Shadforth Village, County Durham, England. (4K)

Shadforth was a farming village from around AD 600. The village is mentioned in the Boldon Book of 1183. It is perhaps the only village in England with the name 'Shadforth' meaning 'Shallow Ford’. Shadforth is unusual in that it has never had its own pit in an area where mining was a large part of the community.

All Saints Church Sherburn in Elmet - Heritage Open Day

Please join me for a look around this historic Church and let me take you up the Bell Tower. In conjunction with English Heritage the Church was holding a special Open Day.
The Piano playing is by my relative and a gentleman in the Church very kindly played the organ for me. Unfortunately there was some other noise going on in the background to start with but the organ sounded great reverberating around the Church.
Here is some info ....
Taken from a new guide, based on the pamphlet by R E England of 1931, but now fully updated by Paul Reid and Ken Stott..........
The Janus Cross ............
This beautiful and extremely rare piece of 15th century sculpture was found in the ruins of the Chapel to St Mary and All Holy Angels, which once stood in the south-east corner of the churchyard and was by all accounts a sumptuously appointed shrine. We must be grateful that the Janus Cross survived with only the loss of its base and plinth.
The Janus Cross is so called because, like the
Roman god of doorways, it has near-identical
images carved on each side, being originally
carved as a single piece. An ownership
dispute between vicar and churchwarden ( 1886)
was settled by the cross being sawn vertically
into two halves. The churchwarden took 'his'
half away to Steeton Hall, where the niche
where it hung is still clearly visible, while the
other half remained in the church. It must have been returned to the church a few years later. This half of the Cross has clearly suffered from exposure to the elements during its time at Steeton.
Both halves of the cross show Jesus crucified with the Virgin and St John, together with emblems of the Passion. Even in its present state, the Janus Cross, with its wealth of pictorial and architectural details and its all-round symmetry, is a fascinating and moving artefact.

Those of all faiths and none can enjoy this church for it's fine architectural and artistic creation. This church has been a focus for Christian worship for at least 1000 years.
People are often pleasantly surprised to find such a magnificent church at Sherburn in Elmet .
When Athelstan (c. 895-939), first King of all England, defeated the Danes at Brunanburg in 938, he gave the manors of Sherburn and Cawood to the Archbishop of York as a thank-offering. Sherburn became a seat of the archbishops of York from this time until the middle of the 14th century. This explains the ecclesiastical importance and relative wealth of the original church and the exceptional size of the present church for its period.
There is clear evidence that the Saxon church which preceded the present building was a building of exceptional significance for its time.
An unusual feature of the Norman church is that it had aisles of equal width; a Norman church planned with aisles from the outset is a rarity in Yorkshire. Not only this, but the aisles were unusually wide for a Norman church. Since then, however, the south aisle has been widened (probably in the 15th century) and is now half as wide again as the north aisle.

In the 14th or 15th centuries, the wall was raised and the present windows inserted. The apse was replaced by a square-ended extension which formed a chantry chapel.
The lower stages of the TOWER date from 1180-1200 but, as extra weight was added, it proved too much, and heavy
buttressing was necessary, both outside and inside the church. The tower opens into the nave and aisles by rounded arches, which enclose a cross vault carried on chamfered diagonal
ribs. There is a round-headed window in Norman style which opens into the ringing chamber, enabling the ringers to follow the course of the services.
The church has eight bells . Bell 1 and 2
were cast in 1897, the year of Queen
Victoria's Diamond Jubilee. No. 3 was
cast in 1878, the gift of William Day of
Eversley Garth. The remaining bells have Latin inscriptions and are dated 1750. Two at least are by E Sellar of York.
In 2003 the new Bellringers Window glass was installed in
the westernmost window of the south aisle. The
brilliant stained glass in this window, celebrating
bellringing through the ages, was commissioned and
paid for by the ringers of this church.

Scotrail Sprinter coast's over a level crossing on the WCML

Here we have a Scotrail Sprinter service from Glasgow Central to Carlisle, via the Nith Valley Line or the Southern Glasgow line as it is also known, coasting over the level crossing at Floriston, just below the border between England and Scotland.

I believe it's a class 156, but I didn't get close enough to check for sure, maybe someone can clarify in the comments for me.

This is the train slowing down as it gets closer along the WCML to Carlisle Citadel Station in Cumbria.

The class 156, coloured in the lovely Scotrail blue livery with a saltire, has an operating top speed of 75mph although I have it on good authority that they can do up to 90mph.

*Noisy Barrier, Unique UK Crossing, Class 47* Sherburn-in-Elmet Level Crossing North Yorks 12.09.20

Days of filming 1 of 1
Level Crossings 9 of 11
Trains at 1 of 1

1:20 train passes

Video filmed at 18:13

Location: Maltkiln Cottages, Sherburn in Elmet, LS25 6EW

Timetable: Sherburn-in-Elmet

This is a very unique crossing located in North Yorkshire in the village of Sherburn in Elmet. This crossing still has the old halogen lights with the white borders. This crossing used to have 4 full length GWE barriers and used to actually be a main road until the fence was installed here. This crossing now has two smaller armed barriers that still lower as if there were 4 here, the one on this side was quite noisy lowering and raising. The amber light in this side has also had its shade missing for quite a while now and the wigwags are still in there original places from when this was a full size crossing. The train that passed was quite unexpected a class 48 West Coast Railways service. With a station located on the left of where I was filming this is on the York to Hull line the longer way round anyway.

