Places to see in ( Runcorn - UK )

Places to see in ( Runcorn - UK )

Runcorn is an industrial town and cargo port in Cheshire, England, located within the Borough of Halton. The town is on the southern bank of the River Mersey, where the estuary narrows to form the Runcorn Gap. Directly to the north across the River Mersey is the town of Widnes. Upstream and 8 miles (12.9 km) to the northeast is the town of Warrington, and downstream 16 miles (26 km) to the west is the city of Liverpool.

Runcorn railway station is on a branch of the West Coast Main Line and provides frequent services to the Liverpool Lime Street, Birmingham New Street, and London Euston stations. The A533 road passes through the town from the south, crossing the Runcorn Gap over the Silver Jubilee Bridge, the lowest bridge crossing of the River Mersey. The Manchester Ship Canal runs alongside the Runcorn bank of the River Mersey; the Bridgewater Canal terminates in the canal basin in the town centre, as the staircase of locks leading down to the ship canal was filled in many decades ago.

Runcorn was a small, isolated village until the Industrial Revolution. It was a health resort in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Towards the end of the 18th century, a port began to develop on the south bank of the River Mersey. During the 19th century, industries developed the manufacture of soap and alkali, quarrying, shipbuilding, engineering, and tanning. In the early 20th century, the prime industries were chemicals and tanning. The original village has grown to include what were outlying villages.

Except for chemicals, all of the old industries have disappeared and there has been diversification, in particular because of the close links to the motorway system and the development of warehousing and distribution centres. A new town was built to the east of the existing town in the 1960s and 1970s

Runcorn is situated on a spur projecting into the River Mersey, which flows to the north and then to the west of the town. On the north bank of the river is another spur forming the West Bank area of Widnes; together these form Runcorn Gap, a narrowing of the River Mersey. Runcorn Gap is crossed by the Runcorn Railway Bridge, which carries the Liverpool branch of the West Coast Main Line, and the Silver Jubilee Bridge, which carries the A533. To the south of the town is the River Weaver and the Weston Canal. Both open into the ship canal. To the southeast of the town run the M56 motorway, the Chester–Manchester railway line, and the main branch of the West Coast Main Line. The town has a system of expressways, roads designed to divert traffic away from the residential areas.

The major landmark in the town is Halton Castle on the top of Halton Hill near the geographical centre of the town. Only ruins of the castle exist, but there are widespread views from the top of the hill. The castle grounds are open at advertised times. Incorporated in the castle walls is the Castle Hotel building, which used to include a courthouse on the first floor. Another landmark is Norton water tower, built of Runcorn sandstone, 112 feet (34 m) high, which holds 672,000 imperial gallons (3 million litres) of water and supplies it to Liverpool.

An important historical site and the major visitor centre in the town is Norton Priory, now a museum. The site contains the remains of a priory with adjacent gardens, formerly of a country house. Nearby are a walled garden, including a national collection of tree quinces, and an ice house.

Much of the architecture of the town is undistinguished, but there are listed buildings of some importance. The listed churches are All Saints Parish Church and Holy Trinity Church in the centre of the older part of the town, St Mary's in Halton village, St John's in Weston, and Christ Church in Weston Point. All Saints' Church, a Grade II* listed building, dates from 1849 and was built by Anthony Salvin in red sandstone. The oldest existing houses are the Seneschal's House in Halton village (1598), Weston Old Hall (1607), Brookfield Farmhouse (1691) and Halton Old Hall (1693). Other outstanding houses include Runcorn Town Hall (formerly Halton Grange), Camden House and Cottage in High Street and Bridgewater House near the ship canal.

10 best waterfront sights of Liverpool & the Mersey Estuary

Having written a travel guide to the Mersey Estuary, I sometimes get asked for suggestions for places to visit around the estuary that are more off the beaten track and I thought I’d give ten ideas in this video.

This includes places in Liverpool, Wirral, Runcorn, Widnes and Warrington including some that I found surprising when researching the book.

If you are interested to find out more, you can find the blog post I mention in the video here:

The book is called 'The Mersey Estuary: A Travel Guide' and is available from all good bookstores and as an ebook. It is also available directly from the publisher:

The music is 'Wildlife Explorer' by Mark Torch/Epidemic Sound.

Widnes to Runcorn Walk. Wigg Island & Mersey Estuary. Really different with great views & wildlife.

I’m always looking for something different and this fits the bill. Around Widnes and Spike Island, the West Bank offers wonderful views and really interesting architecture. Over the Silver Jubilee bridge is never disappointing and Runcorn town centre has plenty of eating places. Wigg Island backs onto some stunning views and fantastic wildlife so what more can I ask for? Albeit small the Marsh Harrier is after 8 minutes. But stunning. All the very best Paul. Jan 2023

