A World War II Historical Site in Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija, Philippines
The Cabanatuan American Memorial used to be the prisoner of war camp of the Japanese Imperial Army during the World War II from 1942 to 1945. More than 500 prisoners of war were successfully rescued here on January 30, 1945 by the combined effort of the American soldiers and Filipino Guerillas.
The Cabanatuan American Memorial was erected on April 12, 1982 by the survivors of the Bataan Death March and the prisoner of war camp at Cabanatuan. It is located at the site of the former Camp Pangatian. It honors those Americans and Filipinos who died during their internment.
American Battle Monuments Comission (ABMC) recognizes the significance of this memorial. It has been in charge of its operation and maintenance since 1989.
This monument is one of the two historical sites in the City of Cabanatuan, Nueva Ecija, Philippines located along Nueva Ecija-Aurora Road in Barangay Pangatian 8 Kilometers away from the city proper.

FREEDOM PARK + RELAXING MUSIC
➡️Freedom Park (Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija) designed by prominent American architect William E. Parsons who also designed government buildings in Manila, Cebu and Laguna during the American Colonial Period - in front of the Old Provincial Capitol in Barangays General Luna (Poblacion) and Padre Burgos (Poblacion), Cabanatuan City, Nueva Ecija.
➡️Cabanatuan City prides itself as the “Tricycle Capital of the Philippines” with more than 30,000 tricycles plying its thoroughfares. It is the largest city in Nueva Ecija and the center for economic activity. Its strategic location as a gateway to Cagayan Valley has spurred economic activity in the area.
➡️Apart from its business strength, Cabanatuan City was immortalized in films – the American film “The Great Raid” and the Filipino blockbuster film “Juan Luna”. Both films banked on two historical events that took place in the area during the Filipino-American War and during the liberation of the country in World War 2. Hence, Cabanatuan City has its own share in Philippine and World History.
➡️A monument in honor of Gen. Antonio Luna was also installed within the grounds of Freedom Park. This is honor to a Philippine hero who was assassinated in the city.
➡️Just right across Freedom Park is the Old Provincial Capitol of Nueva Ecija. Cabanatuan City served as the province’s capital until 1965 when the capital was moved to Palayan City. The building is still in use until today and the city has managed to preserve the structure. #CabanatuanCity #NuevaEcija #Philippines
➡️Adjacent to the Old Provincial Capitol is another building that is hard to miss because of its architectural design – The Nueva Ecija High School. It is one of the oldest secondary schools in the Philippines and its architecture is reflective to that of the pre-World War 2 designs. Great thing is that it is well-preserved.