Id just like to thank you for watching this video, it means a lot that you watch these videos on my channel. if you liked this video please remember to like and subscribe for more videos of level crossings and more.

Newmillerdam Country Park Circular Walk in 4K

Newmillerdam is a village and suburb of Wakefield, in West Yorkshire, England. The name refers to the lake and country park adjacent to the village. The park is a local nature reserve.

Formerly known as Thurstonhaigh, the village is currently named from the construction of a grain mill powered by water from the dammed lake, and thus it is called the new mill on the dam. The mill still stands, although it is non-operational and privately owned. Ref: Wikipedia.

Newmillerdam is just 3.5 miles south of Wakefield city centre. Featuring a variety of different habitats as well as coniferous and broadleaf trees, it’s an ideal destination for wildlife spotters, walkers, cyclists, families and anyone looking to enjoy the scenery and serenity of this special place.

Stroll along the circular lakeside route beneath ancient woodland. This wide, flat path is very accessible, making it a great choice for wheelchair users, booster scooters and pushchairs. The lake, covering an area of 30 acres, is an important breeding site for the great crested grebe, and in spring they can be seen performing their ritualistic courtship dance. Other water birds, including the mute swan, mallard and coot, can be seen throughout the year. Bats feed here during the warmer months, with tiny pipistrelle, larger noctule and Daubenton's bats able to be seen.

It is 2.9 km around the lake and it is very enjoyable to walk. It will be very beautiful in the summer.

Spring has arrived. COVID-19 national lockdown has eased. Today is March 31st, 2021 and the weather is gorgeous. I decided to go for a walk at Newmillerdam lake and took this video on my way there.

I hope that you all enjoy my channel. Please, rest assured that I read all of your comments, therefore please, comment and leave your feedback, as it indeed helps me to understand what you like the most and what I can do better!

...and the four walks were:

1. South Milford - Sherburn-in-Elmet.

4. Althorpe - Crowle.

Total distance walked was over twelve miles.

BARKSTON ASH: Selby Parish #32 of 74

This village dates back to at least 1090, when it was spelled Barcestone. Now part of Selby district, the village previously gave its name to a former wapentake. The Ash part of the name comes from a large ash tree said to be at the approximate centre of the ancient county of Yorkshire, where meetings for the wapentake would be held.

Undoubtedly a very pretty village, there are three 17th to 19th century stone Grade II listed building houses near the junction of Main Street and Church Street. These are Laurel Farm, Barkston House, and Turpin Hall Farm. It’s early founders are likely to have been Scandinavian in origin.

As a village with a history that spans more than one millennium, it lived through both the Wars of the Roses, featuring the Battle of Towton, fought on 29th March 1461, and the English Civil War in the 1640s. The village seems to have escaped without too much change as it moved into the 19th and 20th centuries.

What is now the A162 London Road was a turnpike constructed in 1769: the Main Street and the major part of the village goes East from the junction with this, and that’s where you can find the ash tree, but it’s not the original. A section of the original tree was kept and is still available to see.

Legend has it that anyone who spits at the tree will be struck by lightning a year and a day later, so if you come here, be careful! This is BARKSTON ASH.

Lincolnshires Best Biking Roads? Part 1

Is the B1190 the best road in Lincolnshire for bikers? Super twisty in places with mostly good tarmac and fast sweeping open curves. It's quiet too, especially compared to other roads, not only in Lincolnshire but also neighbouring counties. It's definitely one of my very favourite roads.
Then there is the beauty of the tree lined canopy covered narrow back lanes where you just have to dawdle, as you take in the views across the verdant wolds.
Often thought of as just pancake flat, Lincolnshire is often overlooked as a beauty spot county, evident in the distinct lack of visitors, especially to the wolds.
This is just as I like it, more open roads for me. ;-)

RBLR1000 2016

1000 miles in 24 hrs.
Raising money for the Royal British Legion and the Poppy Appeal - we joined dozens of other bikers and rode our BMW R1200RT over 1000 miles round the north of England and Scotland in less than 24 hours.

This is my 3rd RBLR1000, this time with my son Olly on pillion. We decided to stop for some pictures on the way round, which we had planned before we left. Unfortunately the weather was pretty miserable, so we actually missed a few out as it just wasn't worth getting the camera out.

A fabulous event, which starts and ends at Squires Cafe Bar in Sherburn in Elmet, near Leeds, and is organised by the Royal British Legion and Iron Butt UK. Find out more at rblr.co.uk & ironbutt.co.uk
A huge thank you to the organisers and volunteers who do all the hard work, while we go off for a jolly (long) ride.
