Beijing secret travel top list and hidden gem Chengde
You’re planning a trip to Beijing and don’t want to waste your time? Here are my top picks for the city in terms of
- cultural hot spots
- places in the city
- food you must try
If you’re staying little longer and want having a trip around Beijing I highly recommend to go to The Great Wall in the north of Beijing (I recommend Jinshanling) and even go further to the City of Chengde. It is a hidden gem without the tourist crowds and you’ll find some great places.
Here is the list of places in the video:
Beijing
- Hutong walk from the Orchid Hotel (The Toast restaurant - great brunch place) to Lama Temple.
- Lama Temple
- Wudaoying Hutong Street the opposite of Lama temple with plenty of small shops and cafe. Feels still real authentic and not too much renovated
- Eat - Beijing roasted duck. You can choose one of the fancy restaurants as in my video to eat with style or go to Liqun Roasted Duck in the Hutong to have it more fatty and down to earth.
- Ming Tombs are an option if you’re anyway driving longer distance to summer palace
- For sure you want to see the classics as Summer Palace to see the lake and temple. You can easy spend 3 hours if you want to go around the lake
- Forbidden City is a must but crowded always don’t forget your passport and remember “Monday closed”
- Temple of heaven (see my separate video)
- Eat - to jump into Chinese cuisine I highly recommend Black sesame kitchen at north east corner of the forbidden city. They serve about 10courses and have a show kitchen to cook it in front of you. Coco the waitress will explain the food... be curious and ask a lot. It’s adjusted to international customers “no bones in the chicken”
Great Wall
- Approx 1.5hours north of Beijing you’ll get to the Great Wall.
- There are many areas to get on the wall. I recommend Jinshanling. It is a good pick in terms of divers towers, good condition to walk and not too crowded.
- You can choose a variety of distances due to different exits down to the main entrance. I recommend take the shuttle bus at the entrance and the gondola to the wall. Safe your energy for the hike at the wall. Lots of stairs will require it.
Chengde
- Approx 1hour drive from Jinshanling
- The copy of the Potala Palace of Lhasa is called Putuo Zongcheng Temple and will give you a feeling that you’re in Lhasa. Amazing sight
- The copy of the summer palace of Beijing is called mountain resort and is pretty big as well. It has a nice lake, some historic houses and a pagoda. Nice wondering around.
- Last but not least lots of Temple in the surroundings of Chengde which I recommend you to visit the Puning Temple. It was almost empty of tourists and the huge Buddha statue with 1000arms was impressive.

Shijiazhuang is located 280 km from Beijing on the edge of the Great Chinese Plain. The Taichangshan Mountains rise to the west of the city and the Huto River (滹沱河 hūtuó hé) flows to the north. From west to east, the topography gradually changes from moderately high mountains to gentle hills and plains.
Summers in Shijiazhuang are hot and humid; winters are cold, windy, and very dry. Spring comes with sandstorms bearing down from the Mongolian steppes; it warms rather quickly, but rains are rare. Autumn is similar to spring in terms of heat and precipitation.
Average temperature in January: -2.3 °C, average temperature in July: 26.8 °C. More than half of the annual precipitation falls in July and August.

Shijiazhuang (石家庄), the capital and largest city of Hebei Province (河北省) in China, is a significant urban center located approximately 266 kilometers southwest of Beijing. Established as a city in 1925, Shijiazhuang has evolved from a small village into a major administrative, economic, and cultural hub in northern China. The city sprawls over an area of 14,072 square kilometers and, as of the 2020 census, boasts a population of 11,235,086 residents.
Historically, Shijiazhuang experienced rapid development post-1949, following the establishment of the People's Republic of China, with its population and industrial capabilities expanding significantly. The city's strategic location near the Taihang Mountains and on the North China Plain has facilitated its growth as a transportation and manufacturing powerhouse, contributing to its diverse economy that includes textiles, chemicals, and electronics.
Shijiazhuang's administrative jurisdiction extends over eight districts, two county-level cities, and twelve counties. It's known for its continental, monsoon-influenced semi-arid climate, characterized by hot, humid summers and cold, dry winters. Despite its economic achievements, the city faces environmental challenges, notably air pollution, which has been a subject of concern and action in recent years.
The city's rich history, strategic importance, and ongoing development efforts make it a key player in China's socio-economic landscape, reflecting the country's broader trends of urbanization and industrialization.

CHINA VLOG 1 | Baodu Zhai Mountain | Shijiazhuang Hidden Gem
Baodu Zhai Scenic Area is located West of the city center of Shijaizhuang and is one of the many hidden gems the city has to offer.
HOW TO GET THERE
Baodu Zhai Scenic Area is 16km from Shijiazhuang City. The easiest way to get there is via Taxi or Didi (Chinese Uber). Just show your taxi driver the Chinese name for the area on your phone or if you're using didi just search Baodu Zhai Scenic Area. It will take 30-40 minutes depending on traffic and it should cost around 45RMB. You can also take the bus to the scenic area. Make sure to get onto bus 1 and head West. The bus shouldn't cost more than 3RMB.
ENTRANCE FEE
It is possible to walk to the top of the mountain but we're lazy so we took the cable car. The cable car is 40RMB one way. You can purchase the ticket to go up at the tourist information center and you can get your ticket to come down from the ticket office next to the cable car entrance at the top of the mountain. In order to enter the scenic area you have to purchase an additional ticket. Before climbing the stairs to the entrance gate be sure to purchase your ticket first. The entrance ticket should be around 65RMB, depending on the time of the year.
THINGS TO SEE
Baodu Zhai is an ancient village with a wall built around it. This wall looks very similar to the Great Wall. On top of the mountain there are also 2 caves to explore, an ancient palace and a Buddhist temple with 500 stone Buddha's inside.
