Day Trip to Bellville 🏰 (FULL EPISODE) S10 E1
This town between Houston and Austin may seem small and unexceptional, but it holds some of our oldest stories. This is the land where Texas began! And more than just that, it's a place filled with passionate folks who have BIG talents.
While you’re in town, be sure you stop by this giant bust statue to say “Howdy” to the Father of Texas!
To learn the story of how Texas began, you’ll have to go a little ways outside of town to San Felipe, where Austin established his “Old 300” colony. If you’re wondering why you’ve never heard of this very important town, it’s because the settlers were forced to abandon the town, burning it to the ground to escape Santa Ana’s pursuits. This museum does an incredible job of telling this story.
The same man who owns Newman’s Bakery has created this dream kingdom where you can feel like royalty for an afternoon. He opens up his towering home for tours, and it’s a great place to bring out your inner kid. Ring the tower bells, have a sword fight or fling cannon balls from a giant trebuchet (aka catapult) into the lake!
This blacksmith shop is an incredible testament to owner Cowboy’s passion for crafting knives — and playing with fire! Each knife lining the shelves of his shop has been hand-crafted over a flame and the detailed designs were carved in by hand.
However you slice it, this family-owned market serves up some GOOD meat and it’s a carnivore’s paradise. In addition to 28 varieties of hand-stuffed, house-made sausages, they also have a huge selection of jerkies, briskets, bacon and more. Stop in at the cafe for a baked potato piled high with handmade pecan-smoked Chipotle Sausage, and after lunch, head to the meat counter to purchase even more meat.
Since you’re in the land where Texas began, it’s only fitting that you have Texas’s favorite treat as a snack. Aside from ruling an epic kingdom, Newman also bakes a mean kolache.
The Hills is the most old-fashioned joint in town, and since 1952, it’s been the place to park your ride and grab a classic burger and shake. Not much has changed since the sock-hop days, and in this black-and-white diner that’s a great thing! Don’t skip out on the onion rings — they’re enormous!

4 Small Towns, Short Drive from Houston. Houston-Sealy-Bellville-Fayetteville-La Grange (250 miles)
Lately I am developed an interest in small towns. There are so many fascinating small towns full of interesting history, beautiful architecture, and plenty of unique things that are more than worth traveling for. While driving between these small towns, you will see the peaceful fields with cows, sheep, goats, horses. When visiting small towns, one of the first places to go is Main Street. There you will often find a town square. There you will find most of historical buildings of small town
About Sealy
-Downtown Sealy, is at the intersection of I-10 and Highway 36 (just 48 miles west of Houston) in South central Austin County, was formed as a railroad town in 1879.
-Sealy's claim to fame comes from the world-famous Sealy mattress. Although no Sealy mattresses were ever manufactured here, in 1885, Danial Haynes perfected the technique and equipment patents in Sealy, which he later sold in 1889 to a group of investors who went on to make the Sealy mattress a household name.
-Sealy's historic downtown area boasts antique and gift shops, quaint cafes and museums, some housed in historic buildings. Many historic period homes abound in and around town.
-Sealy boasts at least two legendary eateries : Tony's Family Restaurant, serving locals and visitors since 1936, and Hinze's BBQ, voted one of the 10 best in the state
About Bellville
-Bellville is known as the Belle of the Bluebonnet Country because of its amazing wildflower display, every spring.
-One of the most impressive area attractions is Newman's Castle, open for personal tours into the past. Visit Newman's Castle website and get ready to step back in time.
About Fayetteville
-Fayetteville was the site of the organization of the first Czech band in Texas, organized in 1892 and known as the Baca Family Band.
- Fayetteville Texas is a small town located on Interstate 10 and the Souther Pacific railroad. With a population of about 1,300 this beautiful town has over 345 historic structures and celebrates hospitality and history for all ages with fun events, amazing things to do and see.
-Fayetteville is known as the cradle of Czech immigration to Texas
About La Grange
-La Grange is a city in Fayette County, Texas, United States, near the Colorado River. La Grange is in the center of the Texas-German belt.
-visit a tomb for heroes of the Republic of Texas, explore one of the oldest breweries in the state, and listen to European-style polka while savoring delicious Czech food. These experiences partially represent what this charming town has to offer Texas travelers.
-From historic sites and spectacular architecture to fascinating museums and unique shops and restaurants, La Grange has it all.
-This friendly town, which sits on the bank of the Colorado River among dense forests and undulating hills, is both lively and scenic, offering an ideal venue for a weekend getaway.
-By the end of the 1830’s, a small town had grown around the fort, and in 1837 it became the capital of Fayette County. Within the next 20 years, a wave of German and Czech immigrants to Texas settled in Fayette County.
One of these immigrants, Heinrich Kreische, would go on to build one of the oldest breweries in Texas, a site that is now part of the Monument Hill-Kreische Brewery State Historic Sites.
-Perhaps its most spectacular is the Fayette County Courthouse, an eye-catching Romanesque Revival structure with arched doorways and windows, a clock tower, and a limestone façade accented by red granite. The Old Fayette County Jail, which appears more like a Gothic-style European church than a corrections facility, and the Nathaniel W. Faison House, one of the oldest homes in La Grange, are two of the town’s other historic places to see.
Although La Grange’s historic sites are captivating places to visit, there is more to do in town. Explore Fayette County’s Czech heritage at the Texas Czech Heritage and Cultural Center. Sample high-quality meads (or honeywine) at Rohan Meadery. Savor a glass of wine at Rosemary’s Winery and Vineyard, a true Texas winery. Take in all the vibrant colors and patterns at the Texas Quilt Museum. If all of this isn’t enough for you, head back to La Grange’s courthouse square, where you’ll find one-of-a-kind antique stores and boutique shops to browse, and unique restaurants to dine at.
-a great choice for those seeking a quiet weekend getaway. Plan your next vacation here and you’ll discover why La Grange is the place where German and Czech heritage meet Texas hospitality.
