Canal Lachine - Atwater Market - St-Henri - Lachine Marina - Montréal - Québec - Canada
The Lachine Canal (canal de Lachine in French) is a canal passing through the southwestern part of the Island of Montreal, Quebec, Canada, running 14.5 kilometres (9 miles) from the Old Port of Montreal to Lake Saint-Louis, through the boroughs of Lachine, Lasalle and Sud-Ouest.
Before the canal construction there was a lake, Lac St. Pierre or Lac à la Loutre (Montréal) or Petit Lac St. Pierre. The lake and its rivers can be seen on the maps of Montreal of the years 1700, 1744[3] and on the map titled The isles of Montreal. As they have been surveyed by the French engineers (1761). The lake is now filled in and located near the Turcot Interchange on Autoroute 20.
The canal gets its name from the French word for China (la Chine). The European explorers sought to find a route from New France to the Western Sea, and from there to China[5] and hence auspiciously the region where the canal was built was named Lachine.
Due to the continuous disposal of industrial waste, the canal contains harmful substances,[6] though the water quality is said to be good.

From Germany to Montreal: Best Food Spots & Must-Do Activities | Ultimate Canada Travel Vlog 3
Welcome back to my channel! This time, I’m offering you travel tips, best food spots, and must-do activities, but in Canada, instead of Germany :) This trip was very exciting for me because not only did I get to bring my German boyfriend along to spend quality time in Canada with part of my family, but I also got the chance to explore more of the East Coast of Canada. If you’ve been following me for some time, you probably know I’m from the West Coast, but this still feels a bit like going home. Anyway, are you ready to join me on this trip? Here we go!
First, get ready with me to travel!
I am a light packer as usual, but when you go back home and want to buy your favorite things to bring back to Germany, it can be quite annoying to have limited luggage space. No point crying about it, though, so here we go to the airport where we can explore the new café.
First stop is Brussels! Even though it was just for a quick layover, you know you can’t pass by without eating a waffle :) . Have you tried Waffles in Brussels? Tell me in the comments.
Welcome to Montreal, Canada! :)
Like any good North American Expat in Germany, the first thing you do when you arrive in North America is get a REAL bagel!!
Then you will take a walk with me to meet my brother and admire some of the impressive local architecture...and just watch what happens after, ahah. OMG. Unpredictable weather. Despite it, you can save 3 Brasseurs as a tip for a bar the locals here go to.
So now for day one of Montreal tips:
We started our day with a coffee at Café Union Mile-Ex as it was recommended to us. From there, it’s an easy stroll through Little Italy. As you walk around, you will feel this mix of North American/New York with a European vibe—it’s actually a pretty cool and fun combination of these two different worlds.
Next stop is Schwartz’s! And no, we are not back in Germany :) This is a little Jewish deli we normally visit in Montreal. You can judge by the huge line how nice this Smoked Meat Sandwich experience is going to be! Also, say Hi to my dad!! You may already know him from my Instagram content. German boyfriend approved the food 9/10— would be a 10 if there was mustard ahah but we are not in Germany.
Next, we are on to a little vintage shopping spree at Mile End.
And we make a stop a this vintage store called Lau. B is a must-visit! Just take a look at how cool it is.
Next...more bagels...because why not? Enjoying this as much as possible before returning to Germany. And of course, time for another coffee at Café Olimpico for a famous Iced Coffee or Iced Frappe...aaand you’re back in Europe with all the TVs showing football or soccer. Once again, the German boyfriend approves...the coffee too. :)
Next up is Rotisserie Panama for dinner if you are interested in having delicious Greek food.
Day two in Montreal for some Canadian Classic:
First stop is Café Saint-Henri because you can’t start your day without coffee. Café Saint-Henri offers a great selection as well as some very tasty pastries.
Back to the Mile End district for some strolling around, enjoying the beautiful streets and local architecture, as well as street art. Also, Let`s have some Poutine! Yes, the real, original, classic, true poutine! You’ve probably seen me talk about this before. Poutine is a Canadian classic; it’s delicious and not that complicated to make. However, I keep seeing fake versions of it in Germany and other parts of Europe, which is really disappointing. I mean, don’t get me wrong, I don’t go around Europe or Germany expecting to find Canadian food. But if you are going to put it on the menu, at least make sure it’s legit! Sorry for the rant...Germany :)
Perfect dessert: We got a mango popsicle with stuff on it...I mean Tajin, just before we moved on to meet my family in Lachine. Super nice green area by the water, perfect for a quiet walk or just to enjoy the beautiful landscape and some of my family history.
Day Three in Montreal - stroll at St. Anne-de-Bellevue
Very cute canals perfect for a stroll, very family-friendly. The main street is a Canadian classic and offers some things to do and shop.
Day four exploring Montreal Hipster Neighborhood:
We started at Tsak-Tsak. If you are an expat in Germany, I know what you’re thinking—it’s a place for you to hurry! (Joking in German, you can say Zack Zack to someone if you want them to hurry). Then to a beautiful square for ice cream. Watch the video to get a little history lesson from my dad too (not included in the trip if you visit Montreal, by the way), and find out how much he used to pay in rent. You will not believe it! Then we went on to Montreal famous hipster neighborhood, Plateau District, to get some dinner at Diablos BBQ. Just see for yourself how amazing that food is. Followed by a visit to Dispensaire Microbrasserie for a lovely outdoor beer tasting.
The Montreal tips are not over! Make sure to subscribe to get the part 2!
