Exploring Santa Ana (El Salvador) and Salto Malacatiupan Hot Springs
In today's video, I will be traveling to the second largest city in El Salvador called, Santa Ana. Santa Ana is the capital city of the coffee-rich department of Santa Ana, in western El Salvador. The towering neo-Gothic Santa Ana Cathedral and the ornate Santa Ana National Theater are on the main square, Parque Libertad. On the square’s west side is the town hall, the neoclassical Alcaldía Municipal, with Ionic columns. The early-19th-century El Calvario Church faces nearby Parque Menéndez. Surrounded by volcanoes and mountains, it is well known for its historic central plaza and its nearby tourist attractions such as lago coatepeque, tazumal, and Salto Malacatiupan.
First, we will be traveling to Salto Malacatiupan to soak in the boiling thermal waters of the hot springs. Afterwards, we will head to Santa Ana and explore all of what the city has to offer. Join me as we head to what might be the most beautiful colonial city in El Salvador!

Santa Ana - Our Favorite City in El Salvador! (El Salvador Travel Guide 2022)
Santa Ana is El Salvador's second largest city and it's the perfect hub to experience all of the epic attractions you can find in Western El Salvador.
All within an easy day trip from Santa Ana:
The country's tallest volcano, Volcan de Santa Ana (Santa Ana Volcano). Which you can easily hike to the summit of and look down at an epic turquoise crater lake that's literally steaming. On a clear day, you can even see the Pacific Ocean from up there, and plenty of other volcanos.
Lago de Coatepeque, an epic lake in the crater of a volcano that you can swim in. Surrounded by restaurants, bars, and hotels.
Ruta de las Flores (Route of the Flowers), a road that takes you through numerous small colonial towns, famous for their flowers, art, colonial architecture, and mountain scenery. The towns are surrounded by waterfalls and gorgeous nature, and the route has several coffee farms along the way.
You can also visit ancient Maya ruins from Santa Ana and tour coffee farms. It's an epic area to do a lot. If you have time, you can also visit Guatemala and Honduras, both of which are easily accessible from this part of El Salvador.
Beyond the nearby attractions though, the city of Santa Ana itself is an absolute hidden gem in Central America and it quickly became our favorite city in El Salvador. As well as one of our favorites in all of Central America! It's a lively and active city with a ton of culture and spirit, lots of history, an amazing food scene, and a unique blend of old and new. Away from all the action, you can easily escape into one of dozens of quiet and peaceful streets and neighborhoods filled with flowers and fruit trees and dotted with cafes and pupuserias.
We love Santa Ana and in this video we take you around the city, introduce you to some of our friends, and show you some of the things you can't miss when you visit.
Have you been to El Salvador? If not, would you consider going?
We highly recommend it! When you do go, make sure you don't skip out on Santa Ana!

El Salvador frequently goes unnoticed even by overlanding travelers since it is hidden at the bottom of Central America on the route to nowhere. Which is a shame because it has just as many captivating features as its more well-known neighbors, including Mayan ruins, avenues of smoking volcanoes, tranquil Spanish colonial villages nestled in flower-filled valleys, and long, broad expanses of surf-friendly Pacific coastline. You may tour the most picturesque locations at your leisure in a few days because it is around the same size as New Jersey.
10. Tazumal.
Archaeologists believe that Tazumal was first inhabited about the year 5,000 BCE and was inhabited until the 13th century when it was abandoned. Tazumal is the most spectacular Mayan ruin in El Salvador. In the 1940s and 1950s, the architectural complex was excavated and completely rebuilt; nonetheless, many of the ruins have not been investigated to this day.
9. Playa El Tunco.
The waves on the rocky, black beaches are greatest in the early morning hours. Welcome to this unique beach town, which consists of only two streets and is particularly popular with backpackers and surfers. When the tide is low, you can go exploring in the beach caves or stroll the charming alleys.
8. Suchitoto.
This once-colonial city is located to the northeast of the capital, San Salvador, and it is well worth the trip. Although it was severely damaged during the Civil War (which lasted from 1980 through 1992), it is currently a popular mountain vacation destination and a center of culture on a national scale; its streets are constantly being filled with art and cuisine festivals.
7. Ruta de las Flores.
This route, which gets its name from the wildflowers that grow down the side of the road and which are at their peak from November to February, takes you through some of the most picturesque towns and villages in El Salvador.
Number 6. Playa El Esteron.
There is a wonderful section of shore here in El Salvador that, for whatever reason, isn't as popular as many of the other coastlines in the country. The absence of the raucous backpackers and other beachgoers that are typically found at this location has resulted in calmer waves and a more peaceful atmosphere.
5. Lake Ilopango.
A freshwater lake today occupies the spot in central El Salvador that was once occupied by an active volcano around 1,500 years ago. At an elevation of 1,450 feet and surrounded by steep cliffs, it is a popular destination for people who enjoy sailing and diving. The cone was fractured by an eruption somewhere between the years CE 410 and CE 535.
4. Montecristo National Park.
This national park represents nature at its most intense, from the highest mountain to the lowest valleys. The park covers an area that spans an incredible 7,933 square miles. It has the appearance of a long-lost world, with a dense canopy of oaks and laurel trees rising up to a height of up to 100 feet, with mushrooms, lichens, and mosses growing rampantly across the forest floor.
3. Puerta del Diablo.
The history is dreary – it's full of death and sorrow – but the vistas are spectacular and inspiring now, which ensures that there will always be a steady stream of tourists. The Devil's Door is a rock formation in El Salvador that is made up of two very tall rocks that make a window out over the surrounding verdant environment.
2. Santa Ana.
It is approximately 65 kilometers from the capital city of San Salvador to Santa Ana, which is the second largest city in the country. The coffee trade is responsible for the city's enormous prosperity, which can be seen in the picturesque streets and buildings that dot the landscape. It has a majestic air about it, and because of the city's overall attractiveness, there is a thriving cultural scene.
1. Coatepeque Caldera.
Lago de Coatepeque is one of the major lakes in the country and fills a volcanic caldera that was formed tens of thousands of years ago. This makes it significantly older than Ilopango. It is a miraculous sight to behold as you approach the crater from the highway that runs along the ridge of the crater. Surrounded by steep slopes, the clear blue water drops 394 feet.

