(EN) Guadiana River with a course of 829 Km is the fourth-longest in the Iberian Peninsula. The source of the river is in Ojos del Guadiana (Ciudad Real) in Castilla-La Mancha (Spain). In its Portuguese course in Alentejo was built the Alqueva Dam. It is the largest artificial lake in Western Europe with 250 square kilometres. Guadiana River flows into the Atlantic Ocean between Vila Real de Santo António (Portugal) and Ayamonte (Spain). On 30 December 1773, King José I ordered his Minister Marquis of Pombal the creation of a new town on the right bank of Guadiana River. It was necessary to defend the region from spanish attacks, to better control duties charged on cross-border activities. Marquis of Pombal is the founder of this beautiful city, Vila Real de Santo António, built from March 1774 to May 1776. He built the city using architectural and construction techniques employed in Lisbon Centre, based on prefabricated pieces and using the latest technologies in only two years, a great speed for the time.

(PT) O Rio Guadiana com um percurso de 829 Km é o quarto mais longo da Península Ibérica. A nascente do rio está em Ojos del Guadiana (Ciudad Real) em Castilla-La Mancha (Espanha). Em seu percurso português no Alentejo foi construída a Barragem do Alqueva. É o maior lago artificial da Europa Ocidental com 250 Km2. O Rio Guadiana desagua no Oceano Atlântico entre Vila Real de Santo António (Portugal) e Ayamonte (Espanha). Em 30 de dezembro de 1773, o rei D. José I ordenou o seu Ministro Marquês de Pombal criar uma nova cidade na margem direita do Rio Guadiana. Era necessário para proteger a região de ataques dos espanhóis, controlar melhor as taxas alfandegárias transfronteiriças. Marquês de Pombal foi o fundador desta linda cidade, Vila Real de Santo António, construída de março de 1774 a maio de 1776. Ele usou na edificação da cidade o mesmo método que na Baixa de Lisboa, à base de peças pré-fabricadas, em apenas dois anos, uma grande rapidez na época.