10 Most Hated Towns in England

What are the most hated towns in England? No matter how good a country is, every part of it can’t be loved equally. In fact, some parts of it are bound to be hated. Even the most fanatic lover of a country will love some parts of it less than others. I have heard some people complaining about some towns in England, the home of the Queen that some people are dying to live and work in. That prompts research into the 10 most hated towns in England.
This ranking is based mainly on the comments and complaints of residents of England and visitors to those towns. But it’s not limited to that since some complaints can be completely baseless. We dig deeper in researching these 10 most hated towns in England.
10. Slough
Let’s begin with Slough, a town in Berkshire, within the historic county of Buckinghamshire. This town is 20 miles west of central London and 19 miles northeast of Reading. You will find the town in the Thames Valley and within the London metropolis around the area at the intersection of the M4.
In spite of its location, Slough according to those visitors, is a town whose streets are littered with empty takeaway and full of packets or empty beer cans. This assertion hasn’t been contradicted by even just one resident. The quality of food in the town’s restaurants appears, kind of, made for losers who’re just out to eat as much unhealthy food as they can get away with.
9. Scunthorpe
It’s not desirable to find Scunthorpe among the most hated towns in England. Unfortunately, we can’t afford to take it out of our list because the facts obviously place it there. This industrial town in the unitary authority of North Lincolnshire should normally be the pride of Lincolnshire as its main administrative center. But the town with an estimated population of 82,334 in 2016 had many things going against it.
Residents of the UK’s largest steel processing center, also known as the Industrial Garden Town, are frustrated by a lack of the liveliness and diversity in the town only known for work. However, the loudest grouse that lists Scunthorpe alongside the most hated towns in England is the indiscriminate censorship and blocking of websites for spurious reasons.

It draws me in this place ever since I went back over 10 years ago when the Stone Roses had reformed. The places we visited all have a story and also incredible views and wildlife. Everyone local we met wanted to chat and were absolutely a pleasure to listen too. A real pride is something I’ve noticed in this area. It was great to bring someone along who had never experienced the area and to see what they thought. Ps there are no filters on any of these shots as usual. It was just what I saw. Places to see in ( Winsford - UK )

Places to see in ( Winsford - UK )

Winsford is a town and civil parish within the unitary authority of Cheshire West and Chester and the ceremonial county of Cheshire, England. It lies on the River Weaver south of Northwich and west of Middlewich, and grew around the salt mining industry after the river was canalised in the 18th century, allowing freight to be conveyed northwards to the Port of Runcorn on the River Mersey.

Winsford is split into three neighbourhoods: Over on the western side of the River Weaver, Wharton on the eastern side, and Swanlow and Dene, as shown on the official map of Winsford in the Town Council Office in Wyvern House. Many Winsfordians consider the town to be the heart of Cheshire however other towns in Cheshire also claim this title

From the 1830s, salt became important to Winsford, partly because the salt mines under Northwich had begun to collapse and another source of salt near the River Weaver was needed. A new source was discovered in Winsford, leading to the development of a salt industry along the course of the River Weaver, where many factories were established. As a result, a new town developed within 1 mi (2 km) of the old Borough of Over which had been focused on Delamere Street.

The United Kingdom's largest rock salt (halite) mine is at Winsford. It is one of only three places where rock salt is commercially mined in the United Kingdom, the others being at Boulby Mine, North Yorkshire, and Kilroot, near Carrickfergus, Northern Ireland.
Rock salt was laid down in this part of North West England 220 million years ago, during the Triassic geological period. Seawater moved inland from an open sea, creating a chain of shallow salt marshes across what is today the Cheshire basin. As the marshes evaporated, deep deposits of rock salt were formed.

One of the most popular local stories is that St Chad's Church was built in Over Square, but the devil was so angry at the people's use of it that he decided to fly off with it. The monks at Vale Royal Abbey were said to have seen him and rung the abbey bells so that it was dropped at its current location. The Winsford Flashes are the town's most notable geographical feature. Parts of the Knights Grange pub, Grange Lane, which was once a farmhouse and belonged to Vale Royal Abbey, were built in the 17th century.

Winsford railway station, on the Liverpool to Birmingham main line, is one mile (1.5 km) east of the centre of the town, in Wharton. The town at one time had two other railway stations: Winsford and Over, on a branch from the Mid-Cheshire Line near Cuddington, and Over and Wharton, on a branch from the Liverpool to Birmingham line.

Runcorn Walk: Town Centre【4K】

Located in the county of Cheshire, and around 12 miles southeast of Liverpool, is the town of Runcorn.

The history of Runcorn stretches back to 915 AD, the year in which it was founded by Ethelfleda, ruler of the kingdom of Mercia. It was first recorded as 'Rumcofan', meaning 'a wide cove or bay'. The settlement was built to protect the northern frontier of Mercia against the Vikings.

From around 1071 construction began on Halton Castle in the village of Halton, which today forms part of Runcorn. This was later rebuilt in stone, and would go on to play a role in the English Civil War. In 1642 it was garrisoned for King Charles I before being taken by the Parliamentarians on two separate occasions. By 1650 the castle had been dismantled.

In 1761 the Bridgewater Canal opened from Worsley to Stretford in what is today known as Greater Manchester. An extension was opened in 1767 and completed in 1776 when it reached its terminus here in Runcorn. The initial purpose of the Bridgewater Canal was to transport coal from the mines of Worsley to Manchester. Its construction ushered in a period of intensive canal building across the country during the Industrial Revolution, which became known as Canal Mania.