El Salvador - Santa Ana, El Imposible, El Zonte & Vulcano | Travel video | GoPro 10 & DJI Mini 2
I have to say, that I was a little bit scary about my trip to El Salvador. Because you know, there are many negative information on the internet about El Salvador. Especially about the killing.
I wanted to make my trip by my own self, because I always need to have my own view. And I can say now, that El Salvador was so so so much interesting. The people was so nice, the cities was real and it is completly safe place for tourist. Or maybe not completely, but it was similar like on many places in America, or on my different trips or holidays.
I was able to visit during my trip Santa Ana Volcano, Lake Coatepeque, Concepción de Ataco, Campana San Andrés, Waterfall Salto De Malacatiupan, Tazumal Archaeological Site, Cascadas de Tamanique, Atiquizaya, Joya de Cerén, El Imposible National Park, El Zonte and El Tunco.
V El Salvadoru jsem navštivil tato místa Santa Ana Volcano, Lake Coatepeque, Concepción de Ataco, Campana San Andrés, Waterfall Salto De Malacatiupan, Tazumal Archaeological Site, Cascadas de Tamanique, Atiquizaya, Joya de Cerén, El Imposible National Park, El Zonte a El Tunco.

Welcome to our video on the top things to do in Santa Ana, El Salvador. Known for its rich history, colonial architecture, and proximity to natural wonders, Santa Ana is one of the country’s most vibrant cities. Here are some of the best places to visit and activities to enjoy in Santa Ana.
Start with a visit to the Santa Ana Cathedral (Catedral de Nuestra Señora de Santa Ana), a stunning Gothic-style church that is one of El Salvador’s architectural treasures. Built in the early 20th century, the cathedral features beautiful stained-glass windows, towering spires, and intricate carvings. It’s located in the central plaza, making it a great starting point for exploring the city.
Next, head over to the Teatro de Santa Ana, an impressive neoclassical theater located near the cathedral. Built in the early 1900s, the theater is a cultural icon and hosts various performances, including plays, concerts, and cultural events. You can take a guided tour of the interior, which features elegant décor and historical significance.
For a deeper dive into local history, visit the Museum of Western Art (Museo Regional de Occidente), which showcases the history and culture of the region. The museum houses a collection of pre-Columbian artifacts, colonial-era relics, and exhibits on Santa Ana’s important role in the coffee trade.
Outdoor enthusiasts should take a day trip to Cerro Verde National Park, located just outside the city. The park offers scenic hiking trails and stunning views of three nearby volcanoes: Izalco, Cerro Verde, and Santa Ana Volcano. For the adventurous, hiking to the summit of Santa Ana Volcano is a must-do.
Another natural wonder worth visiting is Lake Coatepeque, a beautiful crater lake located about 20 minutes from Santa Ana. You can enjoy water activities like kayaking and swimming, or simply relax at one of the lakeside restaurants while taking in the views of the shimmering blue water.
Finally, explore Casa Blanca and Tazumal, two important archaeological sites located near Santa Ana. These ancient Mayan ruins offer a fascinating glimpse into El Salvador’s pre-Columbian past. Tazumal features the largest pyramid in the country, and both sites are great for history buffs and those interested in ancient civilizations.

48 Hours in Santa Ana || El Salvador Travel Vlog
In this video we explore the colonial town of Santa Ana, El Salvador checking out the colorful streets, local markets, and colonial churches. Then we take a chicken bus out to the nearby Mayan ruins of Tazumel.
Not far from El Salvadors capital is the cute town of Santa Ana. It’s a common basecamp for some epic volcano hikes, but the town itself has a colorful, antique charm with multicolored storefronts and elegant cathedrals. The town has a very local feel, as we stumbled upon a few church services, a food fundraiser, and got invited to dance with some old ladies at the bar. We even got invited to check out the rooftop of the Cathedral to get sweeping views of the city below. A quick day trip from Santa Ana takes you to El Salvadors largest heritage site, Tazumel, home to ancient mayan ruins. Had a great time exploring this small town as we prepared for our volcano hike, and here’s how it went…

BACKPACKING TO SANTA ANA, EL SALVADOR (we found this festival...)🌽🇸🇻
In this video, we take you around the beautiful city of Santa Ana, El Salvador. This beautiful city is El Salvador's second biggest and has some of the best preserved architecture in the country. There are a number of attractions inside and out of the city including markets, events, and beautiful natural experiences. Today, we walk through the history of Santa Ana and important landmarks such as the National Theatre, the Santa Ana Cathedral, and the beautiful parque libertad. We are also here at the perfect time for a very interesting festival: The Festival de Maiz! This festival is used to pray and get ready for the next corn harvest season. We were able to witness this community celebration with music, dancing, corn foods, and the crowning of this year's corn queen! 😊🌽
