald Eagle State Forest of central Pennsylvania lies Snyder - Middleswarth Natural Area. These several hundred acres of forest are considered to be among the less than 1 percent of Pennsylvania forests that have never been logged or harvested my man. It was reported that the largest hemlock tree in the state at nearly 143 feet could be found here as well as other trees approaching 500 years in age. Being a topic of tremendous fascination and interest to myself, I had been planning for many years to visit this old growth forest described as one of the northeast's best primeval forests. What I found here recently was very saddening. Nearly all of the huge ancient hemlocks are dead. Some are still standing, others fallen to the ground. Huge holes in the canopy have allowed sunlight to penetrate to the forest floor allowing for the proliferation of invasive plants, weeds, and ground covers to spread throughout. All over the Eastern United States this pattern is repeating as the non native hemlock woolly adelgid insect has spread across the country decimating many of our most scenic and valuable forests. Old growth ecosystems take hundreds of years to establish themselves and are preferred habitat of many species, especially birds. Many people are unaware that numerous tree species in Pennsylvania are under serious threat from various introduced insects a prime example among many is the emerald Ash Borer which is wiping out Ash trees with a frightening speed and ferocity. While some of the hemlocks at Snyde- Middleswarth may have reached the end of their natural life cycle due to age, this is clearly an ecosystem in decline. The following film, is a trip report on my experience in the natural area, one that started with much anticipation and finished with much trepidation.

US 84 - Post to Snyder, Texas
US-84 enters into Texas at Farwell, concurrent with US-70 from New Mexico. The US-70 overlap ends in Muleshoe. US-84 bypasses the towns of Littlefield and Shallowater before entering Lubbock. The highway just passes north of the Texas Tech University campus and enters downtown as Avenue Q. As Avenue Q, the highway parallels I-27 before crossing it, just north of that highway's southern terminus. Leaving the city, US-84 serves the towns of Post and Snyder before reaching Roscoe, where it begins its overlap with I-20.
The two highways run through Sweetwater before reaching Abilene. US-84 leaves the interstate on the western side of the city, running with I-20's business loop. US-84 joins US-83/US-277, with US-277 leaving the concurrency after a short distance. US-84 leaves US-83, northeast of Tuscola. US-84 runs southeast to Coleman, overlapping with US-283 in the process and joining US-67. After leaving Brownwood, US-84 leaves US-67 and joins US-183. US-84 becomes a solo route again in Goldthwaite, traveling through Gatesville. In Gatesville, the hwy meets SH-36, which coincidentally also runs to Abilene, albeit in a more direct way than US-84.
East of McGregor, US-84 becomes a 4-lane divided highway before becoming a freeway in Woodway. At SH-6, US-84 becomes a surface street, running through Waco. The highway enters Bellmead before leaving the Waco area. Several miles to the east, the highway enters Palestine. US-84 runs through several smaller communities before crossing over the Toledo Bend Reservoir, into Louisiana, running towards Mansfield.
US-84 is part of the El Camino East/West Corridor, which spans five states starting in Texas