Industry in Runcorn during the 18th and 19th centuries included shipbuilding, engineering, tanning, chemical manufacturing and sandstone quarrying. For a period, the town became a health resort, with saltwater baths opening in 1822. Heavy industry in Runcorn brought about the decline of its status as a spa town.

In 1868 the Runcorn Railway Bridge opened providing a direct link across the River Mersey. This utilised the geographically significant narrowing that occurs in the river, known as the Runcorn Gap. With the opening of the bridge, a direct route to Widnes was opened up. The following year, in 1869, the railway arrived in Runcorn. Today this is situated on the Liverpool branch of the West Coast Main Line which runs from London Euston to Glasgow Central and Edinburgh Waverley.

In 1894 the Manchester Ship Canal opened, giving Manchester a direct route via ferry to the Irish Sea. Around Runcorn, the canal runs adjacent to the River Mersey as can be seen towards the end of the walk.

In 1905 the Widnes-Runcorn Transporter Bridge opened. This provided a direct link via traffic between the two towns. This was Britain's first transporter bridge, and the largest of its type ever built in the world. In 1961 the Runcorn-Widnes Bridge opened. A day after its opening, its predecessor, the transporter bridge, was demolished. In 1977 following a widening of the carriageway, it was renamed the Silver Jubilee Bridge in commemoration of Queen Elizabeth II's 25th year on the throne. It is the westernmost bridge across the River Mersey, and stands to this day as an icon of Runcorn. It provides a free crossing to pedestrians, cyclists, motorcyclists and public transport, although since 2021 a toll applies to all other vehicles.

In 1964 Runcorn was designated a New Town to help reduce overcrowding in Liverpool. Since then the population has more than doubled from under 30,000 to over 60,000 today.

The sitcom Two Pints of Lager and a Packet of Crisps is set in Runcorn, where its writer Susan Nickson was born and raised. Many of the outdoor scenes were shot on location here.

In this video, I'm going to be talking about the top 5 most miserable towns in the United Kingdom.

Hey, my name is Ruth Mary and today I'm going to be talking about something that's been on my mind for a while now - the top 5 most miserable towns in the United Kingdom. Now, before we get started, I just want to say that this is all based on my own opinion and research so take it with a grain of salt.

Number one is Blackpool

There's no denying that the town of Blackpool in the United Kingdom is one of the most miserable places on Earth. , which has placed Blackpool at the top of the list. The town is known for its rundown amusement parks, seedy hotels, and general atmosphere of despair. And yet, despite all this, there are still people who choose to live in Blackpool. Why? Because they can't imagine living anywhere else. Blackpool may be miserable, but it's also their home. They know every inch of the town, and they wouldn't trade it for anything in the world. So yes, while Blackpool may be one of the most miserable towns on Earth, it's also one of the most livable.

Number two is Liverpool

According to a recent study, the Most Miserable Towns is the Liverpool in the United Kingdom. The study looked at a number of factors, including job satisfaction, crime rates, and weather. And, while there are certainly some aspects of life in Liverpool that could be improved, the city has a lot to offer. For starters, Liverpool is home to one of the world's most iconic music scenes. The city has produced some of the most influential bands of all time, including the Beatles and Oasis. In addition, Liverpool is home to a number of world-class museums and galleries. And, with its rich history and culture, there's always something new to explore. So, while it may not be perfect, Liverpool is certainly worth a visit.

Number Three is Manchester

Manchester is often cited as one of the most miserable towns in the United Kingdom. And it's not hard to see why. The town is plagued by high unemployment, poverty, and crime rates. In addition, the weather is notoriously bad, and the winters are long and cold. However, there is more to Manchester than its misery. The town is also home to a vibrant music scene, world-class museums, and a variety of interesting shops and restaurants. So while it may not be the happiest place on earth, Manchester does have a lot to offer.

Number Four Sheffield

Sheffield, a town in the United Kingdom, has been voted the Most Miserable Town in a recent poll. But why is this? One possible reason is the high levels of unemployment and poverty in the town. According to statistics, over a quarter of Sheffield's population is living in poverty, and the unemployment rate is nearly double the national average. In addition, Sheffield has been hit hard by industrial decline, with many traditional manufacturing jobs disappearing in recent years. As a result, Sheffield has one of the highest rates of social mobility in the country, as people move away in search of better opportunities. So it's no surprise that Sheffield residents are feeling down in the dumps. But there are also signs of hope for the future. The city is undergoing a regeneration project, and there are plans to create new jobs and attract investment. So while Sheffield may be feeling miserable at the moment, there's reason to believe that things will start to improve in the future.

Number Five is Nottingham

The United Kingdom is home to many beautiful and historic towns and cities, but it also has its fair share of less appealing places. In fact, a recent survey named Nottingham as the most miserable town in the UK. Residents of Nottingham cited a number of reasons for their unhappiness, including high levels of crime, poor job prospects, and a lack of things to do. While Nottingham may not be everyone's cup of tea, there are still plenty of reasons to visit this fascinating city. From its medieval castle to its world-renowned university, Nottingham has something to offer everyone. So if you're looking for an interesting place to explore, don't write off Notti
