Lake of the Pines Campground Tour. The one with no campers in The Flambeau River State Forest
Looking for Camping in Wisconsin's North Woods. Don't know what to expect from the different public campgrounds. Well, you have come to the right place. In the series from the summer of 2023 I am working to remedy any questions about the different public campgrounds in both the Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest, as well as the Northern Highlands American Legion State Forest and Flambeau River State Forest
Between the two areas of Wisconsin's north woods I have visited 32+ Campgrounds. Some with as few as 6 sites and others with over 100.
I will provide you with a walking tour showing and describing each and every campsite I can without risking the privacy of children within them. I will also attempt to show what amenities each campground provides as the time of filming.
In the National forest the sites are spit between first come first serve and reservable sites via recreation.gov. Even the reservable sites can be nabbed for a few nights if the reservation sign does say it has an upcoming reservation. You would just need to move sites before the reservation date.
In the Wisconsin State Forest the reservations can be made on wisconsin.goingtocamp.com
All sites are reservable up to 11 months in advance. However, you can also make same day reservations through the site or by calling the number provided on the information sign at each campground. Except for a few overly loved campground in the state like Devil's Lake, Koller and a few others and on some particular dates like July 4th, You can usually find last min sites through out the system especially if you are only staying one or two nights. And same day reservations do not charge the reservation fee.
For example, I recently looked for a night at a campground with my wife on a Tuesday. I looked same day. Devils Lake was completely sold out, but by going up the road 10 miles to the other side of the Wisconsin Dells I found 1/2 the sites at Rocky Arbor empty and available. I did the same thing last year with a trip up the Lake Michigan coast. I tried last min at Koller with no luck, but had a great night stargazing at Point Beach State Forest.
The point is, be flexible, Plan ahead if you really want that perfect spot, but don't tell me All the State Park Campgrounds are always full. This series will show just how many waterfront sites could be nabbed last second throughout all of these campgrounds in Wisconsin's north woods for very little money.
In Antigo: A Small Town Escape
In this Discover Wisconsin short, join us in Antigo, Wisconsin where host Eric Paulsen is going to show you how to make the most out of your small town experience! Whether you are looking for that small town escape or just wanting to get the best of a travel layover, we’ve got you covered! Here are our top 5 ways to enjoy a small town!
1) Get the local twist on classic institutions. Every town has that diner or dive that everyone knows and loves, and each one has its own unique flare. In Antigo, #dixielunch is known for their amazing Kolaches, and Eric loved the bacon! So get out and visit as many diners as you can because, as we all know, variety is the spice of life!
2) Put it all into context by checking out a museum or art gallery. Getting more perspective on the local history and culture can enrich your experience and give you a deeper understanding of the people and places around you. The brand new Antigo Welcome Center is home to the Langlade County Historical Society Museum, where you can get up and into a retired train engine!
3) Support small businesses. From Farmers Markets to Mom and Pop Shops, you can score exclusive hand-made and home grown products that can’t be found anywhere else. If you’re an early bird, you just might find yourself in a fun conversation with the vendors at the #Antigofarmersmarket!
4) Seek out special events and activities by going to the town’s tourism website or social media handles. The #Amsoil Off-Road Race was such a blast and a great way to meet new people!
5) Cherish the little things. Nature walks, bike rides, or meditation in the park. Whatever you choose to do with your downtime, it is an opportunity to connect to yourself or your loved ones. So check out the amazing #springbrooktrail boardwalk - We promise this is the closest you can get to nature while inside city limits!

Winding Down the Wolf
With over 200 miles of twists and turns, the Wolf River is one of the longest in Wisconsin. The communities of Langlade County, the Menominee Nation, Shawano and Fremont are all found along the river, but each has its own unique activities perfect for adventurers and vacationers alike. Grab a paddle and experience a heart-pounding rafting trip or enjoy a peaceful horseback ride through the Nicolet National Forest in Langlade County. Learn about the importance of the Wolf River’s sturgeon population to the Menominee people at the annual sturgeon feast and pow wow. Shawano is a great place for all kinds of outdoor activities both on and off the water, including a bike tour that take you past the area’s colorful barn quilts.
